I've seen this site from afar several times in the past , and while I was in the area , decided to check it out for myself .

The main part of this site is actually underground , and can only ( to my knowledge ) be reached by descending a staircase which has more than 50 steps , you have been warned !!! .
As you descend the staircase ,you'll notice openings in the sides of walls that have "shrines" , once you reach the " cellar " itself , you'll notice an increase in humidity , which can become stuffy when large parties of pilgrims assemble , so bring drinking water if you intend to stay more than 10 minutes .
There is an amazing spiritual atmosphere that is felt on this site , and , out of respect to the sanctity of the place , I didn't use flash when taking pictures there .

Regardless of your own religion , If you have the knees to descend and climb the staircase into the " cellar" , I'd recommend you visit , just to feel the "vibe "

fake tomb of mary
Tomb of mary is a fake created by the israeli to bring revenue to the country
mary was assumed body and soul to heaven and the tomb is a fake creation by the israeli's to dishonour the very deep belief of the catholic church. the assumption of mary into heaven is dogma and is writ in the dogma of the cc as true. there could not be a tomb because mary was not buried. no where in the bible is mentioned her burial nor her assumption into heaven but popes have concurred and decided that mary was assumed into heaven the tomb is a fake.

A number of people visit the tomb, an I was impressed that even Muslims honour her and have a corner of their own. The church is full of brass lamps making it look too much of a bazaar fo my liking. It is closed from 12 to 14.30

This is just a small underground room just outside Jerusalem city walls (outside Lion's gate). It is interesting and doesn't take long to visit, but it is nothing special. There is no information inside about what anything is.

A symbolic place as it’s the mother of Jesus. The tomb is below ground level and there are quite a few steps down to it. Not sure if you can get to it if you can’t walk down the steps. It’s like entering a small grotto with icons around it and a place where you can light a candle. You walk into a small opening and out the other side. It is worth a visit though it doesn’t take long.

When you approach this place, you are overcome by a pleasant feeling of meeting with your native place, although you are there for the first time. There is a merchant selling roses in front of the entrance, a very nice person!!! Great place to visit!!!

We visited the Tomb of the Virgin Mary recently. You enter a courtyard then there is a long stair case down to the Tomb which is at the bottom of the staircase. You can enter the tomb and come out the other side. There is unusual lighting in the tomb which is cave-like.

We enjoyed this visit. The whole of the walking tour of Jerusalem was incredible.

Under Kedron Valley, below Gethsemane while stepping down there was an area having glittering lamp towards a narrow gate to the St Mary's Tomb.It is believed that the body was brought here first and later resurrected.Ruins of old church can be seen in the place of New Church,.under the Greek Orthodox. While stepping down can be seen glittering Cell with St Mary's Sleeping Statue.

The outside is not attractive at all! When you approach to the entrance, the long flight down drops your jaw! Quite dark inside! The lamps makes the interior doesn't look a tomb! Perhaps Virgin Mary didn't bury there, they believe she ascended to heaven! Also the Gethesmane just next door, another little church, a good quite place to pray.
