Within the "walls" of Aida Camp is Noor WEG which was established by women with disabled children. There were no resources to educate these children. in 2010 women in Aida Camp banded together to create Noor WEG as a way to empower these mothers to be be able to educate their children. Some of the mom's are the sole wage earner. Some of things they do to raise money is to offer cooking classes to learn how to prepare authentic Palestinian means, homestays and the sale of embroidery items such as purses, hand bags scarves and cookbooks. Wonderful experience!

We emailed ahead to make sure we were welcome and expected and would recommend this.
Aida camp, a short distance from all the tourism of Manger Square and the Holy Land sites, was established as a tent camp by the United Nations in 1950 and is home to almost 3,000 Palestinian refugees. There is a visitor centre that explains the history and background but we found the tour round the camp the most illuminating part of the visit. I won't pre judge your experience but the living conditions there and the dominance of the high 'separation' wall alongside will put a lot of what is happening in the West Bank in context.
Not on the official tourist top ten list but well worth the diversion. Interested visitors are welcomed.

We were staying next door at the Walled Off Hotel, and our tour guide, Michael Jackaman, took us to the camp. Our tour was conducted by a resident of the camp, who provided an in-depth look and explanation about the history of the camp through the present day. There is also a shop where the residents of the camp sell items they have crafted out of various things such as tear gas containers (the camp has the reputation of being the most tear gassed site in Palestine). It is a very moving experience to visit, and if you find yourself in Bethlehem, you should.

Visited on a private tour with Bethlehem Tour by Dani T. Fascinating and sobering visit. The artwork was often poignant and told of a long and difficult history. An unforgettable place that needs more world attention.

I found it interesting to tour this "camp" which I put in parenthesis because it is all buildings not tents which seems reasonable since these refugees have lived here since the 1940's. There is a lot of symbolism with keys as they took the keys to their homes when they left because they expected to return after the conflict.

Heartbreaking to see people living in such crowded conditions. Inspiring to see the good work in the arts and other areas that is being offered the children, so that they have a chance in life.

Nothing can prepare you for a visit to Palestine. Aida Camp is a must see. Go with a guide for a real understanding about what has happened and what is happening. See the gift shop with metal jewelry made with tear gas canisters made in the US. Visit the coffee shop, suoer friendly and great service.
