Modern Art

This place had a really good show on when I was there. It was eye opening to see the world through turkish eyes. Pattern, of course, played a large role in many of the pieces.

Whether you enjoy the art is a matter of taste, but Istanbul Modern is worth a visit if you're in the area. The museum is a modern art hall with videos, installations, and frames on par with any top tier modern art museum. Some installations were magnificent, others bland. It's got a great view right on the Bosphorus near Dolmabahce... More

As modern art galleries go, this is a good one, with a small but mixed collection of modern and contemporary work. If you are more of a traditional art lover, then this probably isn’t for you. One thing to say is that their cafe, though expensive (fresh fruit juices were about 20TL!), is on a waterside terrace, offering unbeatable views... More

We decided to visit Istanbul Modern on our last day when we found we had a couple of hours spare. The museum itself is not overly large and the art inside is interesting and well-presented. Coming from London and being used to the likes of Tate, I found the 15TL admission fee steep for the size of the collection. In... More

This museum is not big, but it is very interesting and keeps up your attention span. The building and location are cool, the exhibits are designed well and I saw types of art I had never seen in my life. Well worth the trip and doesn't waste your entire day. Great for kids.

Easy to find, welll organised, attractive and thought-provoking. Nice cafe/restaurant with terrace over-looking the Bosphorus. Groups of tiny school children, super well behaved were being treated to educational experiences whilst we were there. We wandered from here, crossed the busy street went uphill toward Galata Tower, stopping en route to buy the most delicious breads, baked for us straight from... More

Interesting and at times challenging art which makes you think. Beautiful exibits that cover the full range of media. Plus, a great view of the city. Use a tram or a cab from Sultanahmet.

Going to a modern art museum is a really good way to get a feel for a city - we loved Istanbul Modern so much that we went back for another visit. Took our 14 year and 11 year old children and they really loved it too. There's a great cafe with a deck that looks out over the harbour... More

Nice situated on the shore of Bosperus. Interesting display of development in Turkish painting. Especially modern Turkish artists are great.

Staying in Karakoy

Neighbourhood Profile
Karakoy
Sitting pretty with an age-old air about it, Karakoy is situated on the European side of the Bosphorus at the mouth of the Golden Horn. Perhaps the city’s most historically significant area, it’s currently one of the most happening parts of town as well. Here street vendors and alfresco fish restaurants line the banks of the Horn where the views of major attractions across the water rival Karakoy’s own key attractions, such as the iconic 14th century Galata Tower and the Museum of Modern Art. A major hub for local and international waterborne traffic, Istanbul’s commercial and maritime heritage remains as relevant and evident as ever in Karakoy. Commuter ferries mingle with luxury cruise liners at its busy port, ensuring a continuously cosmopolitan flow of people..
