It is an octagonal fountain that resembles a gazebo. Its green dome covered with golden mosaics stands out. It was built in 1900 by Emperor William II and served as a gift to seal the relationship between Germany and the Ottoman Empire. It is located very close to the Blue Mosque.

What a nice, beautiful and interesting city. We particularly visited the old center of the city. The Hagia Sphia, the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome, the Galaya Bridge and Tower, etc.
The distances can easily be covered on foot.
The people are friendly, especially if you speak a few Turkish words with them.
There are many restaurants, from very affordable to very expensive.
Admission to the sights is also quite expensive, but you get something in return.
All in all, a great first introduction to Istanbul, we will definitely go back again (and then a little longer).

A little known wonder of Istanbul, the German fountain is located in Sultanahmet Square, right at the heart of the historical peninsula. My wife and I took a tram to the site to view the amazing sights there. The square itself is incredibly beautiful and a joy to visit with its multiple attractions.

Centrally located in Sultanahmet Square, in the area formerly occupied by the Hippodrome, to celebrate the historic alliance between German and Ottoman Empires.

Made in Germany it was shipped to Istanbul, where it was assembled in its current location in 1901. Restored in 2013.

Its design recalls that of a “şadırvan” (fountain inside or near a mosque): eight columns in green porphyry, which support a copper-plated dome, embellished with graceful decorative elements and plant motifs.

The lower side of the dome is decorated with golden mosaics, with geometric patterns.

The fountain constitutes a concrete example of how art can play, in certain circumstances, even a political meaning.

The German Fountain (Alman Cesmesi), is situated at the northern end of the Hippodrome in Sultan Ahmet Square.

It is a symbol of the close relationship between the Ottoman Empire and Germany and was inaugurated in 1901.

It is only one of the many interesting historic sites within this area.

If you're in the Hippodrome to visit Hagia Sophia, or the Blue Mosque, be sure and stop at the German Fountain. It's a nice place to stop and rest, look at the beautiful ceiling mosaics and wash your hands and feet at one of the faucets that adorn each side of the gazebo like structure. This building was a gift to the Sultan from Kaiser Wilhelm, and you'll be glad he did!

At the far end of the Hippodrome was the German Fountain, built around 1900 to commemorate the Kaiser’s visit. Although not old it did fit in well with the surroundings and was certainly photogenic.
