We are an Art Gallery and organise Traditional Turkish, Ottoman marbling - Ebru workshops in our Art Gallery in Sultanahmet. Lessons are 2 hours with our local professional teachers from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in Istanbul.Turkish Paper marbling is a method of aqueous surface design, which can produce patterns similar to marble or other stone, hence the name. You can also draw flower figures which is traditional in Ottoman Art. The things you can capable of painting with Ebru is unlimited. The patterns are the result of color floated on either plain water or a viscous solution known as size, and then carefully transferred to a sheet of paper (or other surfaces such as fabric). This decorative material has been used to cover a variety of surfaces for several centuries. It is often employed as a writing surface for calligraphy, and especially book covers and endpapers in bookbinding and stationery. Part of its appeal is that each print is a unique monoprint.Need a break from the hustle and bustle of tourist life in Istanbul? Come take an art class with us.

I went to this class not knowing what to expect as I have never considered myself artistic. But, on this holiday I wanted to experience new things that I wouldn't normally do. Though I think this is the only time that I would be doing marbling (again not an artistic person), I loved the team over there. They were so... More

My daughter and I had a fabulous experience during our two days of private marbling classes with Ali and Betul. They are both real masters of many crafts and excellent instructors. The beautiful artwork that filled their studio was inspiring. We have long admired Turkish crafts and were thrilled to get such great instruction in marbling. Ali and Betul were... More

We planned a 2 hour class in the morning, but unfortunately due to traveling and jet lag we missed our appointment. We were able to get in touch with the studio that afternoon and they were very accommodating and willing to reschedule. They were very timely and prompt with emails. The class itself was very fun and interesting. They provided... More

today my daughter and I had a private paper marbling class with Ali. We had a wonderful time. He immediatly sensed my daughters abilities and allowed her more experimentation. I have very little art talent and was quite surprised by how nice things turned out. Ali's language skills are very good. He said he can speak many other languages besides... More

I just spent the most enjoyable day with Ali' learning the beautiful art of Ebru marbeling. Ali is an wonderful teacher, patient and very skilled. He explained the history and taught me marbeling techniques, starting with the very basics and building to more intricate patterns. We enjoyed great conversation, coffee and I created several beautiful papers to take home.I am... More

I booked a session of ebru arts as a present for my family. We were hosted with lots of smiles, turkish tea and a very good location from where the sun went through the windows, with a view on the sea. Such a warm and cozy atmophere! The price is definitley worth the experience, the teacher was so patient with... More

We liked these art lessons so much, we came back for a second day. There were three of us - myself and two sons. Two of us did the marbling while the other did the calligraphy. Ali and his wife were so wonderful - kind, patient and fun. We loved the marbling so much, we bought a kit from them... More

What a lovely way to engage with Turkish culture! I took this class after already having spent a few days in Istanbul, and it was such a relaxing thing to do - a really enjoyable way to spend a few hours, experiencing first hand the very encient skills and techniques of ebru marbling. I really recommend the experience, our tutors... More

I booked my whole family on a combined marbling and tile painting course of 2 -3 hours each (they can be booked separately). Ali and his wife are both wonderful hosts and Ali is an incredibly engaging, charismatic and entertaining teacher. Despite us having no experience; within a very short time we were producing wonderful marbled pictures with tulips, daisies... More

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
