This is one of my favorite structures of Istanbul. Sultan Ahmet III built this fountain or Çeşmesi in 1782. It was built as a charity for the people visiting the Hagia Sofia Mosque, as they could drink water and perform ablution before entering the mosque. There used to be a Byzantine era water feature here called Perayton. This fountain is... More

It is right outside the palace and is worth spending a few minutes at for photos. Not too exciting though.

It is very close to the Palace, and if you rush to the Topkai, most probably you pass by. But it is worth to stop and look on the tiles and ornaments on the walls of the fountain. Very good photo opportunity.

You can find this unique fountain at the gate of the Topkapi Palace. The design is a mixture of European and Asian style. The wall of the fountain is covered with tiles and sculptures of Ottoman era. Very good place to take photos. Why don't you take some pictures here while you wait the opening time of the Topkapi Palace?... More

As one approaches the Imperial Gateway of Topkapi Sarayi, the Fountain of Ahmed III, stands to the right. The large Rococo fountain has four facets, shaded by a large overhanging roof, which is topped with five small domes. A tap is attached to each facet, each of which is surrounded with a richly carved façade.. Seyit Vehbi, the Ottoman poet,... More

This is a small but attractive structure located close to the Hagia Sophia and the main entrance gate to the Topkapi palace. You can't actually go inside, and the view is somewhat spoilt by cars in the vicinity, but it's still an attractive looking building and is worth a brief stop as you explore the area.

This ornate rococo-style fountain dates back to 1728 when Sultan Ahmet III commanded that it be built. The dry fountain stands in front of Topkapi's Imperial Gate and would be hard to miss by anyone passing by. The first time I saw the fountain, I found it to be worthwhile to walk around the structure to look at the architectural... More

When you intend to visit Topkapi palace at Sultanahmet square, take some time /around 15 minutes/ to stop by this marvelous fountain, located in front of the main gate of Topkapi palace. Sultan Ahmet erected it and it really represents the valuable adornment at whole square. The fountain is easy accessible by both - public transport and tourist buses -... More

The Fountain of Sultan Ahmed III is outside the Imperial Gate of the Topkapi Palace. This early 18th century fountain has a sloping roof with 5 small domes and has poetry inscribed on it. It can be seen just before you enter the Topkapi Palace. We saw it before entering and I thought I'd take a picture when I came... More

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
