Neighbourhood: Beyoglu
Istanbul’s most famous street, pedestrianized Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue), throbs day and night and offers a fantastic array of architectural sights, shops, treats, and throngs upon teeming throngs of people. At the avenue’s northeastern end is expansive Taksim Square, thought by many to be the very heart of the city, with many of Turkey’s most renowned restaurants and some of Europe’s most happening nightlife in close proximity. In striking contrast, Beyoglu’s less trafficked areas – such as the affluent Cihangir and the antiques district of Cukurcuma – exude Old World charm and provide contemplative calm and splendid diversion via an assortment of cozy cafes, attractive boutiques, and quiet lanes.

    I wouldn't put it as a priority
This square is very important historically speaking and as a connection node for different transportation. Different buses (including the service that goes to and from the airport) pass through here, as well as metro and trams. I don't think it's beautiful, but reaching it is a logical consequence of having been walking from one end of the Istiklal pedestrian street to the other. I would say that you do not specifically go to visit it, that it happens naturally because you have been traveling by public transport or walking the pedestrian path that I just mentioned.

    Beautiful..
It is a historical and touristic place to visit when you come to Istanbul. Although it has undergone a concrete-based arrangement and renovation in recent years, it is far from its old green appearance nowadays. A square where tourists take photos. Since there is a metro, it is very easy to reach. It is crowded at almost every hour of the day. Bagel sellers, corn sellers and street vendors selling chestnuts, as well as people selling feed and taking photos with pigeons, fill a part of the square.

Great to have more time here !!!
Taksim Square is a major tourist and leisure district, It is surrounded with full of antique/souvenir shops, restaurants, international shopping & food chains, movie theaters, bars, cafes , roof top eateries with Bosphorus . Lots of visitors/tourists, some sit down by the road side café , sip some Turkish coffee , taste all kinds of Turkish snacks , relax to watch the world goes by. While some takes picture with the Square Public Monument, many are seen browsing around shops. Occasionally we get to see the tram passing by. Be great to have more time here !!!

    Shopping
Be very careful shopping or buying food. Don't shop or buy anything from and place or person that doesn't show prices. Specially small ice cream places. However, it is a very nice street to visit.

    Too crowded but impressive…
Taksim Square and Beyoğlu are places that make you feel the heartbeat of Istanbul. Every time I visit, I am enchanted by the lively atmosphere of Taksim and the historical texture of Beyoğlu. While wandering around Taksim Square, I sense that it is a meeting point of different cultures and people. Exploring the narrow streets of Beyoğlu, I see a wonderful balance between the past and the present. The night carries a special charm in this area; with music, laughter, and the dance of lights, I feel like I've stepped into a fairytale land. Taksim and Beyoğlu are places that, for me, reflect the soul and energy of Istanbul in the best possible way.

    GREAT SHOPPING AREA
During our weeks stay in Istanbul, we walked the "Taksim Mile" twice. On both occasions, we were not disappointed as we saw new places for the second time. Also some great restaurants which will be reviewed separately. Just about every fashion brand has an outlet in this area. Both times it was pretty busy with tourists and locals. Well with a visit.

    Busy and fun
Similar to Oxford st in London. Very crowded with all the expensive shops but some great budget places to eat too such as the kebab places. Must try the tram, the sweetcorn and a kebab wrap and deserts from Haji Mustafa.

    A bustling square
I visited in August 2023. (Sorry for the late review) It's a busy square in the center of Istanbul, very beautiful and has a tram. From here, a shopping street leads to a kebab shop, a Turkish ice cream shop and many souvenir shops. The scenery is also good, so please visit.

A great public transport and walking loop
We took the Sultanahmet tram to the end of the line (Kabataş) and from there you can go directly below ground and catch the funicular up to Taksim Square. Weirdest funicular anywhere as it is entirely underground as it grinds up the hill from the coast to the peak. And yes, you can use your red tram pass! On arriving at the top, we set off down the pedestrian mall (Istiklal (Independence) ... Interesting architecture but super busy and I have no idea why so many people are absolutely clueless about bumping into others! So felt a bit claustrophobic but the people watching was fun. We walked all the way down and then hooked a left which took us down a very steep street and back to the water and back on to the tram! A great leg stretch and casual way to spend an afternoon. Oh and had a super yummy lunch at a very traditional Hatay restaurant, Antakya Mutfağı, that was just off Istiklal. If you've been to Hong Kong, think about the hardly labelled famiy restaurant on the 4th floor with no elevator. yes, it was worth it. All 4 flights.

    October Square
October seems to be a great time to visit Istanbul. I think it's the first time street food is remembered this way in the evening. The square was pleasant for several family friends to share their time. Of course, walking the street and Shopping was good.

Taksim square is a massive open space that pays particular significance to the anniversary of the Turkish Republic. Centre stage is a wonderful monument depicting the event along with a huge mosque in the background. It stands at the crossroads of many pedestrian shopping walkways and also has it's own metro station there.

Taksim Square is in the new part of Istanbul and is a lively, bustling area of the city. We made it a stop on the Big Bus Tour and found plenty of modern shops, restaurants and bazzar's . There is a metro stop and plenty of buses go there from all over the city so getting there isn't a problem. It's well with a visit and the amount of tourists walking around with shopping bags indicates to me that the prices are reasonable.

Went here post-New Year's eve celebrations (we didn't want to deal with the crowds that evening)
It's a wide open space on the Golden Horn side of Istanbul. It was easy to access on the tram. The statue is of the modern leaders of (then) secular Turkey. It's fun to see and then walk down Tarlabasi Blvd.
We got here by riding the Funicular (very vertical tram) from the waterfront, which was also part of the appeal.

The square itself is not worth visiting, full of homeless people, beggars and con men. The areas around it are fine during the day, some get worse in the evening. I would avoid the park it is quite basic and not much worth looking at.

Beware the scammers, the same scam artist has been working the steps around the Intercontinental Hotel since we arrived. He acts like a gentle older man who offers a shoe shine, you decline and he act humble, next thing he drops his brush as he shuffles off. As all kind people would, they point this out to him and thanks you.

This starts the con, let me clean your shoes as thanks for your kindness, you are a good man, a gentleman, then please if you could, can you offer some money. When he asks for money, his whole attitude and body language changes, become aggressive and demanding, the area makes you vulnerable as there are many people who you feel could be linked with him.

Hello yesterday morning at about 09:30 we took the Havabus bus from Taksim towards Gokcen airport and on the tickets we were ripped off. I specify that to travel from Taksim Square to Gokcen airport it takes 210 Turkish lira about 6€ per person
I also want to point out that to travel to Istanbul you have to buy a card with a cost of about € 8
Yesterday Morning 30/09/2024 at about 09:15 at the time of departure from Taksim Square with direction airport we asked the staff who were where all the buses of (HAVABUS) were if the card that we had (The red one) was also good for traveling to Gokcen airport. The same told us YES.
Once we got on the “Havabus” bus the ticket clerk tells us that the cards were not good and if we wanted to leave we had to give him the 2 cards that we had purchased at the beginning of our trip with the credit that was on it of 250 Turkish lira and still paying a difference of another 320 Turkish lira
Bottom line: the HAVABUS ticket agent took:
N. 2 cards paid at the beginning of our trip about 16€
The credit that was on it about 7€ and in addition another 320 Turkish lira which is equivalent to about 8€
To travel with Havabus we spent 32 € instead of 420 Turkish lira equal to 12 €
A robbery, staff havabus cheaters and villains
It was a robbery
Negative experience

Extraordinary city, alive 24 hours a day, you can feel safety everywhere, the people are very hospitable and helpful. We visited the most important attractions and none of them disappointed us. The grand bazaar is very characteristic for the multitude of products it offers and, obviously, you have to negotiate to the point of exasperation!🤣🤣 We stayed for six days which are just enough to see the most important things.
I can say that it is among the most beautiful cities in Europe that I have seen!

Never seen so many people in one place
Shops, bars, restaurants, markets, street acts
Completely buzzing
If you enjoy hussle and bussle then it's a must.. The food and drinks on offer is amazing and really cheap, istiklal Street never seems to end with a lot of beautiful historical buildings and a beautiful Chapel along the way
Go further afield and find even better
I also recommend talibasi for authentic Istanbul.. An inner city neighbourhood

Many first timers to Istanbul choose Taksim to stay and shop. But these days it is not a great place to stay. First of all most of the properties around the area are on very steep slopes and getting in and out is a chore for many. Second there are lots of other areas where you can go shopping and there is nothing special on the streets around Taksim that can't be found at any shopping mall around the city. In fact Taksim has become a ripoff area for the first timer to Turkey. So instead stay on the Asian side and enjoy the vibrant cafe society and the real Turkish hospitality at places like Kadikoy. The location is perfect. Transportation wise it is a hub as you got ferries, buses and metro and metrobus. It's a convenient location to travel around and way cheaper. We have been to Istanbul many times and always stayed around Taksim Beyoglu area and took a ferry to the Asian side. But on this trip we decided to listen to our long time resident friend and stay in Kadikoy. The best advice ever.

Taksim Square is a central point at the northern end of the 19-century "new" central part of Istanbul, as opposed to the ancient heart of the city to the south, across the Golden Horn.

The square anchors the northern end of Istiklal Caddesi, a major pedestrianised street through the core of this part of Istanbul, with one of the city's two historic 19-centiury tram/streetcar lines running the length to and from this square.

The square itself is very broad and open and was especially redeveloped in the early Republican era as a new focal point for the city, with the iconic monument to independence and the transformation to the republic at its heart. It has buildings from several eras and styles around it, many interesting. The square ismostly pedestrianised. The entire area is a major shopping, eating, and entertainment area offering much for anyone.

The ugliest square I've ever seen. It is not clear what is the center of the square, the tram tracks that pass through, traffic and confusion reign supreme. The only good thing is the sweaty sandwich from a kiosk on the square. Then we walked all over Istiklal Caddesi and not even the shadow of a waste bin. With what they tap tourists could improve the services offered by the city
