This enormous palace was the Imperial residence of Ottoman sultans for almost 400 years. Although much of the palace is not accessible, the daily tours of the Harem are of great interest to tourists.

Don't forget the harem

When you visit Topkapi don't forget to buy tickets for the harem. I think it's the best part of Topkapi. An audio tour is also a good idea for a lot of extra information.

Large museum in the old palace. Themed exhibitions in the different buildings, most of which I found interesting and educating. The architecture is no less than stunning. Expect a lot of hustle and bustle, especially in the Sacred Artifacts exhibition (strict dress code) and treasuries. Expect very long lines.

Undoubtedly a must-see at Istanbul! Very impressive palace; hugh and really splendid. Try to come early morning, as queues can be very long (especially for the jewelery division). Buy a museum pass! It's a good bargain when you want to visit more of the "top-locations" and you don't have to wait at the ticket office.

Visiting the Topkapi Palace Museum is a must if you plan to visit Istanbul. I was in awe of the palace, the grounds, the backdrop of the Bhosporous and of course the relics! A few grievances however do have to be noted; the extensive queue that's formed during peak times; considering the revenue that this site draws, one would imagine... More

We had the museum pass, so bypassed the extensive line to get in (The museum pass is well worth the cost for that reason alone, folks). We went straight to the Harem after renting our audio guide, as the staff member suggested that we should. I think the primary reason that I'm giving this a poor rating is because of... More

We're there at 4.00pm. We're queueing for 20 minutes before we got the ticket. The palace I can say it's an ok one untill you are at the end of the premises where you can see the Bosphorus river from the wall. It was one of the nicest view overlooking Bosphorus. Again, if you are traveling with baby/infant using stroller,... More

Topkapi Palace was the royal residence. It is now a museum and a major tourist attraction. Very close to our hotel we went early and bought a Museum Card. We walked uphill from the Gulhane Park entrance. But if you wait, there is a go kart which doesn't stop in between. The walk is quite steep from there. There was not much... More

One of the richest experiences in Istanbul. This is my second visit to it and it is still an exciting place to be in. I always wonder how Topkapi Palace is not the # 1 attraction in Istanbul in Trip Advisor. It is truly like no other. Must see. Top 1: THE COST: the entrance fee is 30TL and can... More

I had a bad experience there. It was too crowded. We had to wait in queues one after each other, and at the end I had this feeling that it wasn't worth it. I couldn't enjoy watching the architecture properly because of the crowd (in French: it is said "un monde fou") and I didn't care much about the objects... More

lovely museum - esp the Harem part (which has a separate entrance fee but if you buy a Musea card for 85TL it is included). Was not able to see all of it as it was really busy. Beware though that you cannot return with a Musea card so if you want multiple visits you need to think of something... More

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
