About
This lavish palace was the royal residence of the Ottoman empire for almost 400 years. Here, you can peek into the imperial life of the sultans as you wander through the grand courtyards, pavilions and ceremonial rooms that display an impressive collection of artefacts and treasures. With a separate ticket, you can also venture into the Harem—a private world decked with over 400 exquisitely decorated rooms where the sultan shared with his wives, concubines and children. To skip the snaking lines, buy a fast-track ticket or a multi-day Museum Pass, which provides access to the city’s other top sights. – Tripadvisor

Top ways to experience Topkapi Palace
The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.

One Day is never enough for visiters
It's one of the most greates palace ı have ever seen before. Visit Topkapı is the one of the best way for comprehend to Ottomans. Cabin of Sultan from Divan was really strange and for me. Also you can see sacred relics of Mohammed the Prophet. You have to recerve for a couple to Topkapı Palace!

    Worth the walking and walking
Such a key place in the history of Istanbul. Gives a great chance to learn and observe a huge variety of cultural items. One of the best views of Asia & Europe from one point.

    Tip-Top Topkapi
This is definitely one of the most important sights to see in Istanbul to understand the grandeur, wealth and history of the Ottoman Empire. The vastness of the grounds means multiple exhibits that will occupy a good portion of your day. My partner and I arrived early so the grounds were not crowded as of yet. As we entered through a side entrance, we chanced upon the ticket booth (where there was no line) to the Hagia Irene, where we bought the combination ticket to Hagia Irene, Topkapi Palace and the Harem (though you could buy whichever ticket package you wanted). Hagia Irene is spare and the central portion is closed off though you can view the apse. We started off in the kitchen and pantry side of the palace which you shouldn't miss, especially if you are found of Turkish coffee and food, which form a huge cornerstone in Turkish culture. The palace grounds were magnificent, particularly the pavilions and the library. Do not miss visiting the Harem for a more intimate look in palace life. A guide would certainly be helpful in understanding everything in context, but the descriptions of the exhibits were clear and concise. A must-see in Istanbul. Note: Get there early before the school groups and tour groups arrive. We got to Topkapi Palace by 9:30AM. By the time we left around 1PM, there were long lines at the ticket booths and counters (though there are credit card ticket kiosks) and large bottlenecks of tourists at the gates leading into each of the courtyards. Or get your ticket from the Hagia Irene ticket booth.

Istanbul's highlight - Ottoman art, history, and food!
A wonderful highlight of our visit to Turkey. There is incredible diversity, from swords to cooking to calligraphy to books to tile work to thrones to relics to the natural beauty. And, I'm forgetting 17 things. The buildings and interior design were our favs, along with the kitchens. Oh and be sure to walk to the end where you have a great view of the marmar sea, horn, and the bosphorus. If you can, get a guide as there is 600 years of history compressed into the Palace museum.

    Palace of the sultans
Not as crowded as Hagia Sophia but I think there’s more to see here. There are several main buildings which house important exhibits and a small museum of impressive weaponry not to be missed. The grounds are beautifully manicured and you can get a great view of the Bosphorus as well. Nothing that comes close to the sheer opulence in some European palaces but the architecture and design is different. Probably an hour and a half at least should be allocated.

    Topkapi Top Marks
I very rarely leave feedback but I had to give Topkapi top marks. Haven’t been here for many years and the forgot how lovely the food was and tasted. If you like posh kebabs then this is probably the best in Manchester City Centre. The friendly service made you feel so welcome as a solo diner. Special shout out for Eddie. Perfect service.

If the queues aren’t too long!
We had not planned to visit the palace but ‘stumbled upon it’ on our first day in Istanbul. That was on a Sunday which was maybe a mistake as there were large queues - maybe better on a weekday. Was a little disappointed that ‘locals’ seemed to be given a priority queue and it wasn’t being managed as many just jumped the queues for a ticket. It is an impressive place but didn’t see the harem as the queues were even larger and they wanted a further entrance fee for that. An hour or so is all you need.

    Excellent
Topkapi Palace lives up to the hype. It will appeal both to those with an interest in the historical period, and more casual tourists. The harem costs extra to visit, but is well worth it - this is probably the most interesting section of the whole palace. Best to visit early in the morning to avoid long lines. You can easily spend the whole day here, so plan your visit accordingly.

    Amazing Palace and its collection
Visited in January 2023. It is a nice historical palace with great architectural structure. Major attractions to me was sacred Islamic relics preserved in this palace. View of the Bosphorus from the Palace is very relaxing/peaceful. Entry ticket (except Harem) was 500 Lira for adult and 70 Lira for my 7 years old kid.

Good to visit but prioritise other sites first.
You probably need most of the day here to do it justice. We only spent half a day so were rushing through it (and to be honest, not really prepared to invest a whole day in seeing it). Visiting the ancient relics room and the Harem costs extra but I think it is worth it. There is an audio guide which is ok for some parts and a bit light on for other parts. I probably wouldn't priorities a visit hear unless you have 4-5 days in Instanbul. There are other sights I'd see first. Stil the architecture and history are very interesting and we are glad we saw it.

Very interesting place, must visit harem for full experience, it's worth the extra cost. Don't miss two treasuries (relics and gems). The place is large with extensive grounds, lots of different buildings and exhibitions. Audio guide is free and it's decent, provides some basic information.
The worst thing is the visiting experience. There was no food save for two coffee stands that had some candy and non-appetizing sandwiches (the second one was tucked away, so it's very hard to find). Only two small bathrooms, which are quite dirty and also not easy to spot.

Topkapi Palace is bigger than you imagine, I spent an entire morning wandering around and I didn't visit all the museums so leave plenty of time to see it all, go early to beat the crowds and the groups of school kids who seem to visit all the palaces. I've seen some iffy reviews of Topkapi Palace but I don't know why, I was blown away, there's so much of it, stunning views across the Bosphorus and of Istanbul and the decoration is stunning and the collections quite something, some rooms get busy and crowded but in most rooms I and others were taking photos despite there being staff and a ban on photography, the security never once stopped anyone using a phone or camera in any of the buildings or rooms and there's a hell of a lot deserving a photo.
So, it's a must see in Istanbul, all of the palaces are, go early and prepare to spend a good 3 hours or more exploring the palace and its grounds and the harem.

Ridiculously expensive. Harem is the only worthy part of the visit and you need to pay extra. Furthermore, they pretend everyday the machine is broken and they force you to pay cash.

Topkapi is the most famous palace of Istanbul which is quiet logic given the beauty of the palace, the harem and the gardens. You should forecast at least 3 hours of time to enjoy it. In some areas you will have to queue but the waiting times are manageable.

We stayed 5 minutes walk from here, but still had to que for 45minutes to enter,so book on line,we paid 950 TL each, then we were in endless que all day,6 hours viewing all the rooms, tresures, jewels,Mesmerising, superb, history you would not belive,we were totally amazed.
The crowds here are endless, ques, packed rooms,so go early when it opens, its not so busy but still packed, various stages of rooms and do not forget the gardens and views of theBospherous.
you can exit into the park ,if you finish in the gardens, with a leasurely stroll back.
Take plenty of water, and a face mask as crowds are at very close quarters inside the rooms.

The palace is large, with many separate pavilions and collections, and is a bit short on wow factor. Treasury, clock collection, library, several halls here or there, a couple of those pavilions are interesting enough, and it requires over 2 hours to see the place more or less thoroughly; probably half a day if you listen to everything on the audio-guide. The Harem is included on a higher-price ticket, but not on the basic one. Technically, there is not much in the Harem that is not seen elsewhere. St-Irene is also included, but it is entirely empty with not much to see. In the morning, the ticket line is short, but it quickly grows to unbearable.

Visiting the Topkapi Palace was a long hold ambition. I was not disappointed. The grounds and palace buildings alone would make it special. Add in the treasury, the historic costumes and the relics from the birth of Islam and you have a remarkable landmark. Even in November it was busy, but it’s a large site so absorbs the people quite well. The exception is the Imperial Treasury, which had a long queue and was packed with elbows out visitors. However, the displays are well laid out and very well lit. The quality and workmanship is incredible, with numerous diamonds, emeralds and rubies adorning beautiful items. There are also many examples of ornate arms and armour and richly decorated kaftans and other clothing.
Deeper into the complex is the audience chamber with precious relics sacred to Islam. It’s a very special place, even to an agnostic like myself. The entrance fee was 750 or 950 lira, the latter including access to the harem which was unfortunately closed when I visited. This is a lot of money in Turkey, but I think it’s well spent.
Toilets and food outlets are quite limited in the palace so you need to consider this. It’s a big site, so be prepared for a lot of walking.
