Neighbourhood: Grand Bazaar
Tourists, hawkers, and locals come together at the Grand Bazaar to comb its labyrinthine passageways in search of a bargain – be it a pair of brand name jeans, a handcrafted silk rug, or a perfectly brewed cup of tea. Outside the vast bazaar, worn, narrow streets wind their way down from its lofty perch to the southern shore of the Golden Horn, where the evocatively aromatic Spice Bazaar beckons alongside the elegant New Mosque (opened in 1665). Nearby, the famed Galata Bridge offers pedestrian access to urban delights across the river in Istanbul’s more residential and contemporary neighbourhoods, while the must-see sights of Sultanahmet are but a leisurely stroll away.

- CCT73Ann Arbor, Michigan18 contributionsFun place, dedicate a few hours if you want to do some serious shopping. So much fun and great deals! Make sure you have plenty of cash and not just cards because some places only accept cash on hand. This was the perfect place to buy gifts for people with a Turkish flare. Please be aware there are numerous fake high end shops, if you only want the logo that's fine but realize it isn't authentic. I would suggest their pottery, table covers, fun mementos and Turkish delights.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 January 2024
- Voyager023463053931 contributionAlrightThe comments were really bad and it doesn't make you want to enter the big bazaar. However, I went there and I think they understood the criticism because there were no smokers inside, it smelled of spices, and no harassment even if I stopped to look. To have a truly great experienceVisited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 5 February 2024
- 2058-KWSt. Albans, United Kingdom81 contributionsFeast for the eyes-Essential Istanbul tripAmazing place, I don’t know anything else like this. It’s a feast of colour. There are supposed to be around 4,000 shops which gives you an idea of the size. Lots of narrow streets and if you want to go back to a shop, make sure you ask for a business card otherwise you will find it hard to locate again. It’s covered, so a good venue if it’s raining. Bargains can be had if you are prepared to barter. Often no prices are showing so do prior research. I bought a bomber jacket from a really nice guy and his brother from Agni leather, gate 3 number 10 and am well pleased with it.Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 12 February 2024

- Bkat2 contributionsBazaar was fun to seeGreat for the experience. The locals will say not to spend too much money there (it's an overpriced tourist trap they say) but you might find some good souvenirs. But for the history and experience I recommend going. Note that if you need to use the bathroom in the bazaar, you will need 3 lira to go through the turnstile to get in. (Or you can be like my sister and with the help of the bathroom attendant hop the barrier. I paid 10 lira and told the attendant to keep the rest.) Nice cafes are outside of the bazaar- with no "fee" per se. I went in Feb- so not too crowded. Please hide your valuables (maybe money under your shirt)- I am told pickpockets are here.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 20 February 2024

- Hr_u_Fr_ReiselustigMunich, Germany1,795 contributionsGigantic market, bring time, get involved, enjoySo we didn't need anything and just went to the bazaar for fun. The bazaar is gigantic and they sell absolutely everything. Not just good replicas of bags, watches, etc., but also spices, tea, carpets - simply everything. The sellers talk and offer their products, but are never pushy. Everyone speaks English and often even German. As in every bazaar, haggling is a must and those who get involved often hear stories about the city, the bazaar, restaurant suggestions, everyday topics or even strokes of fate. We had fun.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 February 2024

There are mixed opinions on this bazaar, and being there many times I'd agree with all of them.
Yes, the place is highly touristy, but is also an original historic market place considered as one of the first and largest markets in the world. It's regarded as a predecessor of today's shopping malls.
Kapali dates back to the mid 15c, began being built as soon as the city was conquered. It was enlarged over the centuries to reach today's massive scale. It's a huge maze of streets, hallways and side alleys and most probably you'll get lost.
You'll find there everything - from copies of famous clothes and watch brands, rugs, furs, leather, spices, sweets,....to fine jewelry. Be prepared to bargain.
The shop owners are pushy, even sometimes crossing the limits, but do NOT observe that as harassment or be offended - it's just a part of their culture and trading customs. You'll experience that all over Turkey, at restaurants as well.
The whole area is totally safe, just use caution like anywhere else in crowded places in terms of pickpocketing.
Love it or hate it, it's an authentic place you must visit at least once.
TIP: Best exchange rates in all Turkey are here. But, NOT by the Bazaar entrances, but further inside the maze. If changing bigger quantities you can negotiate even a slightly higher rate.

Kapali Carsi or Grand Bazaar of Istanbul as it is widely known, is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world!
We arrived on a weekend, so the place was quite busy. You get to see plenty of shops selling (supposedly) all big firms accessories ie. bags, wallets, purses, perfumes, clothes, even tiaras for the wannabe royalty :)
Beware! All products are fake branded, imitations. But one has to admit, good imitations. So if you don't mind buying fake brands, maybe this is the place for you. In this case, all you should know is how to Bargain! You can make them amend the price to less than one third of what they are originally selling. My friends bargained some products starting from 300 lira, ending up buying them for just a 100. A lady next to us got her bag for 350 Turkish lira, while the starting price was 800. When they see you leaving they start shouting to sell for half the price, and later for even less.
I would recommend this place for purchasing souvenirs and of course for jewellery, since you can get jewellery in much better prices here than most other places (in the country and abroad). I got myself a couple of rings at an extremely low price.

When I initially entered the ‘Grand Bazaar’ to google maps, I was surprised at how big the actual area was. In addition, although the original enclosed Bazaar area has now been supplemented by an enormous expansion of shops and markets around its periphery, you could easily spend an entire day here with ease. The sheer variety of shops, cafes, outlets and markets is mind boggling, and there is literally a shop for every item. Want spices, sure, want designer underwear, tick, buy an original silk carpet, absolutely - your wallet will be much lighter at the end! Overall, I’d say the prices were about 50-60% less than in mainland Europe - probably due to no VAT, cheaper overheads and closer manufacturing, but we felt safe, secure and entertained in equal measure. Don’t be scared to barter, as we soon found that it was easy to achieve an average discount of 50% off the original asking price, just make it polite and be prepared to walk away. A definite must when you visit Istanbul.

Nice to visit and walk around. Mass produced wares and tat tripple the price. Not worth the energy and time to haggle. The hand painted ceramic bowls cost me 9.95 TL Asian side in Kardikoy , but were selling for 25 TL at the Grand Bazaar.
Seller’s can become hostile if you start haggling. I followed advice and divided the price offered by 3 and was told to get out of the shop. Some of the porcelain coffee sets cost more than Harrods.
Preferred the smaller shops outside and a nice cup of coffee in a cafe.

We visited the famous grand bazaar but we were so disappointed. The bazaar has lots of fake European and American brands. The prices for souvenirs were expensive. The place did not live to its high expectations and hype. We settled for a cake and tea at some local eatery. I would not recommend a visit to the Grand Bazaar, it's a waste of time unless you are into fake over priced brands.

The bazaar is an interesting place to walk around. The small central market building is very beautiful but the market itself is much bigger and sprawls out in the surrounding streets. If you are looking for something specific don’t be afraid to shop around, some places can have exorbitant pricing especially if they know you are from a “wealthy” country. Don’t be afraid to bargain

The Grand Bazaar is one of the most favorite touristic sights to see while enjoying Istanbul.
I still remember my first visit to this famous bazaar back in 1972 while I was free camping in Europe. I was impressed then and still today this special and old bazaar is very special.
The bazaar is extremely clean and all the shops remain open even during this difficult time for all shop owners. There crowds simply were not present as in the pasts and this is due totally to the current Corona Virus Pandemic!
We witnessed that the vast majority of tourist and shop owners were all wearing masks.
The majority of the shops within the marketplace were either “Turkish Delight” Sweet Shops; Spice Shops or clothing Stores. And as in the past all the owners were out in front of their shops plying to have the tourist enter their small shop.
Still I strongly suggest if in Istanbul, especially for the first time, to enjoy an hour or two walking in this amazing bazaar, you will not be disappointed.

You can not even breath or move in this labyrinth let alone shop! We went into a spice souk I kept asking how much is it? As the man was scooping in the powders, the whole in the end will weigh it in the end will weigh it. Ok 4 powders of spices £100 come on are you having a laugh!? Not even a kilo small bags we are talking about I was thinking £15-30 max max. I said no way! Am I paying that. Stand your ground. They will get angry they will say “ it’s only money” I would rather put that £100 towards a charity box than give it to you guys that have floor to celings of this powder.
The Sad thing was I can hear other tourists spending £100-300 on spices and sweets. The way they move and over fill peoples bags even though you say a small bag. It’s a crazy scam! By all means we shopped in other places other local shops, had a great time and I am NOT frugal by any means BUT £100on chicken spice salad spice, fish spice and Turkish spice I am not a fool with my hard earned money. After trying to embarrass us and making us look cheap in the shop in front of other tourists. He said we don’t need your money. Of course your not going to get it! If he told it was £25 a small bag of spice we would have stopped. Fact he REFUSED to tell us the price till he weighed all 4 at the end. Their intentions isn’t the best and than the whole can’t put it back it’s air sealed,
Absolutely everything is crazy high it makes you question are they joking!? Eg a bag they will say 800 ( assuming it’s liras) you will look at it than they will say 800 euros!? Bags are from £200-£900. They can get very angry and rude when you mention your budget. Saw a lovely key ring when I asked the price it was £85 the whole it’s real leather.
NOTHING is below £20 not the best place to get gifts. I absolutely
Over shopping but this place was terrible, they were like vultures at times and it wasn’t a nice afternoon. The best thing was leaving and having a Turkish tea away from this mad house.
locals NEVER shop there one worker there a lovely old man said “as you are tourists they will charge you phenomenal high prices. That’s why Turks stay clear and stuck to their local bazar.
Lovely little stalls in taksim for shopping x5 cheaper
Take pictures enjoy the madness but shopping no way.

Grand bazaar or else Kapalicarsi is a well known market place in Istanbul but I really don’t recommend to go for shopping or spend lot of hours there.
The only thing that worths there is that you can take a photo with the famous Turkish lamps.
Everything is overpriced and you really need to bargain to buy something. Even the smallest thing they will try to sell it you 20x times more the price that you will get it If you bargain.
And I say. Does this worth? Absolutely not! Everything is fake inside there. Even the food.
Outside this bazaar you can find better prices for sure and If you inside for exchange currency you will definitely find better rates outside too.
I went one time in my trip and definitely I didn’t want to go again. Worth a visit to see what’s going on there but that’s all.

The actual Grand Bazaar is the closed market. Prices of all products in these shops are very expensive. Fortunately, we visited another place in Istanbul before going to Grand Bazaar & encountered souvenir shops where same products were available for lesser price. So our visit to the Bazaar was limited to admiring the beauty & variety of things. There are huge number of shops outside the grand bazaar (an extension of the bazaar) & we found souvenirs for lesser prices in these shops.
We walked so much that we ended up at the Egyptian bazaar which had a line of Turkish Delight (Lokum sweet) & dry fruits stores. The prices here are the best, so do not hesitate to buy them in bulk quantities. These sweets do not require refrigeration & stay fresh for upto 6 months, hence serve as good gifts for friends & family. We bought them from Sukru Efendi store which is a 100-year old store. They have boxes of various sizes & do air-tight packing good enough for flight travel.
The bazaars are EXREMELY packed & you can easily walk 20000 steps, so would be best not to bring along kids & senior citizens if possible. The Grand Bazaar, Spice Bazaar & Egyptian Bazaar are located next to each other, you cannot demarcate where one stops & the other starts. So, keep walking & enjoy the shopping experience.
