Built between 1609-1616, this impressive mosque has six minarets. Why is it called "Blue Mosque?" There are two stories: the first, more common one is that the interior is covered in Blue İznik tiles. The second is: Many years ago, ancient sailors who sailed by the mosque on the Marmara Sea saw the blue colors of the sea reflected in the mosque.

The visit at the Blue Mosque is an unforgettable experience for me, it was so remarkable the beauty of the interior with those iznik ceramic tiles with the 50 different tulips design. It is a holy place for prayer and worship for them and it's a good gesture of hospitality to welcome visitors inside. A must visit when in Istanbul.

As with all mosques remember to go with respectful attire. Ladies no knees showing or shoulders and heads, bring a scarf. there are some available but have been used by other people. Men - long trousers and shirts. No vests. A bit of a queue to get in but it kept moving. Lovely building, the tiles on the walls are... More

I was not able to enter, it was too crowded and I was too tired :) I took some pictures outside and just wonder around inside and 3 small boys interviewed me. I think they have a homework to be done from school. The questions was surrounding how do I like Istanbul:)

I appreciate how Muslims practice their religion. Such a long and respectable history. The atmosphere was excellent with beautiful decorations. I am aware that not all mosques are so beautiful and air-conditioned, but this Blue Mosque is a must-visit.

It was pretty but very very crowded. There are other mosques like the suleman mosque (the biggest) which are equally beautiful (if not more so) and much more pleasant - no queues or smelly tourist feet. If you are a woman you need to cover your shoulders and head.

If you go to Istanbul, this will be automatic! Huge line ups but well worth it. Girls, please show some respect and dress with arms and legs covered. You will be given a shawl to cover your head and no tights either! again, you'll be given a cloth to wrap around your waist. It's all good, my wife and daughter... More

This mosque is gigantic and truly beautiful. Please note that this is an actual mosque that people use to pray in so be respectful and follow all the rules. There is a praying entrance and a visitors entrance, there is no entrance fee at all. If you are going to go inside and you are a man, you need to... More

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
