There are the most stunning mosques I have ever seen in Istanbul and the history behind the building of each one was more like an adventure story than just history. Some tragic, some romantic and some just strange. There is a lot to absorb, so be prepared. Was a good tour that is worth doing.

There is a lot of interesting places in the whole area. You should stay in a hotel nearby and take two days to see all of them. the area is big, but at the same time not so big, so everybody could walk around the area in this historic part of Istanbul. It is possible to use public transport (it... More

a lot of history. Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Turkish. everything is there. You constantly travel back and forward in time. walking from Pera (beyoglu) across Galata Bridge to old town and back is like a time travel of 1000 years.

City has maybe 20 million inhabitants so touring around can be difficult especially if you don't speak Turkish. Take a tour from your hotel. They get you all of your entrsanvce tickets, the groups are generally small and you don't wait on a single line. Guide talk is minimal but just enough to learn something and with plenty of time... This place is huge and very easy to get lost in. It is wonderful to go and look around at all the stalls. However the prices are higher inside than they are on the outside.

Staying in Sultanahmet

Neighbourhood Profile
Sultanahmet
With so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.
