Yet another amazing Byzantine monument of Istanbul poorly advertised and hard to come across unless you have done some previous research. And like many monuments ... it is not a monument! You pay 10 TL to enter (fair, as it is half of the basilica...More

Stopped by here on the way back to the hotel from a walking tour. It costs 10Tl to get in. The cistern is pretty small but if you want the place to yourself this is a good bet. Managed to take some ok photos here...More

Not particularly well signposted so not easy to find. When we did eventually find the entrance it was all locked up because it was a Sunday although any info I could find on it stated that it was open daily.

Well worth a look much smaller than the more famous Cistern but very impressive none the least. Not a great deal of information on show however and only good for a short visit.

The Binbirdirek Cistern has 224 pillars, not 1001. That designation may come from the Turkish "a thousand and one," which means multiplicity. But it is still worth a visit. Though Binbirdirek fails to match the Basilica Cistern as a tourist attraction, it offers an interesting...More

Open daily 9am - 6pm. This cistern is well worth a visit. Much smaller than the Basilica Cistern. Located in the Sultanahmet area. 10TL each entrance fee. Very dark and eerie.

This cistern is a really nice space, with nice details such as the stonemasons' marks on each column. It is quite poorly presented by its current stewards, however: it smells strongly of damp, and there are prominent signs at the entrance prohibiting photos. Given its...More

This Cistern is much more intimate and small than the Basilica one but is very interesting to see in comparison. There are not 1001 columns but the ceilings are amazing and the lighting is great. Just walk into, look at it and go back to...More
