Overview
More
The Pamir Mountain range is part of the Western Himalaya and features several peaks over 7000m. The terrain is diverse from towering peaks to high altitude desert plains and climate conditions can vary from +35C to -40C depending upon the time of year. The Pamir Highway follows paths forged long ago by the ancient Silk routes, when that precious commodity travelled from China to European and Arabian markets and traded goods returned in its stead. Legacies of those forgotten times can still be seen with cliff top fortresses and ancient caravanserais. The highway winds over 2000km from Samarkand in Uzbekistan through Dushanbe (capital of Tajikistan) and the Pamir mountains to Osh in Kyrgyzstan and then on to Bishkek (capital of Kyrgyzstan) through the Tien Shan mountain range. The peoples of Central Asia hold hospitality as a value of great importance and travellers are warmly welcomed whether the visit is planned or otherwise!

Undoubtedly one of the most breathtaking road trips I've ever undertaken, from Bishkek to Osh to Murghab, then along the Afghan border to Khorog and Dushanbe. I did it the 'easy' way - by motor vehicle, and wax not one of the many hardy cyclists...More

Very good for the adventure lovers. Great scene mid of Tajik Afghan border. Few restaurants. Toilets are not up to the mark.

We rode motorbikes across the Pamir with Silk Off Road Tours and it was simply the best ride I have ever done. Staggering scenery, lovely people and a well organised tour with great bikes, thanks Marat for the trip of a lifetime.

One of my best experiences ever. I hired a driver and went along for the ride. My driver, Turat, was exceptional - going out of his way to find me accommodation with "western" toilets and vegetarian fare. Confident and safe driver along some hair raising...More

Completely safe, in fact I was more at ease in Tajikistan than most Countries I have travelled in. The people are honest, friendly and extremely welcoming, I will be returning at the earliest opportunity.
