Perhaps lesser known, the factory of Noritake is at Matale and they also have a store there. This one not only keeps Noritake export quality stuff but they also have second grade and local market collection (that goes under different brand name). This gives a wide option to buy crockery at different price points, some very affordable! Well, that's prob why we ended up spending close to 3 hours at the store. Go for it if you are at Kandy

We spend hours at this shop and ended up loading up on their second grade at a great discount - approximately 25 to 30% of original list price in the store. However, you need to choose your pieces carefully as some blemishes might be more prominent on some pieces. For some plates, since there weren't enough grade B, we ended up buying a few grade A pieces to make up our set.
Their grade A list price is more expensive than what is available in Japan as I later found out. So savings might not be as big if the model chosen at grade B prices is sold in Japan (which sells grade A only). A bit of a disappointment for me as I travel to Japan a few times a year and I might have elected to pay a little bit extra to get grade A stuff. Not all designs are available in Japan, and overall still good savings.
Their factory closes down around Xmas time for the holidays and all stock will be shipped to their shops. So if you are opting for their grade B stuff, going around Xmas time gives you the widest selection. We were kind of late already going towards the end of December and would have had more choices if we went a week earlier.

Noritake has always been one of those heritage brands to aspire to. My grandmother owned a dinner set and the name brings back memories of a more civilised time when sitting down to family dinners at a beautifully laid table was a ritual. A friend recommended the factory store and this visit I decided to drop in. Be warned though - you have to specify the "High Level Road store in Kirullapona". Our hotel driver took us to the main showroom in the city - despite specifically asking the sales staff when we entered if it was the factory store they all nodded and said yes (not nice!). It took 10 mins looking at things and a quick Google search to figure out we were in the wrong place, so back in the car we went. The good part though was I saw first hand the different in retail prices and factory prices. The plates I wanted were 46$ a piece - at the factory store they were a mere 16$. The staff said they were design reject pieces - ie small defects in the design - but nothing that is visible to the untrained eye. I got a set of 6 dinner plates, side plates and bowls for 160$. They have quite a good selection as well as a table of clearance pieces which are even more deeply discounted. The packing is superb - very securely packed and easy to check in for your flight home. All in all it was well worth the visit.

We visited the Noritake Factory Store with the intention of buying a small souvenir of our time in Sri Lanka. We went home with a new dinner set as well as a small Noritake elephant. The dinner set was brilliantly packed. We were asked if we wanted it in one or two parcels and chose to have it in one. We put it into the general luggage on the plane, booked straight through to Perth via KL and it arrived in perfect condition.

Hello All,
Had been to Colombo on official trip. Since i had some time so checked this store. Quite beautiful collection but you will not find any dinner set (min 26 pcs) less than USD 976. Store offers max discount of 10%.
Since I found this overpriced I didn’t buy anything. Next week I visited One stop store in mumbai and was surprised to find same dinner set for Rs 30000 almost half the price. So friends don’t fall prey to brand name in Colombo.

Two floors of High Quality porcelain laid out for inspection with attentive and helpful staff.
This place is not cheap, but Noritake porcelain is top stuff.
We purchased a complete dinner set for about GBP 300.
I had grave misgivings about carrying this investment back on the plane but the staff took their time packing and did a real professional job.
Nothing was broken when we opened up at home after 2 flights.
TOP TIP: If you are not looking for a complete set, they have a bargain basement on the first floor. Also nice little porcelain souveniers ( elephants, mugs, teapots etc).

We have been getting great reviews of Noritake from our friends who have travelled to Colombo. This place was worth a visit. Beautiful pieces - perfect designs - and at an affordable price. We ended up buying a full dining set for ourselves. They packed it wonderfully and not a single piece broke when I unpacked at my house. Only problem is a bit difficult to hunt out this store. Please update its address and directions on trip advisor. Otherwise worth a visit. They also have export reject pieces here - they are a steal. We took some pieces from that too.

Just 10 days back only I visited Sri Lanka along with my wife and mom and visited Trinco Dambulla Kandy Nuveralia and so many other places. In total Sri Lanka is very nice to visit and to buy things like Gem stones and Ceramic wears in Noitake factory outlet. It was so good to view and to buy. Prices are also not bad. Need not go to Spices Garden esp. South Indians. Indian spices gardens are far better in Kerala. People of Sri Lanka are also very decent and respect Indian tourists.Roads are clean neat and smooth. No plastics bags and waste materials on the road side. They maintain in a clean manner . WELL DONE SRI LANKA

If you are looking for good deals in bone China and on basic crockery
Noritake is the only place to be.
The prices are much cheaper than the international prices
I believe they manufacture these high quality products here in Sri Lanka
Highly recommend a visit to see these quality products.

Hi Ashwani,
Would you be able to help me with entry fee for the factory? Is there one? Also, how long do you think I need to slot for the visit? Lastly, would you be able to suggest a pricing range for their dinner sets?

- There is no entry fees
- Time required for shopping atleast an hour but depends how much you want to shop because they have got huge beautiful range. There have got fresh stocks and some stuff on sales for which you need time to select and make full dinner set
- decent dinner set you can expect around USD 1000
hope this helps !
