I found Sri Ponnambalam Vanesar Kovil overwhelming. You wont see another Kovil like this in Sri Lanka. Built almost entirely out of South Indian granite, it is one of the most ancient Hindu temples and the carvings and spirituality within, are quietly alive. 6:00am Pooja.

Not a large temple and in many respects quite plain but you need to see and experience the feel of a complete stone temple of this type it is truly a peaceful respite and a marvelous piece of architecture

Carved from stone the temple looks spectacular inside, being dimly lit and only allowing shards of natural light through the walls and ceilings which seem to highlight the beauty of the carvings. It's also just a short walk further on eastwards from the Pettah district....More

The peaceful temple with cows, granite architecture,very tranquil, is a haven amidst the bustle of the city. The priests are helpful in acquainting foreigners with the culture and architecture of the temple.
