Beware the costs involved. Even though I played with a member I was charged Rs 18,000 for green fees, Rs 7000 for club hire and a non-receipted Rs 1200 for the caddie. After the round was completed the caddie demanded another Rs 1000 as payment for his services. That is US $ 149.00 for a very average golf course. That can get you into many of the top 100 courses in the world which this course is most certainly not amongst.

Absolute terrible customer service at this golf course. Beware when you book!! We booked a tee time weeks ago and were excited to play coming from Canada. The golf course canceled our tee time the day before due to a tournament.
When we re-scheduled for later the same afternoon but only for 9 holes since we didn’t have time for 18, they charged us for 18 holes even though it was their schedule change.
The staff should learn some customer service and professionalism. This is no way to run a business. Lucky they are the only golf course in Colombo.

A club in the old colonial style with a beautiful green and grand views. The restaurant served an average club menu and service was slow. Probably because it was day time and a late lunch

This is a place where we go regularly for dinner. It is the oldest Golf Clubs in Sri Lnaka & it's for members & their guests only. Serves main course food as well as a variety of finger foods. Serves alcoholic beverages and fruit juices. The menu items are rather limited but the quality of food is good . Very reasonably priced and value for money. The ambience of the Club house is lovely over looking the Golf course and is ideal to spend a relaxed evening. The travel date given is the last visited date.

I played at RGCC; the charge of USD 65 (with all other charges it is a bit more than USD100) for a game which is ridiculously high as the Course is less than average, than the courses in UK or in Australia. No proper maps or indicators therefore it would appear as rough ground when you tee off but it is marshy land. No buggies therefore you have to pay the caddies, extra tips over and above USD 100. During the course of the game without your knowledge the caddies exchange the balls you buy from the pro shop, to an older ball than what you paid for. I paid over Rs 12,500 for a game but until your money is taken, pro shop will not tell you that you have not complied with the dress code. At the time I played there was no dress code mentioned in their web site. I wore denims but at the first hole the guy at the hut tells, you that you cannot play with denim slacks. They told me that shorts are okay but not denims, therefore I went to back to Horton Place where I was staying and changed to shorts. Make sure that the shorts you wear have a zip as the guard house at the tee off will check that the shorts have a zip. The rudest people are at the 1st tee off. You are better off to play in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, as they will not rip you off. The clubs are rented at Rs 1,000.00 they are really outdated, you feel as if you are playing with a sledge hammers. You have to cross the railway line several times, but if the ball crosses the railway line it becomes out of bounds. There are guys who would bring back the ball but you have to buy back the balls off them, so beware there are many rip off points.

After visiting the RCGC my husband decided to get a membership. He is a British National. When we visited the club it was the weekend the the office was closed so we could not get details for the membership. We live overseas but come to SL 3 -4 times a year. When i called the club this morning the Male Secretary was so rude and was snapping at me for asking questions about the memership. He mentioned about having to come for a face to face interview as well. I was a bit confused as we currently hold a membership in Oman Al Mouj and never been to any interviews to get a membership!! The rude secretary was getting more agitated and was talking at the same time while I was talking very bad manners for a secretary. Olease loose the attitude and remember to be polite rather than showing off that you are the most important person. Its the members that pays your salary.

The Colombo Club was the 4th course we played on a recent trip to Sri Lanka-and that covers nearly all of them. We had our own clubs (2 half-sets) and were fortunate to play with a member which helped with costs. This was approx £40 a round as a guest, and included caddy but not tips. We tipped 1000 LKR (£6) after some advice and this went down well. Caddies had limited English but knew their job well. The greens at Colombo were amazingly quick, by far the fastest in the country. The layout is excellent. Water hazards are well placed and the Pond Boy was very happy to retrieve your ball for 40 LKR !!!. But this course was the least scenic of the 4 we played, although the railway was a real delight as the odd train passes through the course. Really enjoyable.

The Club House us under construction. Possibly it will be finished in 2018/2019. there is a little terrasse with shabby plastic chairs. The most of them where occupied by old and unfriendly club members. For the other I (female) have been told in a unfriendly way by the waiter they are "reserved". So I followed my friends (male) to the golf round for a wile (weren't able to play myself because of a broken toe). As I wasn't welcome I was walking auround and nobody showed up for this seats in 3 hours. After my friends finished their round they've been instandly offered these seats. So it seems dogs & woman are not welcome. How rude.
The equipment to hire is old and shabby but expensive. The members ignored us in an arrogant way. The staff was very unfriendly and they had been to arrogant even just to call us a pick up/ Tuk Tuk.
4 holes of the course had been under construction but they asked for the full price without any excuse. And so on ...
Was just an anoying day. We never came back (even the plan was to play again on our way back)

The Royal Colombo golf course is the third oldest golf course in the world and by looking at the facilities you can tell it need to be demolished since it's already falling down. This is by far the worst golfing experience I have ever had in my life and I played all over the world. For a weekday rate of over $30 the staff is incompetent the caddies are brain-dead the food is in edible in the lockers are barely passable. Considering the whole place is being torn apart and remodeled which will probably take another five years this is a place that needs to be avoided until the year 2020.
I played this course on a Friday Anh had the worst caddy in my life who left the bags at previous holes kept dropping my face towels dozens of times without knowledge couldn't speak a word of English I knew nothing about the game of golf. When I'm trying to hit a chip shot, he would walked past me within 2 feet of my line of fire.
I was forced to give him a tip where I would've paid him nothing. When I made a complaint to the course manager they told me when I returned on Monday for another round I could play without caddy. When I arrived they told me I was forced to play with the Catty and after 30 minutes of going round and round I said I've had enough I'm leaving.
I let them know that Iwas a travel writer so I would have to write them up as being one of the worst courses I've ever played. So if you find yourself in Colombo, do yourself a big favor skip this pours take the 4 Hour Drive to Kandy and play at a real golf course. This place needs to be imploded.

Just returned from the new years party at the RCGC well it was hopeless the place was decorated fine for the event but the food was below par and the group playing the music must have woken up from their coma after 30years ,playing 10 green bottles was not the way to go since we have already consumed 10 bottes of some sort we were seeing more than 10 on the wall in fact we were leaning against the wall . I played golf at the club two weeks ago and believe me if you did not have a million in your pocket then its advisable to play cricket cost to play at the weekend is now 15000 Rupees equal to one months wages for an average Sri Lankan the possibility of any young Sri Lankan wanting to play this great game is zero .I am off to Australia I can get a cart and play eighteen holes on some pristine courses for 1500 Rupees . Its time that this Royal club was cleaned up and the crooks given the boot including the rotten politico's that support the crooks .Please do not play at this club go to Kandy or Newra eliya they are two of the most beautiful golf courses you would want to play on and very challenging . I gather that a new golf tour operator who actually play the game will be launching a website called golfinlanka that will offer you the opportunity play all the courses in Sri Lanka.
