This is the street where local artists sell their paintings during weekends and holidays. A good place to buy local paintings .

We stopped here on our last day in Sri Lanka. It is a good thing I waited until the last day or I would have been broke for the whole trip. Sri Lanka has some talented artists. The 3 of us each bought a couple of pieces. I was very happy with the prices. Look for the owls painted on the tree.

Came to visit the park after lunch at the ‘Cricket Cafe’ so literally bumped into the artworks in this street. We had bought a very large painting at a market in Galle and bumped into Malinga the artist we had bought from. He is part of a group of artists who have a web page called ‘Aartzy’ (See photos if you are interested) showing their paintings and other pieces of art.
We spent about an hour chatting to Malinga and other artists and found it fascinating to here how they started and their styles and influences.
The prices are so good for paintings that must take hours to produce, we wish we could have bought more.

This is in front of the Nelum pokuna hall and Vihara maha devi park. There are a few stalls with quite a good selection of local paintings. They accept only cash you have to bargain.

Local art has been sold on this street for a number of decades. The best example of Sri Lankan art are rarely found here, but worth a look if passing.

I read about the Nelum Pokuna Art Street in Colombo and it intrigued me. I travel extensively and I like buying art in countries that I visit. I went to the Art Street located in central Colombo adjacent to its many beautiful parks. It was worth the effort.
Many genres of art were displayed - modern to traditional Kandy style paintings. A fun experience and I even bought a whimsical piece of art at a bargain price. Ironically, it will cost me more to frame it in the USA than what I paid for it.
My recommendation is go and buy. Cash only.
