I like trains. I always have. I ride trains. I always have and I still ride trains. So it follows and the night the day that I like railways stations. The International Railway Station here in Ulaanbaatar is well worth a visit.

UB central station, a solid grand building in the Soviet style is worth visiting not just to catch a train, but for the satisfaction of seeing the city's name in huge letters across the edifice,( in cyrillic facing the city ).
See seat61.com for the upstairs ticket office details, but unless you speak Mongolian and can read Cyrillic, it is much easier to book through mongoliatraintickets.com.
For a very small commission they'll make the reservations and deliver the tickets to your hotel.
Domestic train services are reliable, comfortable and cheap.

We bought train tickets with morning train from UB to Sainshand. It was easy to communicate and the tickets were very cheap (3,5€ each ticket). Near the train station, we found the next morning, a lot of local milk sellers.

It's pretty sad if this station is considered a tourist attraction for Ulan Bator. It's the arrival point for the Trans Siberian express, so it might be your entry point to Mongolia and it's capital, but that's the only reason to see it. An ugly, Soviet style building with a few lame cafes is all there is to see. Most of the ATM's in the small shops surrounding the main station building either don't work or will only function in Mongolian language. There is a money exchange point in the information centre.

Like every other train station, its always great for a Locomotive Fanatic. Its clean, fairly well kept and very busy as it serves the train rides to Russia and China. Like any crowded places, do take care of your valuables. Not much facilities around the platform and its worth just taking a walk from one end of the platform to the other. Do also look for the Train that is on display and nearby , there is also a "train museum " . The architecture of the building is much like other Mongolian buildings, and as it is large , its difficult to get a full frontal view of the train station. The car park is super duper pack and busy as it not only serves the passengers but also the Customs Department is also just next to it. As anywhere, enjoy the experience

The Railways Station was small but clean when I arrived from my 30 something hour train ride from Beijing. The people there were very friendly when I arrived and helped me make a phone call (there are almost no public phones in Ulaanbaatar) to my friend to come and pick me up. The Station is small, but you can change your American dollars into the local currency.

In my 8 months in Mongolia I have spent so much time at this station. While the station itself is constantly buzzing with trains coming to and from other cities both in and out of Mongolia, it's still a comfortable and pleasant place to chill while you wait.
For those unfamiliar, the ticket office is a separate building to the left of the steps/ramp that leads you to the platforms, and inside you'll find ATM's and little delgoor's to get all of your essentials before your trip. The attendants at the ticket office are always kind and polite and don't generally expect you to line up in the correct line. Just be mindful of your luggage, especially when you find yourself in line with your typical pushy Mongolians.
The waiting rooms in the building to the right of the ramp/steps is comfortable, warm in winter, and home to the cleanest public toilets I've encountered in Mongolia (with the exception of the loos in Central Tower). There's also a cafeteria where you'll find the regular hot Mongolian food, tea and coffee, and some cold drinks.
There are always police officers walking up and down the platforms, and they have helped me out when someone's tried to nick my bags, but they won't bother you otherwise.
It shouldn't cost you any more than 5000 tug for a ride to or from the train station - if someone tries to charge you more, you're being ripped off.

Be sure that your travel papers are in order and that your ticket is going to the correct destination. Take with you plenty of food, h2O and drinks. Note there are three classes of passage and you will need sleeping bunks for a long journey. Great views but no internet service!

Typical train station in this region. Keep an eye on your belongings as any traveler should. It's easy to navigate and you do not need to carry bags too far to get to the car park.

If you are an inexperienced traveller please allow a little extra time to navigate around the station and complete all tasks safely. I find the station to be safe, clean and up to standards in most ways.

is there a money exchange at the station? did you find it reasonable or untrustworthy? Are the taxis safe enough for a single female? Thank you.

Yes there is a money exchange at the station. And yes the taxi's are safe for a single female. We found the Mongolian people among the friendliest people. If you need more assistance contact Discover Mongolia and ask for the service director her nickname is Oyungal. She is fantastic.
