Description:

With over 1,200 animals including elephants, tigers, bears, gibbons,...

With over 1,200 animals including elephants, tigers, bears, gibbons, crocodiles and leopards, the wildlife rescue center is a fantastic day trip from Phnom Penh.

Several all inclusive tours are available! The Behind-the-scenes tours with Wildlife Alliance allow access to private staff areas - tiger dens, nursery with the baby animals and an opportunity to be a human jungle gym for rescued macaque monkeys, elephant enclosure for hand feeding and watching gentle rewards based training as Chhouk's prosthetic foot is changed, and a personalized tour complete with rescue stories of the animals. This is a fundraising tour and 100% of profits go directly to the rescue, rehabilitation, care and release of wildlife. Tour information is shown above (see contact website and email *please note we are currently experiencing difficulties with our online booking system, please email us to make a booking!).

Volunteer and Bear Keeper for a Day programs are available with Free the Bears, allowing behind-the-scenes access with the sun and moon bears and profits go to their care. There are also several independent tour operators, or you can visit independently, although the centre coveres 6,000 acres and signs are yet to be finalised!

Established in 1995 by the Cambodian Forestry Administration, the day to day running is now done in partnership with Wildlife Alliance, with specific animals cared for by other NGO's Free the Bears, Fauna & Flora International, Conservation International.

Most animals at the center were rescued from the illegal wildlife trade by the Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team, a patrol team created by Wildlife Alliance in coordination with the Cambodian Government. Where ever possible, rescued animals are released back into the wild, or if release is not possible they are given a home at the centre for as long as needed. Many of the species are listed as Endangered or Vulnerable and now part of important conservation breeding programs or act as ambassador animals to promote conservation.

The rescue center is about an hour drive from downtown Phnom Penh on a dusty, congested road. The zoo is a run down facility, littered with plastic. I paid extra to do the behind the scenes tour of the bears. The presenter had some interesting information and is dedicated to saving these animals. I cut my tour short because it... More

I visited Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre for a second time,on this occasion spending the day on a Bear Care Tour. Situated within the park is Free the Bears Foundation, who work to rescue Sunbears and Moonbears from the illegal trafficking, pet trade and restaurant trades and babies from ruthless poachers. would not recommend Phnom Tamao to visit if you are expecting a 'sanctuary' whilst some of the stories behind the bear, elephant and tiger rescues are moving the vast majority of Phnom Tamao reflects more of a run down zoo with seemingly small areas for most of its animals it was particularly upsetting to see plastic and general rubbish in... Hello James, Thank you for taking the time provide us with feedback of your visit to Phnom Tamao, I am sorry it was not what you were expecting from a wildlife sanctuary. All of the animals share similar stories to the bear and elephant stories you read, as they are all rescued from the illegal wildlife trades in Cambodia. Release... More

We had such an amazing day at Tamao rescue centre. Well worth while paying extra and doing the behind the scenes with the staff, as you get to learn the stories of the beautiful creatures they care for and get insight into how they operate. My children gained so much from the experience and I know they will remember that... More

This is simply the most amazing experience! Amazing tour guides, who know everything about their animals. Given a tour of the wildlife park and shown behind the scenes. There are many sad stories about the Animals, which makes it even cooler seeing first hand all the great work they are doing. All the animals are either confiscated from black markets... More

We got to hand feed elephants and baby monkeys today. And we got a behind the scenes look at other animals as well. The tour was very organized and they timed animal feedings with our visits. It was so amazing...my hand touched 2 elephants' tongues today!!!! (Yes, it is a pricy tour, but worth it!)

At first my boyfriend and I were hesitant to book this tour due to the price but it is worth every penny!!! It was also great once we were told that 100% of the proceeds go back to the organization. Our guides, Nikki, Emma, and their associate (sorry, forgot his name!) are amazing. Right from the start you can tell... More

We didn't book a tour as they were quite expensive we just took a taxi. What we should have done was paid for a guide $10 approx at the entrance but we were rushed through and just paid the $5 entrance fee. It was a big area to walk around and it's not very well signed. Although I understand that... More

Thank you for taking the time to write us a review! I apologize you were not able to request a guide at the ticket gate, you are correct the center currently has very limited signage so it can be difficult to navigate and know what you are seeing without one. We appreciate your feedback, and hope to have increased signage... More

The center does in house tours but these were full so we went with Betel Nut Tours (I know that there are others though) and our guide was Sam. She was great with the kids. Kept us together. Told us rescue stories. A very worthwhile day.
