If you are interested to know a bit more about the history of Kampong Ayer and about the life of inhabitants, you can visit this information center. You can also go to the tower and have a view over the village from above. It is a free access.

This tiny slice of kampung ayer life is worth the trip over the river.

With excellent displays and photographs of old Brunei Town, you can see how extensive the water village once was.

Kampong Ayer is classified as one village community with more than 30,000 people live in the city, and it brings the total population to 10% of the entire country of Brunei.

Mostly visitors can hire a speed boat to visit Kampong Ayer water, as it was open to publics everyday.

For me, the most interesting part was seeing that it is a town like any other, despite being built entirely above the water, this village composed of a large network of own electricity, plumbing, a school, mosque, police station and fire station on-the-water.

This is one of the principal tourist attractions of Brunei with a good sense to observe some local life.

Small but nice items on display explaining some Brunei history in English. Played hopscotch, some traditional games, learned a few things. Got a free "I heart Brunei" badge. Tourist shop and some sales displays where you can buy locally-weaved material, village products, even locally-produced glassblown souvenirs. Only accessible by water taxi so that was fun!

Get to see the city from the Gallery's tower. It's free of charge and you can also see the brief history of the water village.

This small museum is very well done with five small rooms of panels describing the history of Kampong Ayer and the traditions of its residents. It is very informative and all of the panels are translated into English. I recommend about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes to see the museum. Entry is FREE!

I visited Brunei for a day trip from Kota Kinabalu Sabah. Once we reached Brunei, we went straight to Kampong Ayer.
We parked at the nearby pier at the side of the road, here you can park everywhere, I think (Some even parked near a traffic light). You need to get across the river to go there. There's a boatman everywhere along the stretch of the river, you can call them up like calling a taxi (raise your hand and wave), depending on the boat (one with roof and one without, small boat or big boat) and your agreement with the boatman, the fare range about $2 for 1 person to $1 for 2 person (Brunei currency).
The cultural building is near Jeti 1 (First Pier). We walked here from Jeti 3 to have a looked at the village, it was quite a sight for those who never seen such village before. But the building is too commercialize, it was just like any other inside. You can have a look while you're at it, and don't forget to go to the observation tower (in the same building). Spend about 10minutes here, because the interesting part about Kampong Ayer is not the cultural building, it's the village itself. Go outside and explore.
