This Botanical Garden was established in 1936,during the Soviet times. It was an endeavor of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) branch Institute of Botany. The garden was developed over 16 hectares of land. Over 2,000 species of trees, shrubs and flowering plants are housed in greenhouses and open areas. The number of species may not seem impressive but when you realize that Baku was once barren desert with no flora or fauna you start appreciating this number. The effort has been made to preserve the gene pool of these species and to introduce new one. Thus you can find new areas like the Rose Corner and the Medicinal Plants Section. A must visit place if you wish to appreciate how this desert city was turned into a green one.

Baku's botanical garden isn't very big, but provides a good setting for those in need of a bit of green and fresh air outside the city center. Apart from a few locals, the garden was nearly empty at the time of visit.
The exhibited flora has small placards indicating names in latin and Azeri, but no further expanations are provided. The entry fee was 1 AZN at the time of writing. The garden has benches and both apshalt- and sand walking trails. 1 hour is largely enough to see the entire garden. To get there from the city center, count 10 minutes by taxi (ca. 5 AZN).

The botanical gardens have some interesting exhibits. There are a few interesting sculptures. If you want a quiet place with some shade it's a good place to visit on a hot day.

Recommend to take water with you or hot drink in a thermos. It is getting colder, and there is no cafe inside. It is very clean, as the team is taking good care of the park.
It has a large number of different trees and plants which are specific to different regions of Azerbaijan. They are cultivated there in special conditions.
On a sunny day, it is purely amazing! a lot of pine trees, so it will be green even after the leaves fall
