Gum market in Yerevan, Armenia is an invaluable attraction. The bazaar is decorated with crescent-shaped views and features gold carvings from the former Soviet Union. If you are taking a free walk in Yerevan or visiting the nearby Blue Mosque, my suggestion is not to miss the traditional Gum Market!

Every time I go to Gumi Shga I think that I will gain weigh because of the kindness of the buyers there, they keep say try this and that in order to buy.
I enjoy my time there trying different dried fruits and also with nuts.
instead of buying souvenirs you can buy dried fruits from the twin sisters.

I like markets, especially the spice-type ones. They remind me of Silk Road times, when the caravans travelled from the East and off-loaded their precious goods at markets like these. This one is large, colorful and exotic.
I suspect the magnificent trays with arranged dried fruits are mainly for tourists, but there are plenty of bulk goods which the locals would buy. Lots of Sujukh, the sweet strings of syrup coated dried fruits and nuts.
There is a section for cheese at the back and a clothing floor upstairs.

I wish you could review each vendor separately. There are honest vendors who will offer you samples and give you a fair price, but there are also those who see a foreigner as an invitation to overcharge. The vendor in the first sweets booth on the left when you enter from the northern entrance was very nice and gave a fair price. Guy selling honey further inside charged me about 3 times more than what the market charged. Lady selling fresh fruits overcharged my friend (who speaks Armenian). Luckily we both bought very little as we were just looking to try some local items and not bring them back home due to limited luggage space and custom restrictions. Those looking to buy more should go with a local friend or guide that is more familiar with prices. We had tried to inform ourselves by going to a local food market before, but still got taken. The clothing market upstairs was closed when we were there. One of the sweets vendors told us that the clothing vendors were all on vacation that week. Seemed like most of the shoppers were tourists.

The best food souvenir market. Dry fruits, cheese, wine and excellent Armenian hams at reasonable prices. Most importantly, bar guest behavior will attract your salespeople. Prices are competitive and you should choose carefully. You need about three hours to do it.

Having been to this market two separate years and having loved it, I was surprised to learn that it didn't have a TripAdvisor entry. I suspect it's because many local Armenians (and visiting Armenians) view this type of old-school food market as a thing of the past and prefer to go to gleaming modern supermarkets. Growing up in a Western country, I am the complete opposite. This market is awesome. Local farmers, bakers and food preparers come here and sell everything from fruits and vegetables to dried fruit sausages, to spices to meats. The prices are all clearly marked and very reasonably priced as geared mainly to locals. It's colourful, fragrant, busy and packed with hundreds of stalls of farmers, bakers etc that actually grow and prepare their own food.

It's an easy 15 minutes walk from Republic Square just past what (in my opinion) is a poorly designed brand new Cathedral of Saint Gregory the Illuminator; albeit worth a visit.

A convenient walk from Republic Square, this large market offers a variety of fruits (both fresh and dried), spices, nuts, and teas. There is also a section of cheese and meat. It's not crowded and all the prices seem 'fair.' The vendors are all friendly and many stands offer samples. We bought from one vendor who had it all. He had a good handle of English and proudly mentioned that he sold to Conan O'Brien (it's true, I watched the episode). We bought dried fruit rollups (I think it's called fruit lavash, because it resembles the bread!) and my visiting friend bought Saran-wrapped dried fruits and nuts for gifts back in the US. The vendor was honest and advised against buying certain products given my friend's trip duration (e.g., this item could be unrefrigerated for two weeks, but another product would need refrigeration after 7 days). Sadly, I can't recall his name, but a nice woman named Kristina worked with him.

If you have a half-hour to spare and are in the area, definitely check it out!

This review is quite late. The Gumi Shuka is a local market located a few blocks away from the Republic Square. Lots of fresh vegetables, dried fruits, and foodstuffs are available.

Be careful especially if you don't speak armenian or russian. Anyway if the price is not written you have to bargain. Some of the shops have tags and others don't but because of the former I thought they all had set prices. One seller overcharged me for a sujuk roll with fruit leave, and at first I did not realize because I was not yet familiar with the currency. I paid. Then after a few steps I realized and came back immediately and insisted he would refund part of it. He refused and told me to go. I stayed and asked his name and wanted to take a picture of his stall (not him) to warn other would-be customers online. He asked me not to take a picture and I did not, but he pushed me. I was shocked. Nobody around seemed to move. Be very careful at this place.
