The statue is located close to the Republic Square and it depicts one of the legendary warriors of Armenia. It's one of the places which tourists photograph a lot.

A famous military warrior, in early to mid 400 ad. The monument gives the impression the horse is leaping through the air with the leader astride, which makes it quite different from the norm.
legend has it that :
A horse rearing (both front legs in the air), the rider died in battle
one front leg up, the rider died of battle wounds
a horse standing, the rider died of natural causes.

One of the most significant monuments in the History of Armenia. A really good one for those who want to get closer to Armenian History and learn more about the important struggles of Armenians against Persian Kings. The monument itself cannot be defined as one of the beautiful ones in Yerevan, but surely it is an impressive and even a bit threatening one.

Well located, not too far from Republic Square.
In a small park, across the street from the Vernisage open market.

Vardan Mamikonyan statue on the street that bears his name. Vardan Mamikonyan was the hero and the leader of the Christian Armenian forces, who fought in the Battle of Avarayr against the Persians. The statue was placed in 1975 by sculptor Yervand Kochar. Yerevan has many impressive statues dotted about, this one stands out.

I was on my way to the Vernissage or Weekend Market when I passed by a huge monument. The horsemen in the statue is Vardan Mamikonyan, who is both a military leader and a martyr. You will find lots of monuments of prominent people all around Armenia. This is a good way to immortalize the memory of those who have in one way or another contributed in making Armenia a great country.

This statue is a masterpiece of famous sculptor Yervand Kochar. Located in Circular Park (Օղակաձեւ Զբոսայգի), the statue is standing apart from other monuments nearby, as it represents the Armenian liberation fight against Persian empire.
The statue of Vardan Mamikonyan was erected in 1985, and not in 1975 like it is incorrectly mentioned in one of reviews here. Vardan Mamikonyan was a commander of the 5th century, the chief of the Armenian Army, the leader of liberation movement of 450-451. Vardan Mamikonyan became especially known during Avarayr Battle between Armenians and Persians, which purpose was to turn Armenians from Christianity to Zoroastrianism. The battle took place in the 26th of May, 451 on the edge of the Tghmut River, in Avarayr field. Armenian Army had 66 000 soldiers and the Persian – 300 000 soldiers. The war ended with Persian’s victory. Nevertheless Armenians were able to preserve Christianity as state religion. Vardan Mamikonyan passed during this battle and later was canonized as a saint.
