boating along river with perfume-like aroma
Perfume River or Huong river flows through many forests of aromatic plants before reaching Hue, bringing with it a pure and fresh aroma,so locals called it Huong river, means river with perfume- like aroma. two weeks ago, when i visited Hue,i took a dragon boat twice.boating to dong ba market at the first time, another day boating to Thien Mu pagoda. you have to bargain with the owner of the dragon boat. it is a bit harder, but you can try,if the price fits your budget, then go ahead. along the river, you can see the famous Truong Tien Bridge, part of Hue city, and some local houses. i think perfume river more charming during night time, cuz the bridge will become colourful at night.

    Relaxing after the Imperial Palace
Visiting the Imperial Palace - Hue main attraction, will consume more than 2 hours with lot of walking. So, after that it was very relaxing to sit on a dragon boat and watch the scenery around while the boat gently sailed the Perfume river. As a guide explained the name derives from the plant fields away from Hue where the river flows through, bringing the aroma to the city (which I did not smell, honestly). Anyway, nothing unseen but relaxing and pleasant time.

Definitely worth a trip down on a dragon boat
The river is the focal point of Hue and very nice for a stroll alongside and to see the many old French colonial buildings and parks in this area. Beware though as mentioned by others the women selling boat tours are relentless! I went on one of the dragon boat trips and would certainly recommend as a) was very peaceful and scenic and b) why walk to the pagoda when you can pop on a boat? Yes, most of the boats have a lady selling things from a stall but none of our group found her pushy in any way (we approached her to see things). And, actually, there were some nice clothes and folding hats which we purchased.

    Perfume River!
Perfume River is a long river that flows through the city of Hue. Its name comes from the fact that various fragrances fall into its waters from along its banks and make it smell nice, or so the story goes... Taking a cruise along the river is a great idea as you get to see quite a lot of interesting things.

It is absolutely impossible to miss "Sông Huong" - the beautiful "Perfume River" - at any visit to Huê. It spans for over 80 kms, from the Truong Son Mountains to the very city center of Huê, before flowing into the Tam Giang Lagoon and the South China Sea. Its poetic name probably derives from the scents of flowers dropped in its waters from upriver orchards, mainly in the Fall months. Boat or river cruises can be easily arranged and are a great opportunity to check on some of Huê main tourist attractions, such as "Thien Mu Pagoda", "Huê Imperial City - The Citadel", "Hon Chen Temple" and the "Tomb of Minh Mang", among others. Its waterfront is quite lively, with awesome sunsets and the scenic evening lights of "Truong Tien Bridge". Great for long walks and relaxation. Enjoy!

There is a brilliant new project in Hue for these free rental bikes. You can pick up and drop off the bikes for free. at any of the marked locations. We just needed to show our passport/driving licence as identification. We cycled from point 1, the boat station, to the Thien Mu pagoda. It was mainly on a proper cycle/pedestrian path along the river (but still the occasional moped). We did the return trip to and from the pagoda with 2 adults and 2 children (age 11 and 14) and it worked really well. There are public toilets along the cycle path. We bought some drinks from a mini-mart shop about 1-2 km before the pagoda (much cheaper than tourist shops at the pagoda).

It is the symbol of Hue city separate the city to two parts, old one on the North with all the old construction, citadel,... Where the royal family and officals lived and the South one which used for citizens almost farmers and soldiers. It makes the city have 2 type of construction, one is ancients and historical and one is modern and fresh.

Was part of a trip booked which we had really enjoyed. The dragon boat trip on the river was the final part. We were sat enjoying the river when the lady passed us a card asking us to look at items and we decided to look. We didn't want anything but were put under a lot of pressure to buy something. In the end we did but due to the high pressure sales tactics ended up not seeing any of the river.
Avoid at all costs. Oh and don't accept any drinks, it appears at 1st that there's no cost for the drinks but they charge as soon as you finish the trip.
We saw about 2 min at the beginning of the trip and same at the end.
Very sad to have missed the full view of the river.
Only managed to get 1 terrible photo

The river is 80 kms long and before reaching Hue it passes through forests with aromic plants and supposed to have a special aroma as it passes through the city, but i think those days have long gone. However there are pleasant boat trips on the river but unfortunately we were unable to do this because of the miserable weather. However there are many interesting buildings, parks by the river and you can also see the boats going up and down, as well as fishermen in their smaller boats.

Very nice walk along the river amazing scents of flowers and plants in the parks.
At night it is lively with people singing and walking. The highlight is definitely the river's history. It's worth taking a little boat and enjoying the temples that surround it,

The river runs through the city Hue. People often take a boat to visit the Thien Mu Pagoda. It is very picturesque and several bridges crossed the river at the city centre. It is called the Perfume River because it it flows through many forests of aromatic plants before reaching Hue and it carried a fresh aroma.
