About
Located at no.58 Nguyen Phuc Nguyen Street, Xuan Hoa Village, on the left bank of Huong River, An Hien Garden House has lived and lingered for centuries. Apart from serving as the royal residence, its existence marks numerous ups and downs in history and the rigors of time. Now, An Hien is a graceful intersection of culture, architecture, and poetic landscape with a fascinating four-season garden for visitors to indulge in. In the olden days, when the princes get married, the King gives his blessings by granting them title, land, and “phủ” – which is the specific word for prince’s residence in Vietnamese. The title for princesses remains unchanged. However, they receive numerous luxury gifts and a large residence, “đệ” in Vietnamese, is one of the grandest presents from the King. At first, An Hien Garden House (also known as “Đệ An Hiên”) became the private home for the 18th princess of King Duc Duc. I was really interested to see a garden house in Hue. The An Hien Garden House has been kept in very good condition, has beautiful wood paneling and attractive huge wooden pillars in the front room, it was clean and dusted. I noted there were many nice curved openings in the walls for air circulation I think. The large garden area was filled with fruit trees but the ground everywhere had been raked so clean there wasn't a blade of grass - just bare earth. I was told to pay a minimal entrance fee and was given an official ticket which the ladies demanded back again after giving it to me. I requested a pamphlet or paper with information about the garden house but was told there was nothing available. I got the feeling that visitors were really not very welcome, however the two ladies became more enthused after they enquired what hotel I was staying at. At first I was told I could just walk around and have a look but then one of the young ladies went into the main house with me and explained it was 137 years old, one of Hue's princesses had lived there (I can't remember which number she said) and the men used the left side of the house, the women the right.
I think the most impressive thing was the wide, long, tree-lined, paved path leading to the house - without a dynamic guide or a pamphlet with interesting facts about the property this garden house is not worth visiting, most disappointing!
