Plenty of places to sit have a drink and watch the world go by. We went at about 5pm it’s not crowded then had a meal about 7 and left the crowd was starting to build then.

Super crazy when visiting for the first time, just trying to walk down the street is impossible without being approached by so many bar operators trying to entice you in and it is soo busy!
We settled on a bar right at the end of the junction for a beer on a tiny plastic stool and just took in Hanoi craziness while we drank, great people watching but also lots of traffic and fumes which wasn't so great. Fine for one drink to say that we had experienced the area, however as we are not students/tourists we will find nice places going forward!

Great staff and good rooms. Ideal for backpackers- Very social. Blacked out rooms so you can sleep in. Very helpful with any issues and good tours offered at reasonable prices. Will definitely stay again if back in Hanoi.

Dotted about in Hanoi are Bia Hoi shops. These are drinking places that only sell beer ( food too) and are usually only populated by the local inhabitants. They are rough and ready, a bit smokey but we didn't feel at all unwelcome in the couple we visited. The beer is poured out of a jug into your glasses and is freshly brewed and just ready for drinking and also quite tasty. The cost per glass when we were there was 18 Vietnamese dong very cheap. Well worth a visit.

Most places strangely seem to be plugging Heineken or Budweiser - I have no idea why as opposed to the local beer, they must be sponsored perhaps. However, other beers are the equivalent of 25 p! Who can turn up their noses at that!? It's not particularly traditional or historical any more but it's great for people watching. Locals and tourists seem to mingle alike here and all the chairs are out and the crowds large, it's a really nice area for anyone. Although I would keep your belongings and wits about you as lots of pickpockets and REALLY annoying donut selling ladies thrusting them all at everyone all the time, just give them one firm no and ignore them however rude it sounds otherwise you could end up scammed!

In the Old Quarter forget beer junction at Ta Hien, this is for the tourists and young, trendy Vietnamese, and now only serves bottled beer.
To get the real bia hoi you need to go to the corner of Bat Dan and Durong Thanh. This is where the locals go for the refreshing (and cheap) Hanoi draught beer and food that is not tailored specifically for westerners.

Great place to watch the locals go about their day. Very busy, very cheap. Good local beer straight from the keg and good local food. The small tables and little plastic chairs just add to the experience. A must see in Hanoi.

Originally famous for its Bia Hoi, the bars (sorry I mean ‘restaurants’) will flat out refuse to serve you the infamous drink. If your not buying food they will kick you out (even after sitting down). Do yourself a favour walk down the street turn left at the end and enjoy 4x cheaper food and drink.

Freshly brewed, dirt cheap beer, sitting on plastic chairs on a corner of a intersection of 5 roads in the midst of total chaos, what more could you ask for? Talk about great scooter, bike, cycling, car, bus watching along with woman cooking up local dishes offering them to this beer bar and to one opposite.

We had the bar’s salt and chilli dry pork ribs as an appetiser to go with our beers, can highly recommend them - delicious.

Spacious food, lots of bars, street service, a good beer. Try homemade beer. It's crowded in the evening. The staffs of the cafes invite food, but they are not too intrusive. Worth a visit. Otherwise if you do not go to the beer street you have not seen Hanoi ...
