It’s a street full of clothing shops and restaurants. Nothing too survey in my opinion.

I learned that each street in the area is named after a certain item sold like silk, fish sauce, goat meat, flowers, etc.

That round have been helpful for me to know ahead of time side I only had short window of time to find pure silk. Most stores sold silk blend- whatever that means.

Very busy street and absolutely great for buying anything made from Silk. Try the bars or the street food as you wander.

Lots of shops for clothing, household items, coffee & tea, with some really reasonable pricing too. Went to a shop (Thành Thuy clothing shop located at 117 Hang Gai Str) to get some traditional Vietnamese wear for my girl and a wool shawl for my mum. Shop lady super nice! Really good price and quality too.

I love the Hien Boutique at 40 Hang Gai Street. Great service and great prices that match quality of fabric and tailoring. I love my linen pants and want to buy another pair!

Dating back 1,000 years, much of the old shopping district was destroyed in the 19th century by war. Known as "Silk Street", this is one of the original 36 streets in Hanoi's Old Quarter shopping district. Each street name begins with "Hang" for Street, followed by the specific business or item located on the street for purchase, such as Hang Can: stationery; Hang Dau: shoes; etc. Hang Gai actually means "Hemp" street, when ropes and hammocks were originally sold along the street. Shop around carefully for luxurious Vietnamese silk items in boutiques, as opposed to imitation "silk" items from China. Tour the adjoining streets which are quite busy, nearly impassable in the flower and food areas. Note the ancient architecture and cross the streets with caution. Interesting and fun experience.

Walked Hang Gai Street several times from Serene Premier Hotel to Hoan Kiem Lake. I noticed lots of tourist shops, but nothing that really stood out.

I suggest that any of customers don’t go this place. My husband and I ordered one dress and one shirt. I paid $85 for a custom dress. It is quite expensive in Vietnam. It was exciting to have customized dress. Guess what? When I picked up my dress, there were stains on the front and the back of my new dress. This is made of silk. So, they told me that it will come out during cleaning. However, the “stain” in the front was actually a scratch. This won’t come out with cleaning. The owner didn’t tell me this damage, he just lied and said it was dirty. Also, I paid for everything. If you don’t waste your money, don’t go this place. I can’t wear this dress with this scratch. I am very disappointed. I think this place is a scam.

I got really excited reading all the reviews of buying silk garments and fabric but was disappointed that the shops did not live up to expectations. It was a really short street and the finished garments were not of very good silk quality, really thin. I also did not see many shops that sold silk fabric just a handful and there were no customers within those shops. Quite a number of shops selling local souvenirs so this street is not a silk street. Come mentally prepared.

Check out Silk Like (Hand Made Silk) at 11 Hang Gai (right in front of Cafe Pho Co). She also sells cool note books and t-shirts. Buy from her! She's awesome.

Well if you miss seeing Great Vietnamese lacquer at 45 Hang Gai (Song Thu art Gallery) and some exquisite handpainted porcelain at 64 Hang Gai (Hanoi Hannah) then you have only yourselves to blame.

And plenty of restaurants and yummy food and the best bia in Nth Vietnam Truch Bach too.
