"Visiting Vietnam without listening to a rhythm of ca tru traditional music means that you've not discovered the real spirit of Vietnam yet." "Free yourself and get immersed in ca tru while enjoying performance by Thang Long Ca Tru Theatre. It is a voluntary, non-profit group of ca tru musicians founded in 2006. Long-time history, unique instruments, impressive music tones and meaningful song lyrics made ca tru recognized by UNESCO as the World Intangible Cutural Heritage." "This is a concert for about 70 persons held in an old temple in the old quarter of Hanoi. They are good about explaining the instruments and the history of the music. They even let you come try out the instruments. The hot tea and little cake is a nice touch at intermission" "The singers had such dear, expressive faces and sang with such intensity. The instruments were unique and had a real otherworldly quality to them and the presentation and overall performance were of a very high quality. I felt delighted, entertained and educated. Well worth going to see."-Visited wrote The show is on every Thursday and Saturday night at 8pm at 28 Hang Buom (Quan De Temple).

The guy who said this was boring is obviously cultureless. I have to admit I don't generally like traditional dance or music performances and in the South of Vietnam it sounds like a cat being strangled. But this performance was great and the lady who runs this has revived this cultural music which was almost extinct and now she is... More

I saw only a small portion of the show, as we were late. It was my first introduction to to Catru Music. I enjoyed the performance.

Found by chance- delightful discovery of a rare traditional Vietnamese music - Catru. Beautifully performed with great humility by artists who a clearly Masters or soon to be Masters of their art. You don't need to understand the words to appreciate the music's magic. If this art form was better promoted you would only hear it in the great concert... More

First, let me put this caveat out : to me, Vietnamese Music is an acquired taste. It needs a bit of getting used to, before you can fully appreciate it. It's not similar to Chinese, Korean or Japanese music, which even though I do not understand their lyrics, I can easily relate to their melody and harmony. In this sense,... More

Ca trù music at the 28 Hàng Buóm is wonderful improvised music performed by a small, dedicated traditional group of musicians keeping this "UNESCO Cultural Heritage" alive. The performers are drawn from a group drawn from only 15 musicians, based in Hanoi. They create a wonderful one-hour performance of improvised music - reclaimed from its disreputable past. The performers give... More

Highly recommend this event. Nice refuge from the hustle and bustle of the old quarter. The setup is great, and you will have the opportunity to actually interact with the performance...

If you want to experience something authentic, ancient, and sublime amidst an otherwise insanely noisy & chaotic Ha Noise, Viet Nam, attend the ca tru concert here. It was a wonderful setting with a tiny audience and is well-suited to anyone who is sincerely interested in culture and music. If you are such a person, I recommend it highly.

This was a highlight of our trip to Hanoi. The water puppet show is charming, but this intimate and sincere musical performance touched my heart deeply. The space also adds ambiance to a night of rare, traditional Ca Tru music. The ever morphing ensemble explained the instrumentation they were using, and the tradition of Ca Tru which includes a little... More

I went there expecting great things considering the reviews here. I came back sorely disappointed and wanting my money back. Yeah, sure, the music and period costumes are authentic, but it is seriously boring. They play the exact same music many times over, only switching the singer, who sings in a not-so-good way (i.e, boring and monotone), in my opinion... More

My wife and I attended a Saturday night performance at the old theater/temple on Hang Buom Street, and it was absolutely delightful and educational. Music is the universal language...so even though you do not speak Vietnamese you can certainly feel the vibe of these folks through all kinds of musical expression and especially Ca Tru. The overall feel of the... More
