The building is beautiful with French architecture but the staff are lazy and rude when you need to use their services.

Worst experience EVER!!!!! The place was empty and it took us 1 hour to send some post cards. The staff was super rude and made everything they could to made the process super hard, specially pretending they didn't see us. Prices were very high so I have the impression that they might have overcharged us. Seriously! After spending 3 amazing weeks meeting lots of nice and friendly Vietnamese people, this was very disapointing. Even though we tried to speak a few words we know in their language to show we were making an effort, and using the translator, they were very very impolite pretending they didn't see or heard us. And also replying our questions in a very loud and non patient way. A very unpleasant and uncomfortable experience here in Hanoi. We used the services of the main post office in Saigon and there the lady was super helpful and friendly.

I have never been to a post office whilst travelling that had staff that are so unhelpful. On top of that, the little philatelic corner’s lady was just out to tout and overcharge for the stamps!! She told me to pay 35% more of what the stamps are worth!! Wth! This is an official post office. Not street vendor. So absurd!

Whenever strolling along Hanoi's "Hoàn Kiêm" - the "Lake of the Restored Sword", a building crowned by a huge clock will catch your attention. This is the city's "Central Postal Office" and opens daily from 7:30 AM to 8:30 PM. It is not really a tourist attraction, but a good option for mailing parcels or buying stamps. Enjoy!

We bought some stamps and post cards at the Post Office as we were walking along around the lake. I think this is like the central post office in Hanoi?

We've been travelling in Asia for a few months now and have sent back boxes of clothes or souvenirs in Thailand and Laos, so far. So we had an idea of what to expect, prices etc. My god it was off the scale expensive here!! We probably could have flown to Bangkok and gone to a post office there and sent out stuff for cheaper!! They wanted £90 for 5kg of stuff!!!!!
Staff were relatively unhelpful, you could tell they were uninterested in helping us when we wanted to buy a box or weigh our stuff...suggestion, have a weighing scale available to the public, then we wont keep pestering you to reweigh our stuff when we're try to loose 0.2kg!!
They also haggle over the box being 0.1kg over saying that we would then have to pay for the next band scale! Now we've had to throw stuff away that doesnt need to be thrown away.
Overall it was super stressful and totally ruined our day.
Suggestion #2: have an option that's cheaper but slower e.g. in Thailand we opted for the three months delivery time. We're travelling for 4 months so we're not fussed at when it arrives home! And I know other people were saying this when we were there too. Many more people would send their stuff home.

Rant over.

Nothing unique about this post office, other than it is conveniently located across the street from Hoan Kiem Lake. Great place to grab some stamps and post cards to document your trip or send a greeting to family back home.

Quite easy to find ,walking distance from Hoan Kiem Lake.
Oddly the counter staff direct you to Post Office Lady in the gift shop.
Lots of unused + first day covers
Willing to sell sets,or issues in a complete year .
Also some French colonial but outwith my pocket.
Very friendly and helpful although the lady speaks no English.

I sent a parcel from this post office to France and I was very pleased with the service provided. I paid around 60 euros for a box of around 6 kilos (width 50cm x height 20cm). I decided to send it by air and was told it would take between 2 to 4 weeks, in fact, the box arrived safe and sound in France within a week! They provide the box and you will have to complete a few forms for custom. They only accept cash payments but there is an ATM within the building and another one outside. They also provide a tracking number which is great for the peace of mind. I was worried about sending a parcel from Vietnam but there was no reason, the service is highly professional!

Even though they spoke very little English they understood what I needed and helped me out. You could buy postcards, stamps etc but of course for a high cost.
