Water puppetry is a form of art in Vietnam that has been in existence for over1000 years, ever since the rule of emperor Ly Thanh Tong. It depicts the culture of Vietnam and it's traditions. The water puppets are manipulated by puppeteers, immersed in waist deep water, located behind a bamboo screen. The action takes place on a stage which is really a pond. The puppeteers are only visible to the audience at the end of the show when they come out from behind the bamboo screen to take a bow.
The puppets - both human and animal, while dancing on water depict Vietnamese rural life which is largely based on agriculture, and also the now extinct Vietnamese monarchy. It is advisable to take a camera or a smart phone along to capture images of this colorful show.
Among the scenes were a dance between the Vietnamese holy animals - the Turtle, the Phoenix,Dragon and a fourth animal that is unknown, a scene of a tiger stalking ducks in a rice field, a skirmish between two angry Phoenix. All this drama is set against the backdrop of lively music and song provided by musicians seated cross legged on both sides of the stage. The show lasts about one hour.

We stumbled across this while walking the grounds of the Museum of Ethnology. It only cost about $4usd for a half hour show. It was all in Vietnamese, but fun to watch and would be a good activity for kids.

I went to this show in a building close to Hoan Kiem Lake (north side). I am not sure there are other theaters in the city. The ticket was very cheap (around 3-4$) and the show was long and beautiful.
Basically, it's a puppets show like I've seen in Europe, but the puppets come out of water, and that gives a completely different atmosphere. The stories are traditional Vietnamese legends which can look slow sometimes, but for sure are interesting.
The show is accompanied by live traditional music, with also a couple of strange musical instruments I had never seen before.
A must, I would say!

We were leaving the Museum of Ethnology when the poster caught our eye, and the manager invited us to the first ever night showing (19:15) for free! We were unsure at first because it sounded too good to be true, but we decided to give it a chance and waited at a nearby cafe and headed back. I'm glad we did!
The show has about a dozen acts each lasting a few minutes, and we were served some freshly picked and boiled tea during the show. The music is traditional, and you can see the musicians performing live in a little pagoda on the left, but the puppeteers are hidden by a screen the hangs down into the water.
As someone who doesn't understand Vietnamese, I think I could understand what was going on pretty well, though I might have missed a few jokes when everyone else laughed. At some point, we saw dragon puppets breathing fire and thrashing about the water. The enacted legend about the sword and the lake was also very interesting to see. I enjoyed the nighttime show as it makes it easier to see the puppets in the lamplight, and the atmosphere is much more mysterious and exciting.
As they had only a handful of guests the first night, we were treated very well. It's also a great conclusion to our evening spent at the museum, and I definitely recommend it.
* I think we saw a free show because it's the first night showing. They will probably charge for entry afterwards. Still, it's worth checking out!

Visited this very old and unique building that houses a very special part of Vietnamese culture. The Water Puppet Show. Located across from our accommodation (The Apricot Hotel) a very popular show with tourists and locals. The show itself is aimed at providing an insight into the culture and history of Vietnam. A show for young and old, thoroughly enjoyed wit the exception of those taking photos and videoing, should not be allowed, took away from those wanting to see and enjoy the acts.

We really enjoyed this show! Was very delightful! Unfortunately too many tourist holding their phones up through entire show and being seated during the performance was disruptive . As well someone lit up a cigarette during the show, which upset everyone around us! The show was good value and not to long. Everyone we talked to felt the same.

I was visiting the Museum of Ethnology when I stumbled upon this attraction. I had heard about Water Puppet Theaters and wanted to see a show so I decided to attend here. While I was waiting for the show to start I was joined by a young woman apprenticing with the theater who shared a lot about the background and history of the show. The group putting on this particular production is from the area where this art originated and thus hold special historical value. It added a lot to the experience for me to know that this was the real deal and that in seeing this show I was supporting this community.
The show itself was entertaining and quaint. It's interesting to see this method of story telling and despite the entire show being in Vietnamese each scene was given a quick description to help provide context.
After the show you get to learn a bit about the history and to interact with the puppets.
Overall, I loved the experience and would definitely recommend it!

It’s a must-see if you come to Vietnam. The combination between music and puppet. Spotlights and colorful flags adorn the stage and create a festive atmosphere

Hi is this the best water puppet show in Hanoi? Where is it and how do you book and how much is it? Thanks

There are lots of different shows you can see. We saw it at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, which is also great to walk round. Not very expensive, can’t remember exactly how much.
