- Crabby061Manchester, United Kingdom252 contributionsOther wordlyYes it is as stunning as people say, even if at times you struggle to get a view without one of the many boats. A lovely, relaxing respite from the hustle and bustle of the usual Vietnam tourist trail. And photos definitely don't do it justice. Just don't look down..........as the water pollution is pretty depressing. Plastic bags and bottles, food waste etc which can only come from the cruise boats. We went kayaking but got out after about 15 mins as we found it so unpleasant. So surprised the authorities and cruise companies don't take more responsibility to safeguard this natural beauty and their livelihoods.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 March 2023

- harry wBurlington, Canada1,072 contributionsShould take an overnight cruise at this unusual bay.The karst formations that stick up like pillars out of the water are a must see in Vietnam. It is picturesque from a distance, but would not like to swim or use the few beaches due to horrendous pollution here. We went in the off season, but July and August would have even more boats and tourists. The plastics and rubbish floating, and around the shore at the high water mark is disgusting. Some regulations need to be put in place before the bay becomes totally unnavigatable.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 April 2023

It is about 2h away from the town and then you board a boat. There are many options, many of them are good for overnight trips. The went for a day trip and had the change to sail between the beautiful islands and islets. Great experience. It was about 80AUD per head. - Jesse WJacksonville, Florida7 contributionsPolluted, crowded, and touristy but still worth it.HaLong bay is beautiful. There is a ton of garbage in the water and on the shores, but the views you will see are still great. The staff on the boats are all very good and they will make you feel like a VIP for a very reasonable price. The drinks on board the ships can be a bit expensive, but there are also local boats that come around to sell drinks much cheaper. They will come right up to your cabin. The majestic karst formations stood like ancient guardians, whispering secrets of eons past. The bay exudes a sacred and hidden power, as if the rocks themselves hold ancient tales.
Our boat glided through the calm waters, revealing hidden coves and limestone wonders. The view? Utterly scenic, like a dream painted by celestial brushes.
So, fellow wanderers, let Halong Bay weave its magic around you. It’s not just a place; it’s a serene symphony of nature

Why would one go there? Because of the nice pics. But the reality is different: Loads of boats anchoring close to each other with noise all over the place and the worst is the pollution with Plastic and oil. It was a phantistic site, now totally destroyed by mass tourism. It feels like the Vietnam government sets top just a few sites for tourism, overcrowds them to keep them from discovering Vietnam. It feels like crowd control.

We had a wonderful morning with Si from KAB Travel HaLong Bay who took us to the main tourist places of interest in HaLong as well as to local places well off the tourist track. Eating amazing chicken noodle soup in a local street side cafe and drinking Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk high up in the hills were memorable experiences.
Si was very courteous, efficient and caring. He guided me through the slippery fish market and over the busy roads. His English was excellent and he was just a lovely person to be with.
The pagoda we visited with him was the best we saw all holiday , so peaceful and calm.
I would thoroughly recommend Si and his company.

Visited whilst on a cruise and Halong Bay really is very beautiful. You'll notice that the water is polluted and I can't imagine that anybody would ever want to swim in it. A short boat tour around the bay and a stop off at a market selling tourist trinkets was about enough for us in such heat and humidity. Take a hat and cover yourself with sun cream.

As we stepped aboard the luxurious cruise, the emerald waters of Halong Bay glistened like jewels dotting the landscape. The ship's elegant design exuded an exotic charm, transporting us to a world where romance and natural splendor intertwined seamlessly.
Our private balcony suite offered a front-row seat to the breathtaking scenery. Towering limestone karsts, draped in verdant foliage, rose majestically from the bay like dragons descending from the heavens.
We sipped champagne as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of fiery orange and crimson – a spectacular sunset befitting this idyllic paradise.
The following day, we kayaked through hidden lagoons, marveling at the intricate rock formations and emerald waters teeming with marine life.
In the evening, we indulged in a candlelit dinner on the sundeck, savoring exquisite Vietnamese cuisine prepared by the cruise's talented chefs.
The gentle lapping of waves against the hull provided a soothing soundtrack to our romantic interlude.
On our final morning, we awoke to the serene sight of the bay shrouded in a misty veil, the karsts emerging like mythical beasts from the depths. As we reluctantly disembarked, we knew that the memories of our luxury cruise in Halong Bay would forever be etched in our hearts, a testament to the enduring allure of this exotic wonder.

I’ve heard that the waters are quite polluted with plastic and I still want to visit but I want to join a cleanup crew or volunteer organization to help collect floating debris for 2-3days. I see many articles mentioning cleanup efforts online but cannot find one to contact or inquire with. Can anyone recommend a specific business or nonprofit that organizes volunteer cleanup crews? Please help!!

Hi, I don't know if such groups exist but the boat I was on had stable kayaks and my son and I just paddled out and picked up rubbish as we paddled around and I would expect that kayaking would be available each day if you extended your stay a few more days. The Vietnamese Government has made some efforts to clean up Halong Bay over years and have banned some products. It may have been the tides but when we were there there was rubbish but it wasn't terrible. The place is pretty and definitely worth seeing and the Vietnamese people are very obliging. Just a Tip I was told re Tipping. One US Dollar was about 20 Dong. If you are going to Tip don't Tip below 1 US Dollar. There is smaller Dong Currencies and you will get used to large bills that in the end are not huge on conversion. Regards Robert

I am planning to do a 3 day 2 night cruise with my mum for her 60th. How can I tell if a cruise will go to new areas each day without dropping off passengers who booked a one night cruise? Are there any cruises you can recommend that stay out the entire time without changing guests? Thank you

Hi John, sorry for the long delay in answering your question, but I haven't visited Tripadvisor for a while due to not having travelled overseas since lockdown began.
Our trip included an overnight stay in Halong Bay, on a junk boat, and I have to admit I was sceptical regarding how comfortable that would be. It turned out to be the highlight of a ten-week trip that took in 11 different countries.
This particular part of the trip was a 17 day tour through Vietnam and Cambodia, arranged through G-Adventures, which began when we met with other travellers in Hanoi and our overnight at Halong Bay was on our second day in Vietnam.
I can't recommend it highly enough. Waking up in the morning, with a view of the karsts from our bedroom window, was breathtaking. The beds were great and the food onboard was excellent. I can't fault it in any way. I've uploaded loads of photos taken onboard the junk boat and hopefully you can find some of them to see what I'm talking about.
If I can answer anything more specifically, please feel free to ask. I promise to check in here more frequently in future.

My wife and I are planning a 2d/1n Halong Bay cruise with Dragon's Pearl in March. I chatted with one of Indochina Junk's customer support agents on their website and was quoted $185 per person for the trip.
I have read elsewhere on Trip Advisor that I might be better off booking a Halong Bay cruise once I reach Hanoi, as opposed to booking it online in advance. Does this advice apply to cruises booked directly with Indochina Junk as well - i.e. is it really possible to get a much cheaper deal on the Dragon's Pearl after speaking to a travel agent in Hanoi than if I booked online directly with the company?
Thanks for your help!

I just recently spent 3D2N in Ambassadors Cruise and I must sayit is worth the experience. Whether you are to book with a travel agency or by yourself, it would be a good deal being with Ambassadors Cruise as the staff are so friendly and accommodating
Our family of 5 took the one day 4/5 hour lunch cruise at Ha Long Bay. Our hotel in Haiphong kindly connected us to a wonderful, safe driver, Huu and our host, Thao. We recommend leaving around 10:30am from Haiphong to avoid the foggy morning and to enjoy a clearer view of the islets. We stopped along the way to an oyster pearl shop, where they demonstrated how to culture pearls. The lunch on the cruise was wonderful. It was not just fish and seafood but also meat too. A good variety. We also had the chance to go kayaking or ride on a bamboo small boat paddled by men who brought us to two beautiful caves in the waters. Don’t forget to tip them. We got back onto the same boat and stopped at two walking caves. Bring your older sneakers. It felt like a good hike. Our host, Thao, took us to two amazing caves. We even tried some special local ice cream sold only in Ha Long Bay. Our kids loved it and wished we tried it again after the cruise was finished. This place is about 1 1/2 hours drive from Haiphong. Better to stay around here than come from Hanoi unless you plan to do the 2 night cruise.
One day for about 4-5 hours was plenty to see for our family of five: 2 adults, 2 older teens, and a preschooler. We were pretty tired afterwards, but this was definitely the highlight of our time while we were staying in Haiphong.
Tickets for 5 cost us about $373.00 USD.. If you enjoy the ocean, you will find this very relaxing.

reclim is correct. However, here is something else to consider.
There are generally two ways to drive. Although we had a private tour for most of our trip, our tour company transferred us from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay via a group van. We only had one other couple in the van so that was not an issue. However, the van makes two stops on the way, supposedly for bathroom breaks but each stop is at a giant tourist souvenir venue, each stop is 40-45 minutes instead of one ten minute stop, or no stop if you don't need a bathroom break at all. They pick you up at 8 am, it is a 2 hour drive non-stop but with the breaks it is 3 1/2 hours. The boat loads at around 2 pm as I recall. Undoubtedly, the van gets paid to stop at the giant souvenir shops, so your ride is longer but cheaper than a taxi.
Second, because of the route of the souvenir shops, it is a more local route with lots of traffic and traffic lights, usually two lanes in each direction, the right lane being mainly for motorbikes. The drive is constantly going in the lane of oncoming traffic to pass cars and trucks. It is hair raising but fun. Fasten your seat belt tightly. On the other hand, if you have a private taxi or car and are willing to pay more in tolls, you can drive on a highway that takes much less time, which means you can leave at 11 am and get there before 1 pm/1300 to check in way before 2 pm/1400.
So you need to consider how you want to go, leave at 8 am on local roads with sales shop stops and other passengers for less money, or go on a seer highway and pay much more, I don't know how much.
