Do 3 days if you can!
We did 2 days and regretted that we should have done for 3 days. We had only nearly 1 full day to enjoy the scenery and services on cruise. It's rush. We had to spend much time for transfers from/to Hanoi. So do 3 days if you can. It's worth visiting!

    A geological wonder
Ha Long Bay is a geological wonder, with endless beautiful karst limestone islands. We chartered a boat for the day, Ha Long Lotus Cruises, which was great: we all had cabins even though it was not an overnight trip, and we brought along a chef who prepared both lunch and dinner (excellent food). We stopped at one of the big caves; having seen a lot of limestone caves along with various stactites and stalagmites, I could have passed on this aspect of the day - the caves were interesting but not spectacular, and they were VERY crowded. That's the only problem with Ha Long - there are a ton of tourists and tour boats. We made a final stop at Ti Top island to swim off the beach; it was also crowded, but the water was nice. But mostly the pleasure of the day was cruising through these waters surrounded by beautiful scenery.

It was rainy in morning but got sunshine from noon and the weather did support our trip pretty much. Our overnight Cruise package was brilliant and we love our kayaking time the most

It is a beautiful area and very picture taking worth, but it is just so overcrowded.

Never in my life have seen so many large ships in such a confined area. Also it seems the bay is used as a dumping ground. Never ever seen so much garbage in the sea! Just incredibly sad and therefore can only advice to stay away from this area so it can return to its prestine beauty!

The water is clearly NOT suitable for swimming as you can see the garbage and oil floating on the water. Also the fisherman dump their toilets in the water. The smell was overall not pleasant, mainly fumes from the boats.

I just hope that Vietnam restricts the visitors extremely and that they do something about the waste water and garbage.... if you can find a more quiet part of the bay with a personal boat if you really want to go..

Halong Bay is undeniably stunning, a sight to behold. But honestly, the amount of rubbish floating around was a major buzzkill. And the constant swarm of boats kinda ruins the peaceful vibe. It's a shame, because the natural beauty is incredible. Just be prepared for a bit of a crowded, messy experience.

WE visited Ha Long Bay whilst on a cruise ship. The ship cruised into the bay through the various islands, was truly amazing. Later that day we boarded a smaller boat to do a cruise around the islands stopping off at more that one.

the sights were amazing and in particular the reflections during sunset. Highly recommend.

'Get Your Guide' tour.
Amazing. I had been advised not to go because of the weight of tourists, but went against that advice and was pleased to have done so: With expectations well managed, this was a fantastic day trip from Hanoi. Yes, there were lots of other boats / people, but managed to look past them. Special highlight was canoeing in a lagoon completely surrounded by lushly forested cliffs, save for the small cave we paddled through to get there.
The boat we were on was very functional, with air-conditioning (plus food, drinks aplenty) on the ground level and open air upstairs.
Our guide (Mr Phong) was very good, allowing plenty of time at each location.
Overall, a very memorable experience.

I travelled from Hanoi to Ha Long for the day with nothing more than an inflatable paddle board, a good idea of what to expect and some basic Vietnamese.

Bear in mind it's over a 2 hour drive depending on traffic and time of day you depart.
The driver may stop once at a roadside market to top up refreshments but don't count on it.
There's numerous tour bus companies that operate between Hanoi and Ha Long so do your research for prices if you're on a budget.
I wasn't so I hired the whole bus for myself. I paid about £70 for two ways to have the whole bus with TV, WiFi and free water which was an absolute bargain in my opinion.
I left around 5am stopped once at the services and arrived in Ha Long just after 7:30am.

Again depending on the service you can negotiate where you wish to be dropped off.
If you're going for a cruise I suggest heading directly for the port terminal as it's a bit of a walk from anything else and queues can form quickly especially in the peak seasons.

Once I departed the bus I ordered a taxi via the Grab app (a must have in Vietnam unless you have your own transport).
I got in and just said to the driver "take me somewhere you recommend for breakfast that is popular with the locals".
Man did he deliver!
Like all Vietnamese people he was very friendly and chatty wanting to know where I was from, how long I'm staying, my purpose etc.
He drove roughly 10 mins from the ferry port into the centre of town through some tiny back alleys then stopped.
I was surprised because I didn't think there was anything nearby.

He opened the door and gestured down a gap between two buildings and said he would wait.
I invited him to join me but politely declined.

It opened up into a quaint mini mall absolutely packed with locals enjoying their breakfast who all simultaneously stopped eating and turned to see the large white English guy, who I'm guessing doesn't frequent this part of town too often, I was also met with lots of smiles and many Xin chào so ít wasn't uncomfortable or unwelcoming.
There was also a convenience store, a couple of clothing stores and a restaurant nearby.

I sat and ordered what everyone else was eating (Banh Cuon - Steamed rice roll) stuffed with tender shredded pork vegetables accompanied with a tangy sweet glaze.
I also ordered a mini Phố and a coffee all of which were made to a very high standard.

I thanked the owner, said goodbye to everyone outside and hopped back in the taxi and just said "lets go to a sandy beach where people swim"
Note: Not all beaches in Ha Long are good for swimming due to traffic on the water etc.
Again a huge shout out to my driver who knew exactly where to go and was all too happy to take me as he said business was slow and he could make more by being my personal chauffer for the day than waiting for a local fare.
Now I know it's not the etiquette in Vietnam but I insisted on giving this man a tip for his efforts and after refusing multiple times I managed to break him into accepting and he was exceptionally greatful.

I jumped on the board and made a B-line for the islands with Cát Bà at my 12 o'clock.
Unfortunately however like an absolute rookie I forgot the suncream and realised 15 min in to my paddle I was burning badly and headed back to sit in the shade at a local bar.
(ended up with heat stroke and 2nd degree burns and blisters on 75% of my body by that evening).
Also got nibbled by some tiny fish in the bay which drew blood and were surprisingly painful so it's something to consider if you have minors.

I went back after my burns had healed two weeks later, paddled all day around the insanely beautiful limestone islands, saw a huge diversity of fish and plants.
In my opinion it's a better pace to explore than the cruise as long as you check the tide, the weather, preplan your route and are ready for a beast of a paddle session.

In the city there's also plenty to see and do with an array of shops to suit everyone, arcades, mall, little nooks full of stalls, cafe's, history and viewing spots to get a panoramic shot.

Put it this way out of everywhere I've ever been Ha Long would be where I retire.
Once in a life time absolute must see so make the effort to go.
