About
Soi Dog Foundation is S.E. Asia’s largest rescue organisation for vulnerable stray dogs and cats. For 20 years, supported by generous donations and global volunteers, SDF has worked tirelessly to reduce animal suffering through CNVR (Catch; Neuter; Vaccinate; Return) programmes. For animals unable to be returned safely to the streets, SDF provides sanctuary, as well as local and international adoption services. SDF is a haven where sick and vulnerable dogs and cats receive world-class medical care, and love. SDF is working in several countries to help end the inhumane and barbaric dog meat trade. Guided tours available Monday-Friday at 10:00am and 1:30pm. Following the 40-minute tour, visitors are encouraged to socialise with our lovely cats and dogs. Impromtu tours are not available between 11:30am and 1:00pm, although between these times, visitors are invited to socialise in the cattery or spend time in the visitor centre. Volunteers are welcome Monday to Friday from 9am.

Visiting the Soi Dog foundation was an amazing experience! The tour was very informative and it is obvious the staff care deeply about the animals in their care and ensure they are well looked after.
It is also SO fun to play with the puppies and kittens! I highly recommend if you are in Phuket :)

Visiting and volunteering at Soi Dog Foundation is an incredible experience I would highly recommend to anyone!
You are warmly welcomed by an amazing staff which provides free guided tours in the morning and in the afternoon (Monday to Friday). During your visit, you will learn about the Foundation's beginnings and the incredible work that has been done to improve animal welfare in Asia. You can also spend some time playing with the puppies and the cats in the cattery. Believe me, you won't want to leave this place once you've seen how adorable they are!
One of the most fulfilling activities you can do is to become a volunteer at the shelter. I would definitely recommend to spend as much time as you can there to build up a strong bond with the animals. Not only will you feel you're doing something worthwhile but you will also meet wonderful people with shared values and many dogs to fall in love with.
You should not miss the opportunity to visit this wonderful sanctuary, you'll love it!

Dear 529thag,
Thank you for visiting Soi Dog and the excellent review!
It is so important for us that everyone who visits or volunteers at Soi Dog learns about the important work being done to end the suffering of animals in Asia.
The puppies and cats love to welcome and interact with our visitors. Like you mentioned, staying longer and volunteering really enriches the lives of the dogs and cats living here. All of our volunteers make many new furry and human friends during their time at Soi Dog.
We hope to welcome you back soon.
Best wishes.

Lovely experience and an insight in to the wonderful and valuable work they do. We did the 1000 tour. But as we arrived early we had time to play with the cats in the cattery. All friendly and desperate for attention. At the end of the tour we got to play with the puppies (6 months onwards) for a decent amount of time. Well worth a visit. Volunteering is available xheck the website for details.

I was leaving a snooker club at 9:00 at night. I saw a dog laying on the sidewalk. It had a broken leg and the bones were sticking out through the skin. I had some water in the car and 3 Oreo cookies. I left them for the dog. He didn't eat or drink. I went to a 7-11 and bought some dog food for him, and I went home. That night I searched for an animal shelter and found Soi Dog Foundation. I emailed them and said I was willing to bring the dog to Phuket which is a 7 hour drive one way. They didn't email me back. The next morning we took the dog to a veterinarian and paid $200 to get it a pain killer shot and have the wounds cleaned. My Thai wife called the Soi Dog Foundation at 12:00. The idiot woman that answered the phone said that because we tried to feed the dog, it wasn't a stray dog. She said it was now OUR DOG, and they wouldn't accept it. She said it many times. It's YOUR DOG NOW! We will not accept it! So we had 3 choices; put it back on the street to suffer and die, try to kill it, or pay $3,000 to get an operation to remove the leg and clean his other wounds. Looked like he was hit by a car. We had the veterinarian call the Soi Dog Foundation, and we called them a few more times. After talking to other staff for 2 days and mentioning that I was an American, they said we could bring the dog. We drove the 7 hours to Phuket. They took the dog and 30 minutes later they called us. First they said he was an old dog. I knew what was coming next. Then they said they would give it a shot and kill it.
If this dog belonged to the royal family they would have tried to save it.
The moral of the story is that if you find an injured, crippled dog that can't walk, don't give it water or food. And don't bother fighting with the Soi dog Foundation for 2 days to take it. Just save yourself a lot of time, money, and aggravation, and kill it.

Dear M4531PEpauln,
We would like to thank you for everything you did to try to help this dog and relieve his suffering.
We are very sorry to hear of your dissatisfaction when communicating with our staff. This is something we have looked into - email threads, call records and LINE messages - as we continually look to provide the best possible interaction between our hospital team and members of the public reporting animals in need. On this occasion, we found that they acted in a professional manner, with the welfare of the animal their primary concern. Please be assured we do the very best we can in what can often be very challenging and emotional circumstances.
Each individual case is assessed solely on the health of the dog or cat. Sometimes when the animal is a long distance away and in bad condition, it is not always safe or kind to have them travel such a distance, and working with veterinary clinics in the local area is sometimes a more compassionate and effective option.
Euthanasia is not a decision our medical team ever takes lightly and will only ever be performed as a last resort to relieve suffering. In this particular case the dog had multiple other health conditions which meant he was in a lot of pain and highly unlikely to survive a complex surgery.
After a full review, we are confident the correct decision was made in the best interest of the dog.
Once again, we want to thank you for helping this dog and showing him love and compassion when he was suffering so much.
Best wishes.

I have been a supporter of Soi Dog for many years and as I was on Holiday in Phuket I could not miss the opportunity to visit them.
A lovely lady called Silvia gave us a tour of the facilities and told us all about the origins and the work done that is done there.
Our visit was amazing and it was truly wonderful to see the care and compassion the dedicated people who work and volunteer at Soi Dog show for all of the animals.
Everyone was very welcoming and the facilities for the animals are beyond anything we could have imagined, they even have therapy pools for them.
Meeting the dog and cat guests was an absolute pleasure and brought many a tear to the eye but you could see how well they are looked after.
If you are in Phuket please consider visiting, it is a truly humbling experience.
Well done and Thank You all at Soi Dog you are amazing people.

Hello, does anyone know anything about a group called 'Dog Meat Survivor' or 'Dog Meat Savior?' (They have used both names, and they called themselves the 'Humane Society' for a short time. They don't reply to my queries, and I find their customer service phone contact number rather odd. I worry some groups are preying on people who want to help save these dogs and simply scamming people out of their donations. I've contacted other animal welfare groups with this question. No one has responded. Can anyone shed any light on any of these groups?

Hi Sebastian,
And sorry for the late reply!
We are always in need of a variety of items. We have over 1,000 dogs and 350 cats, so things like leads, toys and poo bags are always very much appreciated!
You can find a full wish list of items on the Soi Dog website under 'How You Can Help > Donate Supplies'.
Thanks so much!

I am wondering, when one US dollar is worth 30 baht why 29 us dollars only cares for one dog for one month? Seem like the exchange rate would go further to care for the animals.
Sam M
Phuket, Thailand7 contributions
Dear Robin,
$29 is the amount to sponsor a dog here at Soi Dog Foundation. For this, you receive regular updates throughout the year from your sponsor dog, including photos and updates. The information on the sponsor page on our website also states that your monthly subscription fee also goes not only towards your sponsor dog but also towards helping other animals under the care of Soi Dog.
We hope this helps!
Many thanks.

I am wondering who pays the air fares (& a volunteer escorting animal?) for the many (dogs) that are adopted by Canadians & USA people. I know they are fantastic animal parents! But this ads alot to the costs of adoption. Have been doing alot of reading re your rescue and considering a bequest in my will when I rewrite it shortly. Keep up your great work. You obviously do an amazing job - with lots .... & lots .... of free spay/neutering. The only way we are going to make any dent in the unwanted/homeless/stray animal problem the world over. Not enough (PRIVATE VETS) perform enough of these services - FOR FREE (or just a few $$$ to cover medications/equipment used.) Best wishes to you all. Victoria Pinkerton.

Dear Victoria,
Firstly, thank you so much for considering Soi Dog in your legacy plans. This is a truly wonderful gesture.
And, to answer your question about flight volunteers and adopted animals - The travel costs of animals from Soi Dog and travelling overseas are covered by the adopter. This includes the excess baggage fee that the animals travel under, the travel crate, and any administrative fees ( dictated by the airline and import/export authorities). The costs associated with the flight volunteer (airline tickets etc) are covered by the flight volunteer themselves. We hope this helps! Many thanks.
Victoria P

Who pays for all the flights for animals and does a volunteer escort each animal? I understand an animal could not be sent on such a long flight (typically Thailand to USA or Canada) alone - particularly an animal who has known ill-treatment and has 'issues' with people - poor little things. It is wonderful you have so many international odopters & seem to place so many dogs to Canada etc. Bless you all for the work you do in saving & loving so many animals. I am certainly seriously considering a bequest in my will to Soi Dog foundation.

I think you would get a more informed response if you were to address the question directly to the foundation. And wonderful thought re: your Will!
