- SarahLincoln, United Kingdom637 contributionsPhallic rocksWe didn’t really know quite what to expect but this was a stop on a tour we did. The ‘grandpa’ and ‘grandma’ names insinuate that this is going to be something wholesome, yet it’s actually just phallic rocks in the shape of female & male genitalia, which was a bit strange, and the sea was too high to see ‘grandma’ anyway. Putting that to one side, the sea looked nice & there were lots of small snack & souvenir stands- one selling the most delicious coconut icecream imaginable, in a coconut shell decorated with orchids, for a mere 50bht. Unless you’re into phallic shaped rocks, skip those & just go for the ice cream!Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 28 November 2023
- Nick HSt Leonards-on-Sea, United Kingdom569 contributionsUnusual, but worth a quick visitIt is what it is, two rock formations, although one is more obvious than t'other! Down a narrow road from the ringroad, with paid parking. Numerous small shops and stalls vieing for the attention of the visiting tourists exist on both sides of the road. It is must do, however, it is hot there with no shade out on the rocks, so go see and leave.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 March 2024
- RedMaccaLiverpool, United Kingdom476 contributionsPopular attractionKoh Samui is quite a bit short of attractions. The Big Buddha was only built in the 70s, the best waterfall is redolent of a dripping tap until the rainy season kicks in properly, a fairy garden of Buddha statues in the middle of nowhere, a mummified monk in a nondescript temple in the mountains and Lamai Temple thinks papier-mâché figures are going to pull the crowds in. You’ve seen the pictures, you know what you’re going to see before you get here. I did. I still went. A few photos, a hunt for Grandma’s Rock (which could be any of 8, really) and awayyyy, as Bob Mortimer would say.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 June 2024
- Hi Samui HostelKo Samui, Thailand75 contributionsFascinating Hin Ta Hin Yai rock formations om Ko Samui!During my recent trip to Koh Samui, I had the chance to visit the fascinating Hin Ta Hin Yai rock formations, also known as the Grandfather and Grandmother rocks. Nestled on the southeastern coast of the island, these unique formations have become a must-see attraction for anyone visiting the area. Getting there was a breeze; I rented a motorbike and took a scenic 30-minute ride from Chaweng Beach. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the sight of these unusual rocks, which are famous for their shapes that humorously resemble male and female genitalia. It was quite the sight and definitely made for some fun photos! I spent a few hours exploring the area, checking out the small shops nearby, and enjoying a delicious meal at one of the local restaurants. The highlight of my visit was the Samui Rock Bar, which is just a stone's throw away from the rocks. This bar is perfect for unwinding, especially as the sun begins to set. With reggae music playing in the background and the occasional fire show, it created a vibrant atmosphere that was hard to resist. As the sun dipped below the horizon, I found myself captivated by the stunning views. The combination of the unique rock formations and the beautiful sunset made for an unforgettable experience. Although the rocks might seem a bit cheeky, they truly added a playful touch to my trip. If you ever find yourself in Koh Samui, don’t miss the chance to visit Hin Ta Hin Yai. It's a quirky yet memorable part of the island that offers a perfect blend of nature, culture, and fun!Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 25 August 2024

Also called grandfather, grandmother rocks because rocks formation looks like a restricted parts of a Male and female body.that was interesting. Water colour of that parts of sea was imagined in the time between 12pm to 3PM .

Completely missing the attraction of these two phallic-like rocks. What a waste of time! We were on a 1/2 day island tour so it was included. Had I known it was so ridiculous, I would have told them to keep driving. My husband is an avid amateur photographer, and even he couldn't see anything useful here.
Move on to the famous statues and leave these rocks to erode in the water.

Stopped while passing to take a look at rocks. If driving there is a car park to the right just before the rocks, 30 baht for cars, 10 baht for bikes. There are some cute little stalls as you approach the rocks with many of them selling caramel coconut and the usual tourist wares. The rocks themselves only take a minute or two to look at, nothing special, one thats a bit phallic, good for quick photo. Apart from that, nothing much there

If you go there without too much expectation I think you'll love them.
At the end of the day, it's meant to be some pretty rock formations that just so happen to resemble his and hers bits! That's about it.
Along with the usual car park fee, souvenir shops, street food and refreshment stands!
Also the usual lack of health & safety, so do go here with trainers/grippy shoes at the very least and NOT flip flops, as otherwise you may end up landing on rocks/in the sea as it is especially slippery, particularly when walking down to see the Grandmother Rock.
It is, however, a very scenic spot for photos along the coastline, so worth a quick visit - it's a nice stopping point if you are doing one of the full island tours as we were.

These rocks has a special meaning for the Thai people in Samui. It is a small place which is often crowded. But it doesn’t cost anything except for 10 TBH for parking the scooter. Take the time and visit these ancient cliffs and look at the waves hitting the shore.

As a parent, I understand the importance of finding unique and educational experiences for my family while on vacation. That's why I highly recommend a visit to Hin Ta (Grandfather) and Hin Ya (Grandmother Rocks) during your trip to Koh Samui. This natural wonder is not only fascinating from a geological perspective, but also offers stunning views of the surrounding scenery. Our baby was amazed by the intricate details and textures created by the erosion process and we loved learning about the legends associated with the rocks. The nearby beach is also perfect for families, with shallow water that's great for splashing around and observing marine life. Although the rock formations themselves may not be suitable for very young children, the beach and nearby areas provide plenty of opportunities for family-friendly fun. Our visit to Hin Yai was a highlight of our trip to Koh Samui and I would definitely recommend it to other families looking for a positive and memorable experience.

A very nice outcropping of rocks which lend themselves to use as a trail & photo op. Trip to this Southern portion from Bophut took about 30 min. Well worth it. Lovely selection of stalls selling foods & souvenirs. Lots of inexpensive parking & midweek March is certainly not busy.

The rocks themselves are very vaguely shaped as human genitals if you look at them from the right place.
The beach is very nice and there's a cool little cafe playing music.
Other than that, the souvineer places and the food and drink are all over priced there for tourists.
It's worth a half hour visit to have a look, but it's really just something to see if you are driving past.

For foreigner I think you should use Traveline services so they can give you more information about the stories of each place :)

Very little, on our tour nothing was explained. We were dropped off and told we had 20 mins to view it.
