The gate is worth the visit, looks like its been restored, rebuilt. But you do get a scense of what it would have been like in the past. Pidgeons everywhere if your interested in feeding them you can purchase seed of the locals at the...More

We made a mission of seeing all the gates to old town in Chiang Mai, worth it, as you walk along the moat you can see all the gates - including the Tha Phae Gate - and the corners of the ancient moat wall. They...More

Chiang Mai's old city is surrounded by a moat, the remnants of old city walls and several old city gates. This single eastern gate is by far the best gate with a large pedestrian courtyard where tourists feed flocks of pigeons -- other gates are...More

The gate is part of the old city's defence system. Very nice old structure witg lots of things to do nearby. When you are in the city centre you cant miss it

Some well preserved or repaired walls, a plaza with lots of pigeons, and some be bagged looking out over the canal. Nothing much else.

Busy area with a neat recreation of the gate through the wall around the old city. Nice restaurants in the area. A lot of pigeons and people selling bird feed.

Once city was walled, now just few parts are left. This gate is great as meeting point, Because is between old part and new across the river

As far as I know the lanterns are really a big deal on New Years Eve. During other times of the year I could not answer with any certainty.
