- Cornfed9505150 contributionsPanda Exhibit ClosedWe went to the zoo after looking it up online and seeing that they have a panda exhibit. We arrived early in the am to avoid the heat so there were not many people to contend with. We rented a golf cart since the zoo if located in fairly mountainous terrain, and walking would be a lot of up and down over a two hundred acre area. I wasn’t pleased to find out that the golf cart rentals were cash only, or the response from young lady working the rental, who told us if we needed cash to leave the zoo and go to the bank. Luckily, we had enough to just cover a two hour rental. The zoo was clean and uncrowded. We were able to get to the various exhibits without any difficulty and saw a good amount of animals. We were extremely disappointed to find out that the panda exhibit was closed, and had been for some time. There was no mention of this at the zoo entrance or the zoo website. This is an average city zoo. The consolation prize is that we did get to see a sun bear.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 November 2023
- Wendy J183 contributionsFantastic zooI wasn’t sure about going as reviews were not that great - but wow so glad we went. Its was amazing got close up to hippos, giraffes and elephants you could feed them all. Sat I. Tortoise enclosure which was brilliant. The way the zoo is set out is great -yes lots of walking but so much to see even without Pandas and aquarium- it’s a must visit and so glad we went.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 December 2023
- Dan KThe Hague, The Netherlands8,884 contributionsRent a golf buggy for the best experienceFirst of all, this zoo is massive. The animal enclosures are spread out over the zoo, which is located at the base of Doi Suthep mountain. The roads and oaths are very hilly and sometimes even very steep. Exploring this on foot is possible, but will be quite challenging to do in the heat. Since we were visiting with children, we decided to rent a golf buggy to navigate the zoo. You get a machine time stamped card when you depart and pay 300 baht per hour. The first hour being 250 baht, and with a 15 minute grace period. There was a lot of construction work going on during our visit. The aquarium was closed, for that matter. Unfortunately, the giant panda died in April. But the enclosure is still open, now with cardboard pictures or panda. There even still is a security guard sitting in the panda enclosure guarding… cardboard pictures of giant pandas. A lot of roads were closed, unclear if those would lead to parts of the zoo we did not explore or were just service roads. We saw some walking paths that looked pretty cool, but would be impossible to do with young children in a pram. So the buggy was a very good idea. For our next visit, I would plan around the parking spots and animal enclosures a bit better. As sometimes we passed an enclosure that would’ve been cool to explosie, only we could not backtrack anymore (unless we circled the whole zoo). Nonetheless, we had a very fun afternoon. There is a small restaurant where you can eat a couple of basic Thai dishes. The zoo has a ‘say no to plastic policy’, but there’s a large plastic screen from where you order food. Which is served on a cardboard plate with plastic cutlery. Drink bottles are all of plastic (rather than glass), so not sure what the way no to plastic policy actually means. Thai zoos are very different than their counterparts in the western world (if I may draw an east-west comparison, for that matter).Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 21 December 2023
- Hans FGliwice, Poland8 contributionsThe panda is deadThe experience was kinda depressing tbh. But it might just my taste. I’m not a big fan of zoos, my highlight there should be a panda, but unfortunately panda died a while ago, what we found out after more than 30 min of ride there. Golf carts were pretty cool. It was 1,5 hour trip for us, otters and hippos were fun to watch.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 December 2023
- Loopy_Bow88Berkeley Vale, Australia31 contributionsAverage zoo that needs work but still a cool experienceWhat is open in the zoo is pretty cool but there is way too many things under renovation or just closed to give a rating any higher. We purchased the hop on hop off ticket for the zoo buses which helped with how spread out the zoo is and the up hill areas although we still had to back track a lot to see exhibits we had driven past as the stops were in frequent and at times not were you would want them. What was even more annoying was that we walked to exhibits just to find out they were empty and derelict but there was no signage pointing this out. Yes the Panda is no longer there, the aquarium was closed, the waterpark was closed, both white tiger and normal tigers are no longer there, many of the food and beveridge places were closed for renovation and some interactive buildings were also closed. Some of the animals looked like they needed more love and care as I wouldn’t have described them as healthy and happy, and some of the exhibits were barely fit to keep the animals in let alone let them thrive. We are comparing this to zoos in Australia so maybe our standards are just high, I would have to admit the state of the zoo isn’t too bad if compared to buildings in Thailand but I would also say the state of buildings isn’t great when compared to Australian standards. On the plus side we got to see a lot of cool animals we hadn’t seen before and some cool experiences like we got to feed the giraffes, elephants and hippos for 20 baht each which the kids lovedVisited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 2 January 2024
- DerHenniHaan, Germany759 contributionsNo PandaThe zoo is very extensive, you'll walk a lot, while most of the compounds look not too modern and species-appropiate. Besides that theres no info about no Panda being here, while the zoo advertises with them and the aquarium is closed, also without prior info at the entrance. The zoo itself isn't bad, but I wouldn't go here a second time.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 February 2024
- NickGiGermany178 contributionsNot sure I would go again unless so more investment was put into the zooI’m going to have to write a disappointing review. The zoo is definitely in need of financial support. So don’t be put off from going there if you just put your expectations back a bit. It’s a nice place to visit, the animals are nice but I think some could be more attended to. The zoo looks a little run down but that is my subjective.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 March 2024

Don’t be fooled by the 150 baht entry fee, they’ll try to charge you for everything else as well once you get in. If you want to see the pandas it’s more money, the same with the aquarium, which is fine, but they aren’t anything special. I can see why a lot of people pay to get the zoo tram or the golf buggy but you don’t get to see a lot of the park doing this, so it’s 100% better to just walk and spend more time seeing the animals. Saying this, I was a bit worried once I saw some of the conditions the animals were in, 90% of them were on their own (no second animal) which meant they all looked depressed and even some of them I’m convinced looked like they’d been sedated at some point as they all looked drowsy. Overall I’d say the animals are treated how you’d expect them to be for equivalent to around £3 entry. Would not go back again and I recommend nobody supports this treatment either, we wish we’d never gone, it’s just upsetting to see beautiful animals treated in this way. If I could give this place a zero I would.

Stumbled on the back entrance of the Zoo hiking down from Pha Lat temple and figured, why not take a look. The entrance price was reasonable but expect to pay extra for the aquarium and panda enclosures, as well as the tram that can take you around the Zoo. Unfortunately, the zoo is pretty run down and some animal enclosures are not well taken care of. Ostriches were missing a lot of plumage, tiger looked skinny to me, and like a lot of zoos, not enough space for the wild cats and larger animals. We decided to leave early as it made us sad for the animals to stay longer.

Chiang Mai Zoo is only $7.50 AUD. It’s a a bit hilly to walk but we navigated easily with a pram carrying our almost two year old. There are extra costs for other attractions like the aquarium and panda house which keeps the cost low for those who just want to see animals. The enclosures are clean and decent. It’s a zoo, not the Sahara desert so the aminals are caged not roaming free, they appear well cared for and healthy. Lots of babies so healthy enough to breed. For $1 you can buy fruit, grass and veg to feed the elephants, giraffes and hippos.
I suggest that you walk the trail in reverse, get the hills out of the way then finish nearby the waterpark. We paid $4 for all three of us to splash in the water park. The cost for a transfer via tuk tuk was around $5 in each direction, drinks and snacks are the same price at 7/11s we got three drinks and an ice cream for $4. Total for the day was $33 for two adults and a toddler. Night safari zoo would have been around $100 or more for food too with animals made to perform tricks.

I am extremely ethical about Zoos and usually I will review the Zoo's I visit negatively however this Zoo is amazing.
It took me more than 6 hours to just walk around and see everything!
All animals are very well looked after and enclosures are large, spacious and clean.
You can combine a ticket for Zoo and Aquarium but the Panda enclosure is an extra seperate ticket.
I was a little concerned that the elephant was on his/her own as was the Panda as I know they are social animals.
Other than that, please check it out as they use the funds to keep this beautiful Zoo going.
Very impressive indeed. You can feed the Giraffes and even the Hippos if you dare!

We had an incredible time here ! We rode down on peds and parked in the underground section which was 20baht. entrance was about 300baht each for the whole day it does cost extra to see the panda... Also extra for the aquarium but definitely worth it, all in all about 500baht like 15eurosish. we did take our own lunch and just grabbed little bits from the shops along the way e.g water, coffee nibbles.. You can pay to feed the goats like 20-50baht.. There is car tours.. But we really enjoyed walking and taking our time taking pictures theres lots of little sitting spots to have a rest and drink some water as some parts are up hill.. Some parts do have tree coverage but i would recommend using suncream.. Theres a good few kms of walking so after we where exhausted! fantastic day! Really good value for money and theres ALOT of animals you can really get close upto even bottle feed the koi karp outside the aquarium which is an experience 😁

We went to the zoo today, and we were dissapointed, and even felt scammed. Entry ticket is 100B, but to get around by vehicle (quite long distance to walk between each animals) you have to pay extra, to see pandas - paid extra... We think that more expensive entry fee with everything included would be much more fair.
The ZOO looks old, many buildings are not used. It’s good times are gone long in time. Little bit ruined, and some places looks abandoned. Not very much animals to see. Pandas are the only worthy thing to see, but you have to pay 100B extra to enter... We didn’t like that.
The only good thing is that most of animals (at least the one we’ve seen) looked healthy and in good condition.
Definitely look for other activity in Chaing Mai.

I previously visited this zoo nearly 10 years ago when I actually worked in the zoo industry myself. Back then I was pleasantly surprised by the standard of enclosures and efforts to engage visitors. I am a zoologist now living in Thailand and had planned to take my children to China to see Pandas, COVID made this impossible and as were previously impressed with this place it was high on our list during a road trip of northern Thailand. Despite having worked in zoos I often question the role they play and this one actually angered me. In comparison to a decade ago - it is very poorly maintained, many exhibits are closed and signage is poor. We got off at the aquarium stop and the whole thing was closed, the monorail no longer operational, the water park out of action. I appreciate COVID has hit the zoo industry hard but many of these things seemed to have been out of action even longer. What angered me though was whilst my children were captivated by the panda and asking lots of really good questions (even I was surprised by how much interest they had) we were asked to leave as our time was up!!!! I was so surprised (we had only been there 20 minutes)- had it been packed I would have understood (we were the only four people in there!). Had they been being noisy I would completely get it (I would have escorted them out myself). The Thai lady (in a guards uniform which also seems a little unnecessary) was adamant and escorted us out. I brought my children to inspire them about this incredible species and ended up having to tell a four year old that he was not allowed to look at the panda anymore.
I never normally leave reviews but I am so angered that places like this mean people condemn all zoos when some are really working hard to inspire people and fund conservation in the wild.

Great zoological facility, a lot of good infrastructure. Staff cordial & pleasant. Beautiful natural hillside setting beside Chiang Mai University Campus, lots of native flora & native bird life on grounds. Ample food/drink vending areas and clean toilet facilities. Very few visitors mid week as of March 2021, locals and some national tourists, like an Issan school group. Great opportunity to avoid crowds and view animals in peace.
Be advised that Zoo is currently undergoing renovations and many animals are on vacation until their new digs are done, no pandas for example right now. I would say end of 2021 for most renos to complete.
Fabulous Humbolt penguin house, penguins have roomy double sea side natural looking pen, birds display tons of vitality and interact with you while swimming, they are curious by nature. Keeper was feeding them enormous portions of raw whole fish which they gulped down with gusto.
Only cats on duty as of March 2021 are 3 large white lionesses. Very beautiful, enormous cats in excellent health displaying contented lion behaviour in their ample moated habitat (moat is good to have, these gals gaze back at you while you look at them). New cat facilities under construction now for rest of cat specimens.
Other animal species of note in their habitat zones right now; pygmy hippo, Capybaras, juvenile barbary sheep, an Asian rhinoceros, multiple species of giant hornbills, guinea game fowl (wild chickens, hey they are slightly different from domestic fowl), RED PANDA, koalas, plains zebras, assorted African deer ungulate species.
Asiatic bears have a great habitat too, one small bear & 2 quite large bears, all of them interact with visitors from afar and display everyday asiatic bear behaviour just like on Animal Planet.
We'll certainly visit again once renos are complete!

Chiang Mai Zoo used to allow you to drive your car around. But.... Now you can't. You have to herd onto busses with no social distancing or pay to hire a golf cart - we left our number to be called when one was available and never got a call!
The aquarium is closed - nobody told us when we entered the zoo - and many other exhibits were also closed.
What used to be a great place to visit was a huge disappointment.

Chiang Mai Zoo is huge and thankfully there a hop on/hop off shuttle tram you can take with 10 mins intervals. We loved so see such a big variety of Animals and the Aquarium. Spent nearly 4 Hours with a 5,4 and 1 year old in the Zoo. Everyone loved it.

What animals can you feed? and is this all day for each or does each animal have specific times - if so, is there somewhere I can find a list of these times
