- Let D1 contributionAbsolutely amazing experienceAfter searching high and low we found a really good value elephant sanctuary which included transfers, interaction and feeding the elephants and getting in the river and bathing with the elephants. Tom our guide was absolutely amazing, we had such a fun day out was a very surreal feeling. Tom was very patient and encouraging to my 8 year old son who was very nervous and apprehensive, he was continuously making him feel at ease and my son began to love the experience and felt confident enough to touch and feed the elephants. I had so many questions about the elephants and Tom was so knowledgeable and answered all of them. The elephants here are so loved and cared for and treated with such respect. Tom was always there to take pictures for us on our own phones I didn’t even have to ask, I really liked this as no extra costs were expected but because he was so epic we gave a tip anyway. Tom is an asset to your team and a brilliant tour guide. Highly enjoyable experience thanks for making our holiday!Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 6 November 2023
- Colin JEastleigh, United Kingdom14 contributionsGreat afternoon and tremendous fun. One of the highlights of my visit to Thailand. An experience not to be missedI booked this trip and formed a group of 12 in a minibus which took us to the sanctuary. Great fun feeding and touching the elephants, also making up some of their food into balls. Some of the group went into the water with the elephants when it was their bath timeVisited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 14 December 2023

We feed the elephants bananas and vitamin balls which we made for them. Bathing the elephants was a fun task. The baby elephant sprayed us with water so we enjoyed a bath as well. The tour guide spoke English well and helped us take pictures and videos with the elephants. I highly recommend visiting the sanctuary. It will be a memorable experience!Visited December 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 30 December 2023
- Chris CToronto, Canada11 contributionsFantastic experienceThis was truly a once in a lifetime experience. We were up close, and very personal with these beautiful and majestic animals. It’s clear right from the beginning that you don’t go to this sanctuary for a photo op or Instagram post. Our guide, encouraged us to get our hands dirty, and become very friendly with our hosts by feeding them, making their food, walking the grounds and giving them a scrub in the pond.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 January 2024
- Zoe F5 contributionsSupport the retired elephants whilst having funIf you are looking to ride an elephant (you shouldn't be) this is not the sanctuary for you. If you want to support domesticated elephants that have come from hard working and inappropriate environments this is the sanctuary for you. The elephants appear to all be very well cared for by individual caregivers. We did a full day visit including learning about the elephants, preparing and then feeing them various foods such as sugar cane and vitamin balls, and finally washing them in the river. This was an once in a lifetime amazing experience. Great fun and something to remember! Tom (the lead guide) was inspirational in his enthusiasm and insight into caring for the retired elephants. The centre was well organised, providing a change of clothes (you may get covered in elephant snot, mud etc), towels, showers, changerooms, drinks and a good veggie lunch. We'd recommend supporting this sanctuary and the work they are doing.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 January 2024

You meet the elephants, feed them, prepare their tasty treats, and then bathe them wearing clothes provided for you. A fantastic experience and day out. Highly recommend.Dear Richard Thanks for your visited and support us. All our elephants was good takecare of by our Vet and our mahout. There are a myriad of elephant sanctuaries advertised in the Chiang Mai area. We feel fortunate we chose Kanta on our first trip to Thailand and highly recommend it. It was clear the young lady who explained the schedule to us and discussed the elephants' habits loved her job and the elephants. Wish I could remember her name but believe she was of Chinese descent. Things we considered for our family of 4:
1) searched for a half day experience as feared we would melt in the strong heat and humidity if we stayed out on the elephant range all day. Kanta offered both half and full-day options. We chose the half day, so they picked us up about 6:30am and we arrived back at our hotel around 1pm, brilliant!
2) wanted comfortable a/c transportation to and from the sanctuary as it takes 1 hour to 2 hours to get there from downtown Chiang Mai depending on traffic. If you are susceptible to heat, watch out for the sanctuaries that use songthiews, which are open air flatbed type trucks and non-a/c vehicles. Kanta picked us up in a comfortable a/c van
3) hoped to interact with the elephants in a humane manner. Tried to find an ethical sanctuary that forbid ridding (found out riding places torture the elephants, yikes!) and didn't force the elephants to perform. Kanta has only domesticated elephants who are retired from logging and those whose owners sold them after Thailand's elephant shows shut down during covid. These elephants can't be released into the wild as they've never experienced it.
Kanta was exceptionally well organized and well prepared for pampered guests unused to farm life. They slowly introduced us to the elephants and had us practice how to interact with them behind an enclosure area before we mingled with them in the fields so that we wouldn't scare them. Kanta provided us with a change of clothes, wide brimmed hats, hand washing stations, shower stations for after the river bath, etc.
We fed the elephants banana appetizers, medicine balls, etc. that were all organized for us in piles beforehand. We almost booked another sanctuary and then realized that the visitors at the other sanctuary are required to spend time chopping down sugar cane in the fields to feed the elephants-not for us.
Bring bug spray, sun screen, flipflops and a swimsuit or change of undies.
My family said this was the best thing we had done on our entire trip to Thailand. Thank you Kanta!

I've just done a afternoon half day at Kanta, on arrival my first thought was there's so many people here! I'd say there was roughly 4 groups of 10 ir more people. The guide said only some were rescue. The elephants themselves looked happy and well cared for to be fair but they had a routine on command to when to eat, bathe etc. They were commanded when to spray water through their trunks. They all had ropes around their necks and what seemed to be a metal ring attached and were "guided" to interact with us. When all the tourists left, they'd take the elephants somewhere so they're not exactly "free" to do what they want. I'd much rather the elephants have their freedom and have much smaller groups interact with them. I'm suprised there aren't more reviews like this. Disappointed.

I agonised over which elephant tour to do because I did not want to support anyone who uses and abuses them, ie riding/tricks.
I chose Kanta because of the reviews. As soon as we drove into the sanctuary I knew I had made absolutely the right choice.
The 15 elephants there are free to wander around the large fields. There is a large stream running through the fields for them.
Our guide Nine spent around 5-10 minutes talking about the elephants and how to feed them. We were then given a bag of cut sugar cane and walked to a field to feed them for around 45 minutes. Then we prepared some big protein balls for them while Nine explained about elephant diet and nutrition. We then walked with the elephants to the stream and bathed with them. This was tremendous fun.
Afterwards you could have a shower if you wanted, get a coffee or tea and some fruit or biscuits.
Useful info: there is a short toilet stop halfway into the trip to the sanctuary - toilets unbelievably clean. At the sanctuary, filtered drinking water is free and plentiful in the main building and in the field. There is a shower and toilet block in the main building and also a toilet block in the field. Exceptionally clean. You can wash your hands whenever you want. You are given a locker key on arrival for your bag which you can hang around your neck. The uniform is light and comfortable and has two deep pockets for your phone/glasses. Not much walking involved so just wear thongs or sandals. Big straw hats and towels are provided. No need for bathers, just a change of underwear if yours get wet when bathing.
Overall it was an unforgettable afternoon. Can’t recommend it highly enough. Our guide Nine was kind and informative and most importantly obviously cares about animal welfare.

This is a learning and discovery place, not a ride and tricks elephant camp. On an afternoon tour, we spent a some minutes learning the drill and changing clothes, then went to feed the elephants sugar cane, and later, long grass, and banana balls for dessert. We then spent 20-30 minutes with the elephants during their afternoon bath, and I was able to wash and scrub 5 year old Katau. The elephants are clean, well-fed and cared for, and under the management of a keeper, or mahout, who is a full-time caretaker of his charge. These are not wild elephants, but are former forest workers or their descendants. With the ending of teak and hardwood harvesting some years ago, the role of the worker elephants has been a dilemma: they are not wild and able to join the several thousand elephants still wild in Thai forests, but neither should they be performers. This camp is obviously a compromise in many ways, but it appears to be a healthy one for the big creatures.
In short, it was a thoroughly enjoyable (and wet) afternoon with these magnificent animals in a relaxed and positive atmosphere.

There are about 10-15 Elephant experience tours in Chaing Mai, so it is tough to choose. So glad we chose this Kant’s outfit. Professionally run, and in a beautiful setting with wonderful elephants. Just a great half day I was looking forward to, and Kanta was so good at the difficult task of engaging the animals with us.

Animal welfare organisations make clear that the most ethical elephant encounters are ‘hands off’, because any interaction with humans means the animals have to be controlled and trained to perform unnatural behaviour for the entertainment of tourists. This place is not hands off. It involves feeding, washing and posing with elephants.
The staff appear to generally treat the elephants humanely: they don’t (from what I saw) use whips, sticks or bull hooks and don’t allow elephant rides. However, the elephants are not free to roam, behave, and socialize as they want. They are pushed/pulled to go into the water (even if some appear not to want to) for bathing and to pose for group photos and selfies. Some of the elephant have been trained to spray water on the visitors for a photo op.
While the sanctuary may overall be doing good in caring for mistreated animals, there are more ethical places to visit and support that do a lot more than just not offering riding: Elephant Nature Park; Burm & Emily’s Elephant Sanctuary; Chang Chill; or Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary. Make sure to book these in advance because they can fill up quickly! As a tourist, you vote with your dollars on how you want elephants to be treated.

We did the half day tour and it was excellent.
We got picked up on time and were quickly on our way to see the elephants. The group wasn't too large for how many elephants. You do get changed into a outfit and you are quickly on to feeding the elephants, before making these fat balls for them.
You also get to go into the water to wash the animals. There are showers to clean off afterwards and the elephants are clearly very well looked after. A fab day

100% recommend!! We had a great half day tour with very knowledgable and friendly guide Woody. It was incredible to be able to interact with the elephants and to learn so much about their diet, medicine, and rehabilitation after being rescued from camps. Washing the elephants in the waterhole was the best activity!
PS The journey to and from is more like 45 mins so not long at all and well worth it to spend time with the elephants! If you are going around this time of the year wear a sweater in the morning as it can be a little chilly.

We were a bit overwhelmed with all the possible elephant sanctuary options, but decided to go with this one & we weren't disappointed. We did the whole day & it was good that it felt quite leisurely, we weren't rushed with the animals at any point & could just wander at will. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable & we felt all the staff genuinely had a love for the elephants & showed them care, rather than just trying to get them to behave in certain ways for the tourists. We really felt we got to be in amongst the elephants in their own environment & meet their needs rather than they ours. We fed them several times, made food for them & bathed with them - the last bit was our favourite part & it was good we had staff in with us who made sure a thorough job was done when we missed bits! The uniforms they provided were also a lovely touch & saved us from getting our own clothes muddy! We hadn't realised at the start but it might be helpful to know they have their own photographers that follow the group round all day which allows them to get some lovely shots which we weren't able to ourselves... It was quite pricey to buy the pictures at the end but we decided to treat ourselves with them as they were so nice & it's good to have something extra to remember it all by (plus I'm hoping the extra money helps to go towards the elephant's care)

We did the morning half day tour with Taz and it was an unforgettable experience. They picked us up from our hotel 7 am along with a few other groups and then we took the 1 hour ride up to the sanctuary. From there we were given a uniform to wear over our swimwear to help the elephants identify us. Taz explained everything about the elephants and the “rules” and then we were off to feed them. This was such an amazing experience to get up close and personal with these creatures. They are so friendly and at no times do you feel scared. After feeding we had the opportunity to bath with the elephants which was so cool to see them just lay in the water and get scrubbed and bathed. We finished with a group photo. Taz will take photos with his camera, but there is also the opportunity to purchase professional photos which we did. They let you take as many of your own pictures as well. The facilities were nice and clean, you can shower after the bath with the elephants and change. They finish the day with a snack before dropping you back off at your hotel. What an amazing experience and the staff is even better. We will never forget this! Highly recommend!!

Hmmm
Well if you are able to get in and out of the truck and you are ok with not going in and touching the elephants and just watching from the fence....
They are very friendly and may help you get in and out....but there are no specific ramps made for that.
Sorry

Hope this helps.

I saw photos and looked like people are all wearing the same shirt, is it optional to wear? Or do you have to wear the uniform they give you
Written 8 February 2019
I am not sure if mandatory but I have been told it’s because it helps the elephants feel relaxed as they will be used to seeing the sane uniform :-)
