About
Songkran is Thailand's most important public holiday and celebrates their traditional new year. The backpacking favourite Khao San Road and neighbouring Rambutree become one of the country's biggest tourist havens to celebrate the water festival, with a carnival atmosphere and a wonderful mix of Thai tradition and fun travelling spirit. Decoratively painted elephants walk the streets, children throw ice-cold buckets of water at policemen and if you are on the streets, you are fair game for a soaking. Those arriving with bags, be warned that no one gets let off. It takes place from the 13th to 15th of April (all over the country), everyone armed with giant water guns and their Hawaiian-style floral 'Song Kran Shirts'. The traditional water pouring is meant as a symbol of washing away sins.

Having experienced the vibrant and lively atmosphere of Khao San Road during the Songkran Festival, I can confidently say it's an experience like no other. The entire street transforms into a water-filled playground, where locals and tourists alike come together to celebrate the Thai New Year with water fights, traditional ceremonies, and endless festivities.

The energy on Khao San Road during Songkran is infectious, with music blasting from every corner, colorful water guns spraying in all directions, and people dancing and laughing in the streets. It's a true celebration of unity and joy, where cultural traditions blend seamlessly with modern revelry.

One of the most memorable aspects of the festival is the sense of camaraderie among participants. Strangers become friends as they engage in friendly water battles, sharing laughs and good vibes throughout the day. It's a time when everyone, regardless of background or nationality, comes together to embrace the spirit of Songkran.

Of course, no review of the Songkran Festival on Khao San Road would be complete without mentioning the delicious street food stalls lining the street. From traditional Thai dishes to international favorites, there's something to satisfy every craving as you take a break from the water festivities.

Overall, the Songkran Festival on Khao San Road is an unforgettable celebration that embodies the essence of Thai culture – vibrant, joyous, and full of life. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, experiencing Songkran on Khao San Road is an absolute must."

Too many people and too small of an area we celebrated the day before in Phuket and it was much better experience. You could not even get to Khao San Road because there were too many people. Ended up going back to the hotel early.

We were in Thailand for a 500 klm in 5 days charity push bike ride to raise $$ for the kids in the Hands Across the Water orphanages. Before we got going we ( as a large group) went to Khao San Rd and let loose. - THE BEST FUN I have had in many years and not one person got angry ( which would end in a fight in most other countries)

My Songkran started in Phuket on Bangla rd, flew up to Bangkok April 13th and got checked in to my hotel, and then it started. First went to Robertson’s in Bang Rak and got a big water gun, bought some beer and sat in the steps having water fight with all the children. By 7pm I was having water fights from my Tuk Tuk until I got to Khao San. A lot of people but a lot of fun, with 8 hours of water fights.

songkran
this was never on my bucket list but it should’ve been! such a great experience and the best way to interact with thai locals. everyone basically soaks each other with waterguns or buckets. doesn’t matter who you are, you’ll get soaked this weekend.

the most popular area in BK is Koh San Road where they sell water guns for 400 baht. to refill the guns is about 5 baht each time.

it’s also really fun shooting people who are smoking cigarettes haha.

highly recommend wearing something not see through when it’s wet. also bring a case to protect your phone ! ziplock bags are also helpful!

You can spend the whole day here, walk around, drink, spray anyone you want (even saw some spray the police and they were cool with it). Everyone is in a crazy joyous mood. There’s music blasting, people dancing, drinking and having one massive street party. Water refills are 5baht for your water gun, a water gun costs anywhere up to 400baht to buy depending on which one u want. This should be on everyone’s bucket list. A child’s water fight dream. Remember to bring a case to put ur phone in to keep it dry!

First time for me that I go an event like this and I really enjoyed. We went to celebrate the water war to Si Lom and it was awesome full of local people and some tourists. You can refill your watergun for 5-10 baths. Everybody is happy celebrating! Definitely a must do in Bangkok
