We did Maliwan’s cooking class today and it was amazing! What a great experience to do while in Thailand. The first part of the class was going to the market and that was just incredible. We learned so much and had great fun. We cooked 3 entrees and 1 dessert dish...soooo good! This was a definite highlight of the trip. It is a very well organized tour and very happy we did this one.

I was able to book a cooking class in Bangkok. When I say this was the best EVER!!!! The instructor Ms. Mae was totally awesome. Her place was a little difficult to find but I appreciate that we went into her community to be amongst her people. Leave in plenty of time to ensure that of you get lost you will still be on-time. We went to the wet market, via Tuk Tuk, and picked up all of our ingredients. I suggest that you do not wear open toe shoes. It’s a wet market with water on the ground due to the seafood and fresh meat. This was so much fun. She provided us with insight on meats, vegetables and products. Everyone knows her because she has 2 classes a day so she’s there twice a day. She’s like a local celebrity. I enjoyed getting the fresh products from the locals. We went back and started the cooking class. How wonderful was this. She is awesome. We did 4 meals (chicken green curry, Thai shrimp soup, shrimp pad Thai, vegetable Thai stir fry). It was sooooo good. At the end, we were able to sit down with the other group and eat our food and we got a certificate of completion!!! Love her place because it is set up like an industrial kitchen. Try it, you won’t be disappointed!!!

My daughter (college age) and I went to Maliwan Thai Cooking in July and enjoyed the class. Mae was very knowledgeable and nice. The other class participants were great! There was a couple from Germany, a guy from France, and a Canadian family with three grade school kids who had been living in Australia for the past couple of years and returning back to Canada. We all enjoyed the class and the dishes we made.
Five stars for Mae and the cooking class and her staff! We booked the morning class which includes a market tour. After arriving at the cooking school, Mae led us out and got several tuk tuks for a short ride to the market. The morning market tour was interesting with all the various spices, produce, noodles, fish, chicken, meats, etc. Mae purchased some ingredients for the class, including freshly grated coconut.
For our class, we made curry paste for our chicken green curry, shrimp pad thai, tom yum soup and mango sticky rice. Mae also showed us how to make coconut cream and coconut milk for the mango sticky rice from the fresh coconut she purchased.
Yes, to get to the cooking school you are walking through some old alleys and building. However, the cooking school and everything inside was very clean. There was air conditioning inside the school, including the cooking area, which is greatly appreciated!
Cleanliness and sanitation practices were very good, such as keeping the cooking stations clean, constant hand washing and proper storage/refrigeration of perishable foods. Each student is assigned a colored clip to keep track as each dish is made; you put your color clip on your plate/bowl, so you know what's your dish when they bring it upstairs to the dining/eating area!
The directions to Maliwan (on their website) are clear and easily found on google maps. However our taxi driver tried to scam us, even though our hotel told him exactly where to go and gave him the directions and printed map. He would call someone on his cell phone, sounded like he was asking for directions (probably trying to increase the time/distance), even though I showed him my cell phone with our location on google maps.
Then he overshot the location, called someone again even though I showed him my phone with the google map clearly showing our location just a block away. We probably should have just bailed out of the cab at that point and paid him what was on the meter.
When he pulled up to where he should have originally dropped us off, he tried to charge more than the meter because he said he had to call and use his phone. I argued with him that it was supposed to be the meter and just gave him a little more although I should have just paid the meter price. It was his loss for trying to scam us because if he hadn't played the trick of overshooting the location and trying to charge us for having to call for directions, I would have given him more with a tip.
Once out of the cab, we used my phone and google maps to find the building but many of the local vendors were very friendly and asked "cooking school?" and pointed the way for us to go.
When the class was over and we tried to catch a cab back towards Ploen Chit BTS, several cabs stopped but the drivers said "no" when we asked to go to Ploen Chit. Mae came out with the afternoon class and we told her we were having trouble trying to get a cab, so she was very helpful and suggested asking the cab to drop us at Ratchatewi BTS and helped us hail a cab and spoke with the driver for us, so we were able to get back. This cab driver was nice, used the meter and did not try anything.
Maliwan Thai Cooking class is good. Also, I've taken the Cooking with Poo class and enjoyed that class too. So I would recommend taking either Maliwan or Cooking with Poo if you're interested in a Thai cooking class, depending on where you're staying in Bangkok. If you're in the city area with easy access to the BTS, take the Cooking with Poo. If you're staying more in the Khaosan or Chao Phraya River area with boat access, Maliwan would probably be more convenient.
So we enjoyed our class and Mae is really nice, helpful, and a good teacher. Highly recommend Maliwan Thai Cooking class!

We booked this class for the family (we are 5) some time before going.
We left the hotel an hour before the class and gave the taxi the instructions and the address the school sended. There were not clear as the taxi got lost several times. That is why we arrived 20mins late and the teacher and the other person they had (only 1 more) were alredy in the market.
A woman in the school gave me a phone in order to talk to the teacher, who told us to wait in the class instead of inviting us to joing them in the market. The way she taked was unpolite and that is why we decided to leave and not taking the class.
Some days later we did a cooking course with another school who was much for caring and proffesional. The instructions where clear, they advise us where to go and what to do if we arrive late and gave us the way to go to the class from our hotel. The communication via mail was super easy and they ask us to confirm the day before to make sure. None of things are made by Maliwan Thai cooking school.
Some suggestions:
1)give better instructions.
2)If you are going to leave to the market if someone arrives a little late advise it in a mail before taking the class.
3) More flexibility. We are tourist, we have no idea how is the traffic or where the place is, so if we arrive late it would be nice to give us the chance to go to the market. Offerd a tuk tuk or something like that. We pay a a lot of money (we were 5!) for the whole experience, including the market.
In conclusion, this is why is would not reccomend this cooking class.

Dear Inés D,
Thank you for your review and for bringing this issue to our attention. I am deeply sorry that you had an unpleasant experience with us.
Regarding the direction, we believe that the instruction is clear. The map shows the area for the taxi. The confirmation email has clearly described more in details that our entrance is at the back not in the front. If the taxi manages to drop you anywhere in this area. You should be able to find us in about 10 minutes.
However, please do not expect any taxi drivers to know every spot in Bangkok. If the drivers are new or drive from one area to another, they may not know every single street.
Anyway, we understand that the traffic in Bangkok is hardly predictable. We always wait for 10 minutes after its scheduled start time to allow the late customers to go to the market. This is the maximum that we could do.
We believe that we are quite flexible. There is another customer joined in the class who arrived on time just a little bit before 09:00 and has been waiting with patient for the next 10 minutes before leaving into the market. At that time, we did not have any idea where were your group and how long will your group take. Furthermore, we believe that it is very unpleasant for someone who manage to be on time and have to lose their time to wait for someone else.
The instructor was unable to invite you to join the market trip. This is because the market is in another neighborhood that we need to ride a Tuk Tuk (not in walking distance). This is not possible at all that your group can find the instructor in the market without getting lost. The market is quite large, busy and crowded. The local hardly speak any English. If we were able to manage any tuk tuk to bring you to the market to catch up which will take you another 10 minutes, the instructor and other customers will need to stop walking and wait at the market for your group to join in to make sure that you can find us. In which may cause the others to feel unenjoyable to keep waiting in the market under the hot weather.
At Maliwan, our customers are not required to re-confirm the booking as we trust that our customers will show up or make a cancellation when they change their mind. If you have special requirement regarding the direction from your hotel to our class, you are always welcome to write us an email or ask your hotel to call us that you need help. However, there is a none request from you. Our staff is willing to assist you to help you plan ahead for the direction.
Lastly, thank you very much for your suggestions. I am deeply sorry once again that we have let you down and not being able to meet up your expectations. However, we hope to be able to provide our service to you next time when you visit Bangkok. If you have additional information to share, please feel free to reach out to me directly at cs@maliwancooking.com.
Kind regards,
Kanda Jintapaisarn

I chose the Mistique Thai afternoon class. We were a group of 6, the market visit was an absolute gift of smells, colours and knowledge all with Mae's kind and expert guidance. The class is intense, instructions clear, and the recipes all delicious. As an italian cook, I love food, and really appreciate the importance of ingredients choice (without the class I would have no idea about how to choose..).An absolute recommendation.

Mae was amazing. We did the pad Thai/green curry chicken/coconut mango sticky rice/Tom Yum Goong class. Love all those things, and I have to admit--with her guidance the two of us did FANTASTIC! Very tasty, good restaurant quality! The market visit was amazing also. I don't usually use this many superlatives in a review, but the class was great. Lots of time-savers too, she had helpers doing things like shredding fresh coconut for us after we gave it a go. Good thing too, that takes time! Although the taste between fresh, homemade coconut milk and canned is HUGE, so we might actually have to do the fresh thing at home sometime. They also took pictures & put them up on a private link afterwards. **We also went during the height of Songkran, and that was fun, although we got drenched on the way to the market & back. Bring extra clothes in a dry bag! and COME HUNGRY--we did & still couldn't eat it all. Great value for the money.

Hello Gina,
Thank you so much for your lovely review. Really glad to read what you think about us and know that you had such a great time as well as enjoy your moment with us. To me, it was fun getting so wet and covered with powder on the Songkran’s day with both of you. I will also need to spare some extra clothes at the class ;) Anyway, glad to hear from you and looking forward to cooking with both of you again in the future.
Best wishes,
Mae (on behalf of Maliwan Jintawijit)

We were on our honeymoon and wanted to learn some authentic Thai dishes to take home with us. I found the Maliwan cooking school online before we left. Booking online was easy. The class was great! The teachers were great in explaining all of the ingredients and generally being helpful and friendly. We had a great time and were so pleased to get an email after we had left with some photo's of us. A would highly recommend if you are in Bangkok!

We picked this course based on the location as it was central and near Khao San Road. We really enjoyed the market, the instructor was really happy to answer any questions we had and explained all of the different kinds of produce. The course was well paced and ran very smoothly. Her food was delicious and we were really pleased with the food that we made!

What a wonderfully fun, informative and delicious experience!
The market visit was a delight for the senses and we learnt a lot about the ingredients.
The class was really enjoyable too and taught very well... and the food, wow! I can’t believe we made that! It was amongst some of the best food we’ve eaten in Bangkok thus far!
Mae is an excellent and passionate teacher, making everything easy to follow. She is patient and willing to answer any questions.
The whole experience was extremely well organised and the place is clean and tidy. We were given all the recipes to take back with us too.
A huge thank you to Mae and Ja for making this such a special memorable experience for us and one we will treasure forever. We can now confidently make and enjoy the dishes we made when we get back home.
Highly recommended!!
