I absolutely loved the thamel area, great for souviner shopping, with a hippie edge. Some stall have set prices other need to barter to get a good price, which is all part of the experience

Loved it! Great shops, restaurants and bars. Safe. Easy to navigate. La Baguette for the best coffee in the area. Quality espresso drinks and bakery on site. I went everyday for the fresh Himalayan coffee. They also sell it by the pound to bring home!!

An exciting and must visit place. Local folks are nice and simple people, don't appear aggressive or threatening as other developing countries. Lots of stores selling religious and cultural trinkets, paintings, shawls, trekking stuff etc. Must bargain as very competitive and every other shops sells similar things. You can spend all day (and night!) window shopping.

Definitely a safe little area for tourists and would have taken my teenagers to this section, patrolled and secured by police. Looking for Souvenirs - yak and cashmere wool shops full of scarf wraps blankets, variety of SInging Bowls but go off the main streets as better quality and prices Looking for Mountain gear - variety of quality so ask... This place is known as hippy town among many tourists and locals. I bought handmade goods and handicrafts such as silver, copper, wooden statues, jewellery, etc. Pashmina, thanka, restaurants, hotels, cafés and temples were everywhere in this area. Traffic was a bit crazy as usual but didn't notice any accident. It's business as usually as any other old city areas... More

We stayed in thamel on our first and last night of our Mt.Everest tour. As far as Kathmandu goes it's pretty rough. Thamel is set up for tourists and has all the shopping. My friend and I bought pashminas and cashmere blankets for a lot more reasonable prices than I thought were possible to get, so we were very pleased.... More

One of the main reasons I came to Nepal is for the beautiful silk embroidered accessories the people produce and I was in heaven shopping the alleys of Thamel-it was awesome! But it was also very dirty dusty and polluted. I smelled human feces in places so that took away from some of the ambience obviously.

This is a very safe but vibrant area of Kathmandu...full of shops, restaurants, bars and tourists! Be prepared to deal with the congested narrow streets and sidewalk vendors...but enjoy the atmosphere!
