In January 2017, I attended a 10 day English-language Mindfulness Retreat at the lovely, serene hilltop Kopan Monastery. Our class of over 70 students were from 29 countries and the Mahayana Buddhist nun who was our teacher is from Brisbane, Australia. The vegetarian meals were tasty, healthful and abundant. Eating mindfully, in silence, adds to the delight of this experience.... More

The monastery is located on the hills that surround Kathmandu, away from the pollution and overcrowding of the city. You can visit the amazing garden inside the monastry area, with a couple of really beautiful stupas. You can sit there and take a moment of relax, the atmosphere of this place is really peaceful, otherwise you can take a look... More

it is located on a hill. where the air is clean and of course the location in opposite to other parts of Kathmandu. You can find lots of foreigns there as they learn or discover the buddhism.

The walk up to Kopan is quite interesting as you pass through outer Kathmandu suburbs. We went on a weekend only to find the monastery is closed. Also other sections are closed long term due to continued rebuilding post the 2015 earthquake.
