I went up to the monastery after my trek to enjoy some quiet time. Unfortunately, it was a cloudy day so sitting in the lovely gardens wasn't an option. However, it would normally be a nice place to look out over Kathmandu and sit and reflect. If you have any interest in Buddhism then the library is a must and... More

Close of Boudhnath and can be visited by either a walk or a cab. It also offers some great views of the city.

As many reviewers note, Kopan is situated on a hilltop outside of Boudha and Kathmandu, and the views of the valley from it are spectacular. It can be reached by walking or taxi from Boudha. The reason the grounds were closed to recent visitors is because of the annual "November Course" so call ahead and make sure that the monastery... More

It is possible to reach the monastery by hiking up the walking path or hiring a taxi to drive up the narrow road. The monastery was closed to visitors but was a great location to see Kathmandu from the garden area with a stupa. There is a bookstore with a good selection of literature on Buddhism.

I've done the 10 days intro to Buddhism in October and this was an absolute life-changing experience. I went to deepen my shaky practice of meditation and try to better control my emotions, but I took away a lot more than this. The teachings were fascinating, and encouraged me to read much more about Buddhism and modern science (there are... More

Kopan Monastery is closed until mid- December 2016. Peering through the gates it looks as if it will be a very interesting site to visit. Great overall views of Kathmandu. Save the taxi fare!

I walked to Kopan Monastery from the Boudhanath area and the hike up the mountain was quite enjoyable. Kopan overlooks the city of Kathmandu and has a casual setting where visitors can wander around the site. There's a large community of monks & dharma students practicing or learning Buddhism, however everyone carries on with their daily activities. There are specific... More
