The architecture of basantapur is very historic and finely crafted. The place has old woody fragrance and can see lots of pigeons and monkey. The tea of different species and herbs are really fashion. Its not clean all the time and doesn't require any tickets.

My trip to Basanthpur was fun because I was following my Lonely Planet guide. But the guides there are agressive, rude, and persistent. One kept following me around till i had to warn him, that if he didnt back off I will complain to the police!

I mean it's nice, but its too touristy with many touts around trying to get you to pay an obnoxious entrance fee which you can easily avoid by walking round the local streets to get in at the back. I would say the local streets were more interesting.

The square as you walk in is huge and breathtaking. The various points of interest around the area are fun and interesting to explore. We especially enjoyed the pottery square where you see local artists making pottery. There are also a couple of thankha painting schools which are great to visit. We visited during the Teej festival and there were women in beautiful red sarees dancing around the area. The shopping was fun too, with better quality and better prices (after bargaining down)

Hike a minute down old Jochen for a great view of the tower. Close-up, marvel at the magnificent wood-carved doors, windows and balconies.

I don't know if you can go into this tower or not, but I was amazed anyway because of all the hand carved wood work around the outside.
