If you don't know already, Archery is not only the most popular sport in Bhutan but it is also designated as the National Sport in Bhutan. So our small tour group itinerary would not be complete without visiting the Changlimithang Archery Grounds and watching an Archery competition.
As can be seen from the photos, the bows that are being used by the Archers here are not "toy" bows and arrows - they are using expensive, high-tech carbon fiber equipment for serious competition. The "target" that the Archers are shooting at is a small paper target that is so far down field that all I can see is a tiny white "spot" downfield - see photo of the target. It seems almost impossible for anyone to hit this target that is so small and far away - but we actually saw the target being hit by at least one Archer!
Very worthwhile and interesting visit to the Archery Grounds.

Worth a short stop if visiting Thimphu. Archery is the national sport taken very seriously. As other visitors have commented the targets are amazingly over 100 metres away from the shooting stand..which they hit regularly..difficult to even see the target let along hit the target circles. You are free to watch locals practice and compete.

I was fortunate to see an archery competition using traditional wooden bows and arrows. Catch one if you can as it’s a great spectacle, especially if someone hits the target, which is some distance away, because the opposition performs a special song and dance.

I reckon these guys would plit a pea at 100 metres!
The markmanship is outstanding!
The target is dinner plate size at 150 metres... and not only do they hit it, but get bulls eyes too!!!
When a bulls eye is hit, the archers carry out a song and dance around the target.
NOT to be missed!

One of the best place to witness a game of traditional and modern archery. Which is a national sport of Bhutan. If you want to take some good picture of archery match then this is one of the best place to be.
Almost all the time there is a tournament being played.

We’ve only tried archery once (a series of lessons in the UK) but asked to go here in recognition of it being the national sport - (we have no interest in soccer but I must say it is a pretty unique stadium!).
It was very impressive to see a small competition going on - amazingly they loose their arrows over a distance of 145 metres at a tiny target!

I am an archer myself and have wanted to see how it is done in the country where archery is a national sport (only country in the world). It is fun to watch them shoot arrows, singing and dancing when the arrow hits the target. The archery shop here has some home made bows and arrows and is fun to explore. Would have loved to shoot myself but have not found a place in Bhutan to do that. Maybe next time.

The stadium is amazing, we’re we lucky enough to watch a soccer game there. The archery is not so great I’m not really sure why all tours stop here.

near with Centenary Famers market so that ok to take walk to here. i request the guide to visit but he took me to here for watching Archery that is no good as the local people just wear general clothing also using non-traditional bow. and the skill look like not so good as most of them miss the target but this is my first time to visit Archery in Bhutan. that is still ok.
i don't know what time would have traditional bow & clothing, maybe morning time. i don't know. however,i have watched it again in Paro that the place is bigger & getting traditional wearing + Bow and arrow that much better

I will be visiting the city October 29-30th. Will there be archery competitions going on during that time? How can I see the sport?
Thank you

I don't know, because their competition schedules are not online. We asked our guide to bring us to a competition if the time fits and maybe you can do the same. It is well worth spending some time to watch one!
