It was constructed in 1974 to honour the third king of Bhutan by the king’s mother. Well worth a visit when in Thimpu.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 October 2023

Very serene place despite being a popular attraction in Thimphu. It can get a little crowded on weekends and public holidays. Still you can get good views and capture photos from all angles. The surrounding hills and lush greenery of the garden contrast well with the white-washed chorten.Visited May 2023Travelled on businessWritten 23 November 2023

Is a good time to experience turning the prayer wheel and then following the locals, old and young, to walk clockwise around the beautiful white Stupas.
The feeling is so peaceful and understands that the walk is like gaining merits and enlightenment. You shouldn't miss this!

It’s always so calming and uplifting to see the spiritual community in harmony.
I love visiting the Thimphu Memorial Chorten. I am filled with a sense of peace and tranquility when I am surrounded by its beautiful, colorful architecture and surrounded by the smell of incense in the air. Every time I visit, I make sure to make a circuit around the main stupa and say a prayer. I always take a moment to appreciate the amazing detail of the structure and its various statues and murals that illustrate Buddhism and its teachings. Spending time at the Thimphu Memorial Chorten is always a very spiritual and enriching experience for me.

Part of the reason I enjoyed visiting the Memorial Chorten in Thimpu was the population of elderly Bhutanese Settled in for a day of prayer and atonement. I felt very much “a part of” as I turned the prayer wheels between elderly women squatting with their baskets and blankets under shelter of the wheels. It was a lovely interlude.

An amazing place to visit in Thimphu. When I visited this place it was cold and windy, however, that didn’t stop the many people to go around the stupa 108 times. As always, I say, people should dress modestly and show respect to this place. Beautiful stupa.

Are there specific days and times Thimpu Chorten (Memorial Chorten) is open? Is it open on Saturdays and Sundays in November?
Written 13 August 2017
To the best of my knowledge the memorial is open 24x7. It is only recently they have added a steep tourist visiting fee. After having visited many memorials all over Bhutan, and due to the steep fee, we payed our respects from the gates, said a small prayer and departed to the next closeby Dordema. Have a great holiday when you visit !!!

Anyone in Thimpu/Paro now? How is the weather? We planned for this weekend with motor byke. Weather report is showing it's raining whole the day. Is it true? Can we get permission for Punakha / Phobjikha?
Written 14 September 2016
Weather is rainy intermittently but it doesn't rain that heavily. You can do your journey with motorbike ride with all the gears like rain-coat etc. You can get your Permit made in Thimphu from its Immigration Dept. (works Monday thru Friday) for visiting Punakha & Phobjikha.
