The Takin is Bhutan's national animal and [t is an odd-looking animal, a cross between a goat and a bison. The reserve has a huge fenced enclosure which has raised walkways around the fence which give you the opportunity to look down on the Takin. The reserve also hosts some deer and various protected birds. There is a visitor centre and a small café has recently opened.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 October 2023
- Charles_and_SusanNottingham, United Kingdom7,410 contributionsGood views of the TakinHere you get to see the National Animal of Bhutan, the Takin, up close. There are several enclosures where they can be seen wandering around. Also there are some injured buffalos being cared for and other animals and birds too. You walk around the enclosures on raised walkways,Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 December 2023
- Che-Jui HsuTaipei, Taiwan78 contributionsGreat for animal loversThe place was actually better than my expectation, you get to see cute takin and some other animals in the woods. I didn't want my guide to feel bored so we spent around 30-40 minutes, but if I'm there along I would have probably stayed for 1/2 hours lol. For all animal lovers or you're traveling along with children, you should consider visiting.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 14 February 2024
- TonciCroatia45 contributionsAn interesting zooThis is a beautiful zoo with some wild animals that have a habitat in the territory of Bhutan. We are talking about the wild animals like the takin - the national animal of Bhutan, then sambar and barking deer, wild boars, pheasants, etc. Here we took here a short break on the way to Wangdiste temple located above Dechenphodrang monastery. The zoo is quite well organized with enough space for the wild animals that are housed in it. This zoo is quite a popular place for locals and tourists to visit.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 March 2024

Very avoidable. Now Bhutan depends on tourism for revenue so things tend to be at least twice the expensive compared to neighbouring India even if they aren't worth the price, but Takin Preserve takes this to a new level. For the price of Nu 300 (children under 12 free), you get to see one bird, few deers and goats, and plenty of Takin. Even with leisurely walk in jungle scenery, it will barely take 45 min to cover what can perhaps be described as the world's tiniest zoo.

To understand the main celebrity animal in the reserve. The takin is species with a goat head and bull body. The male is bigger than the female with the cruve brown-black fur.

Travellers with experience of visiting big zoological gardens and wildlife sanctuaries may actually wonder that why they were ever asked to visit this place, which neither has the charms and amenities of a zoo, nor has the thrills and adventure of a wildlife safari... Simply a fenced hilly meadow... few tourists here and there... cheap ready-to-eat noodle shop... and a few takins here and there... now now now.... TAKINS !!!! Yes... that is precise why you should visit... to see the animal... to know the myth behind the origin of Takin --- the national animal of the then Royal Bhutan !!! I do not know if you get Takin anywhere else... I think this mammal is native to Bhutan itself... its an amazing creature.... dissimilar to any that I had seen before.... Do not count too much on the ambience of the Preserve... but yes... if you were here for TAKIN... you will get TAKIN !!! But, you should remember, except this reserve, the Takins are one of the hardest-to-find animals, as, despite their huge built, they are very agile and live on the slopes of dense Himalayan forests.
MYTH: In Bhutan, the animal is worshipped --- attributed to the folk lore hero Drukpa Kunley. Legend has it that in some obscure past fellow, well versed in Mahayana Magic, was asked by followers to perform a miracle at the end of a grand feast. He made a heap of cow and goat bones and cast a spell from which rose this new animal. It is believed to have the head of a goat on the body of a cow.
I strongly recommend this place as, you may have a chance to see tiger in the wildlife reserve, but can never spot a Takin in the Himalayan Hills, as they are naturally shy of human beings and also their natural habitats being dense Himalayan Forest, impenetrable to a general traveller. DO NOT MISS !!!

The Takin has been designated as the national animal of Bhutan and besides Bhutan, the Takin is also found in Tibet (China), north-west Myanmar and north-east India - primarily the areas around the Himalayan Mountains. Prior to this area being designated the "Takin Preserve", this area was once a Royal "mini" zoo for Bhutan's Royal family. However, some years ago the king of Bhutan had decided that the Takins should not be caged-in and needs to be set "free". After being set free, the Takins were so "domesticated" that they did not want to leave the general area of the "zoo" and Thimphu city. So the Bhutan government had decided to create the "Takin Preserve" to protect the animals.
The Takin Preserve is located about 15 minutes north-west from Thimphu city center. The Preserve grounds are clean and well preserved and there is a small visitor center at the entrance to the Preserve. Besides the Takin animals, the Preserve is also home for a small heard of Sambar deer and a few other animals.
I have read that the morning hours is the best time to see the Takins in the Preserve because that is the time they graze near the fence line. However, on the morning that we had toured the Preserve, all of the visible Takins had decided to stay away from the fence line and were only visible from a distance. So if you are intending to take photos of the Takins, a good camera with zoom lens is a must.
Overall, the Takin Preserve was quite an interesting stop - especially since this was the first time that I have ever seen a "Takin" - even after traveling through Tibet (China), Myanmar and India.

One can give it a miss as there are only a few Takins(National animal of Bhutan) in this place. For Indians the entry fee is 100 Nu. When we reached the place it was raining and could spot only one Takin. So it wasn't really worth it.

Nicely located, a little bit out of the city in sooo beautiful area.
Such a great idea to create this preserve for Takin's. An endangered species..A wonderful legend and a story of Divine Mad Monk and "How this amazing looking creature was created" Nice..!!
A MUST visit to Takin preserve as this animal is not found every where in the world.. Restricted to only this part of the Himalaya.

Hi! Could anyone tell me if there is anywhere in Bhutan where one can see the Takin "in the wild" instead of at the "preserve"? Any chance of seeing this Gnu-looking creature at any of the National Parks in Bhutan?
Written 6 February 2016
Agree with previous replies, rarely spotted in the wild and only in remote areas. Getting to Bumthang was a hairy enough journey, but travelling further north in the hope of an unlikely encounter will be even worse, and most likely a wasted trip. In the reserve you can get a better view and when we visited one came right up to the fence. Not pretty but seemed very sweet. Don't know if I'd like to meet a wild one up close though.
