Visited (and stayed one night) as part of a tour.
Short ferry ride (always fun on a ferry eh?) from Dakar port.
Small population reliant on tourism (mainly day trips) and fishing. One can see many reminders that this was one of the major embarkation points for the slave trade run by numerous European countries .
The day we went (Monday) the museum was closed .
The are some interesting memorials.
As well as the history of slavery, one can see ,on the hilltop ,the gun emplacement that was the rangefinder for the Dakar batteries in WW2, when the Vichy administration were in charge and the Allies and the Free French attacked to try and take control of the port (but lost the battle and ships)

The Island was very nice to walk around and the old buildings interesting especially the slave house. The art work with sand was amazing. There were a lot of items on sale too.

It's so sad to think of the inhuman things people did to others, and a visit to this island makes it so real.

You'll need a passport to get ferry tickets, and the ferries are packed before they ever depart. Definitely worthwhile to do a pre-arranged tour to help you navigate the ferry and to truly understand the history of the island.

Plenty of tourist shops and small cafes/restaurants. You can do this tour in as little or much time as you like. The ferries return frequently.

I don’t know right words to describe feelings about island. For sure is important place from historical point of view to visit… for sure visit is not nice more touching and sad .. on the other point of view island is beautiful peaceful and colourful place is under unesco list so it is also a little tip is is worth of visit.. restaurants are fine people really friendly sellers a little bit tiring but on the other hand they are fighting about their families…

I was here for a day and it was nice. Full of history. Small island with a vibrant culture. Kind of like Zanzibar. Very nice to stay overnight.

Despite the historical atrocities that took place in Goree, an island from which slaves would be shipped to the Americas, the place is incredibly beautiful and peaceful. It is a testament to the beauty and resilience of black people. Take a good guide to visit the slave house and the island and do not be bullied in tipping them more than you want (they will always ask for more). There are no cars on the island so be ready to walk. Also bring official ID (passport for foreigners, residence cards for resident) otherwise you won't be able to buy a ferry ticket.
The ticket prices will vary if you are a national, an African or a non-african but the most you will pay for a return trip is about 10usd/person.
Wear comfortable shoes, have change with you (no ATMs), wear sun protection. Oh and you need patience with the street vendors who will most probably sit next to you on the boat to try and sell you something or convince you to come to their shop on the island.

It is advisable to get a guide to take you around and give you a commentary of the history of the island. The salve building is a very humbling and emotional experience but well worth the visit. The rest of the island is beautiful and nice to walk around. Extend you time so you can have lunch in one of the excellent restaurants near the ferry stop. The people there are also very friendly and helpful. A lovely experience.

Goree island, what an experience we had here. The place is more than beautiful but sad story of it, it leaves a bitter taste. In same time I strongly believe that is important for people who visit this little Island about the history of slaves. Being there, staying there even for few hours you will help people who leaves there. I highly recommend this place if you have a chance.

Our 2 night trip to the island was extremely enjoyable. Rather than a day trip, you have time to really explore the island . The architecture is amazing . The evenings were pleasant after the day tourists left on the ferry. We had a peaceful stay at the quaint Chez Coubis.
