Lake Retba, better known as Pink Lake, owes its fame to its tint that turns from pink to mauve depending on the intensity of the sun's rays. The lake is a large shallow lagoon, located a few hundred meters from the ocean and surrounded by dunes and filaos. It owes its color to the presence of micro-organisms and to the... More

The day we visited it was not the perfect day for the lake to be at it brightest pink color, but it was nice trip, our guide explained to us about the lake, you can have a boat trip and have a dip if you feel like... nothing much around apart from salt and some hand craft sellers. Good to... More

Nice lake but is it worth a visit? First of all the road from Dakar is not easy, it goes through the smallest villages with massive traffic due to the very slow moving cars and tracks, wondering people and donkeys. The lake itself is quite beautiful and in some months it does look pinkish which is unusual and interesting. Unfortunately... More

This unique body of water is located about an hour north of Dakar. If you are arriving into DKR airport in the morning, go see this lake and then go to check into your Dakar hotel, otherwise you will have to double back. A taxi will take you there from the airport, or better yet, organize a guide. You can... More

Swimming in lac rose is soooo relaxing. Water is so dense due to salt presence. Because of algaes, the lake has pinkish colour. It might be not visible at the very first sight, but just move your head a bit or move a bit - so you will see it soon. You can buy salt from locals. I use it... More

This is definitely a great place to visit to get away from the hustle and bustle of Dakar. It should cost about 10,000 cfa in a taxi to get there. Some parts of the lake seem pinker than others, but it is still picturesque. You can buy some sea salt and like the Dead Sea, it's almost a miracle that... More

If you do decide to visit the Pink Lake, you must take a dip into the waters ! That's what makes it all worth it...at least for me !! Left Dakar at around 9 am and reached there around 10 am. Could have done a better job of negotiating the taxi ride there and back (USD 54/ Fcfa 30,000)... oh... More

Lake Retba is indeed quite pink. The color varies a lot so you won't always get the full pink surface visible from the edge. We actually had to get on the boat and move away from the shore to really see the "pinkness" but it was still impressive. The boatmen and the souvenir sellers are really clever, you should lead... if you are there in the season when the season is right and pink color is visible, go and visit the place. It's not a long drive from Dakar so you can do a half day trip. If the weather is right the pink color really stands out. Otherwise less but still, you can walk around, buy some salt, take... More

Visit the Pink Lake to see the salt harvesting. The lake varies in colour according to the light at different times of the day. We were there close to midday when the pinkness is not so apparent. The salt collection is fascinating - very labour intensive and in boats that appear to be barely serviceable. The 4x4 drive to and... More
