Located in independent square. Free to enter. Beautiful simple designed cathedral from early 1900. Free to enter, just be mindful of worshippers. Worth a stop.

Really well-maintained, still as white as if it was painted this month. Went inside for a peep, but not as impressive inside as from outside.

We liked this austere church, and especially the stairs. It's very central in The Baixa quarter and close to other things you might want to look at.

This Catholic cathedral stands out for its simple, linear shapes and white color in an area where there are colonial buildings. The interior is also simple but pleasant and interesting to visit even if only for a few minutes for those who enter it as a tourist. I definitely think it should be included in the itinerary of the visit to the city.

An incredible experience of beauty, majesty and tranquility in the middle of the city. I was quite emotional seeing the architecture, art and history of this wonderful cathedral.

Completed in 1944 this cathedral is a good example of the modernist style that became quite popular in the 1920s and 30s in Europe. The Portugese architect, de Freitas was a civil engineer and clearly inspired by a churchbuilding in a similar style in Le Raincy near Paris. The use of reinforced concrete was a major innovation and moreover less expensive than the traditional masonry. The simplicity of the structure stands in sharp contrast to the Baroque and Neoclassicist buildings such as the nearby Railway station and the Mercado Municipal.

The interior as well is sober with little distracting ornamentation. One of the few paintings drew my attention as it focusses on the activities of white Catholic missionaries in an all black African environment. One is being assassinated by locals, while the others are depicted as pious souls bringing the gospel to the indigenous. Rather colonial themes.

A beautiful white church in the center of town. It's located right next to one of the hotels. When I visited around 12:00 on a Sunday, the church was closed I will try again on a week day.

Its such a clean cut piece of architecture and id suggest all visitors pass by.
We could not get inside and were harassed by the numerous souvenir sellers who were trying so hard to sell their wares in front of the building.
