Don't let the pushy guides at the entrance convince you otherwise: you are allowed to walk freely in most parts of this station

The Maputo Central Train Station, or CFM (Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique) as written under the clock on the 51 m high central dome of the station, is quite possibly the most beautiful monument in Maputo and a fine example of colonial era architecture in Africa. The platforms are also decorated and well maintained. On the platform, which is on the left as you enter, there was a long line of large photos of stations with some resemblance built in the rest of the world. Definitely worth a visit and gives the opportunity to take interesting photos.

Beautiful architecture and immaculately maintained. Was a delight to see and visit the Museum too. There were restaurants but we didn't have time to stop. Also some wedding parties there for photos and it was a great vibe all around.

Designed in French Beaux-Arts style and completed in 1916, Maputo's central railway station is testament to a time when the railways were at their highpoint early 1900s. Train stations in those days almost had the same prestigious status as a cathedral. Those times are clearly over. The final blow for the Mozambican railways came after independence in 1975, when an exodus of qualified personnel took place and the railway system almost collapsed.

Though the station is still operational (three lines for transport of passengers remain) it is not longer a mass transportation hub. People in Mozambique prefer to take buses. The main bus station Junta is way out of town. A pity the responsible authorities were not even capable to make optimal use of the station's central location.

Quick visit to the train station was nice. We liked the architecture of it and it us worth for a quick stop (20 min, unless you visit the museum) while walking in the neighbourhood.

Alone I would have enjoyed this museum. It looks at the role of the railways in Mozambique's history, displays old equipment, allows you to walk around the outside of old trains, etc. For my small children, however, it was far too dry. Lots of written text. Very little you could touch.

It may have been better to just go to the train station, walk around the two old locomotives near the entrance, look at the giant photos of the train station over the years that hang over the platform, and take a short train ride somewhere.

Note in July 2021 the museum is closing at 15:00 due to COVID (though curfew is later).

Walked to station from our cruise ship, it was about 10-15 flat walk. If security gate was open it could have been less than 5 minutes. Relaxed with a cold beer ($2.00). Clean restrooms which they will unlock for you.

Visited today on a Sunday morning. Some guy with a yellow jacket tried to be my your guide. Probably best to just ignore him and go inside yourself.

There was a nicely air conditioned bar/cafe and a museum that is a must visit (50MT). Lots of pictures and history about the stations and how it was planned and executed. The museum is a must and should be no longer than 45 min.

Outside of the station was pretty busy with local folks, but no need to worry. The station was safe and nobody bothered me.

A must check out. Visited in Feb 2020
