Maputo's Natural History Museum is well worth a visit by anyone interested in Mozambique, its gemstones, and its natural resources. It is nicely laid out and very well maintained.

The exhibits were interesting but some rooms or walkways were not accessible due to maintenance needing to be done. We found the outdoor dinosaurs fun and some of the indoor exhibits very interesting though. Worth the visit, just wish it was in better shape.

Housed in a beautiful Portugese rococo style building, the museum's main exhibition is one of stuffed animals. Especially animals of prey like lions and leopards are often depicted in bloody scenes attacking antilopes and steenbucks. Anyway, the major species in Mozambique's animal kingdom are on show. It helped me to discern the different animals I had seen in the wild. However, in my case dead animals always trigger a sense of sadness.

There is a small ethnological section, but most of the descriptions are in Portugese only.

The museum is pretty easy to navigate, you can get through it in 30 mins. It costs about 100 Mets per person. I'd recommend it if you've got little ones. They'll enjoy the animals and carvings. The only downside is that the items are not labeled so it's hard to figure out the animals or artifacts.

This is an interesting natural history museum with impressive exhibitions of wildlife in Mozambique. A very interesting part is a small etnographic section on different peoples of Mozambique.

Definitely worth a look, the exhibitions are nothing amazing, quite basic. The building itself is beautiful.

The museum, for the time and the mentality of the period, can be considered complete, not less than other of the same period in Europe.
There is a huge collection of stuffed animals.
The imagination of the embalmers has reproduced bloody scenes that, in their drama, today are a bit funny.
We had three very interesting days in Maputo, city that worth to visit. For getting anywhere I really recommend the driver of tuk tuk we had the occasion to know: Anronio (mobile +258 842119500). He really know and love his city. He is a good man, enough english speaking to communicate well (it is rare among the taxi/tuk tuk drivers of the city) correct, serious and fast in understanding the needs of its customers. We visited the most various places in the city, which are more and more than the spots indicated for example in the Lonely Planet.

Old-fashioned museum - very old-fashioned - in stunning colonial-era building. Sadly, the main exhibit, filling the ground floor, is stuffed animals. We were fresh from Kruger, and my senses revolted at being confronted with these dead examples. Left withourt seeing the rest of the museum.

I know this place since my childhood. There's s unique collection of elephants preserved in featus stage. Highlight of the visit. I have visited this museum many times in the past. It reminds me of childhood. Wildlife is depicted in a way that's not to be found anywhere else in the world. All mounted up in the early 20th century. The entry fee is symbolic.
